Are most results from neuroscience research probably wrong?

Paul King makes a lot of great points and I would just like to supplement his answer by talking about why neuroscientist use small sample sizes. To run a single subject or animal through an experiment often takes a substantial amount of time and money. Let me give you a few examples:Doing fMRI studies on humans normally requires giving the subject a physical, doing blood sample work ups, and then several sessions of 1-2 hours of laying in a MRI machine. You also have to compensate the subject for participating on the experiment, find times during the week where they can spend 2+ hours at your lab, not to mention having to analyze the massive amount of information you get from the fMRI.This all takes up a lot of resources and is still probably on the easier end of getting a good sample size in terms of neuroscience experiments.Doing in-vivo (putting electrodes inside the brain to record neurons) experiments on humans gets much more tricky. You cannot ethically cut open a health persons skull and put electrodes in it to test your hypothesis. All in-vivo human work is done on patient who are undergoing brain surgery. The most common of which are STN-deep brain stimulation treatment(STN-DBS) and epilepsy treatment. In both cases surgeons have to put electrodes in the brain to locate the correct location to either implant the DBS or perform the surgery. While they have the electrodes in the brain they are able to record from them.As you can imagine these are not very common surgery and are very expensive and time consuming. There is also a limited patient pool to draw from. As a result the only option is small sample sizes.Doing in-vivo animal experiments. It is possible to get larger sample sizes in in-vivo experiments when working with animals but there are still limitations. This is something my lab does. It is still expensive to buy and implant the electrodes required to do the research and it takes time. In my lab each rat takes from 2-3 months to run depending on the experiment and you can only run a couple at a time. This includes hours of training, recording, and drug treatment a day per rat.So imagine if it takes 3 months to run 4 rats at a time. It would take you a year to get a sample size of 16. It is very possible you would have to discard at least some of the data from 2-3 of those rats because of electrodes ending up in the wrong position (this is very possible depending on what area you are trying to record from), lesions not taking, sickness, ect. Now out of those 16 at least 6 would have to be control rats so in the end of a year you have at most 10 experimental rats (more likely 8 or 9) and you have not even had time to do the analysis on the data you have collected from all of these rats which will take several more months.I agree that the low sample sizes are something that have to be kept in mind but they are also often difficult to avoid. That is why neuroscience results are not often viewed as completely valid (at least by neuroscientists) until other many other experiments have been done that compliment the initial findings.Neuroscientists write papers with low sample sizes because it takes a long time to get even those trials done and if they write their paper showing their findings it allows other labs to test those findings. This increases the speed in which a larger sample size (over several labs and papers) can be created and considered.

When does the "first free then paid version" strategy work?

A free trial is a common front end offer across many industries: think about software, fitness, test driving cars, even the taste tests and sampling at Costco. This strategy can work when the value proposition is unclear, when you're testing new markets, or when you're a service provider looking to overcome objections to establishing a long-term relationship and need to build trust. (Think gym memberships and personal training here)Buying decisions are emotional, and generally require the customer to know, like or trust a brand.Free trials also capitalize on human nature that likes convenience and dislikes change. Using the software example, once you have a piece of software up and running, it's easier to continue using it rather than have to go through the hassle of starting over with something else and losing the work, time and energy spent to setup your system in the first place. Free trials into a subscription model work beautifully for this reason.Think about what you're trying to sell. Is it unknown? Do consumers need to experience it to see the value or identify as an end user? Is there a ton of competition in your market? How much of an experience will they need to understand, like and trust your brand or product?Free trials aren't for every product or service, but have a proven track record of success in consumables, software and relationship-based services.

Feedbacks from Our Clients

I just purchased PDF Element perpetual license as an alternative to using Adobe Acrobat Pro DC (since Acrobat Pro costs more than Netflix). PDF Element is working great and does everything I need it to do. However, the 5-stars is primarily based on how excellent and quick the support group is. Very well documented and fast responses to my questions. Everything is on the same email thread and the replies have been within minutes, not hours. I hope this review does not jinx anything.
