Priced between that of 1A and 3A.3A - AC 3 tier​​​​Very similar to sleeper class. Your ticket is confirmed!RAC: If your PNR Status is RAC even after chart preparation, that means you have been allotted a SIDE LOWER seat (Berth number is mentioned, after chart preparation). But, the difference is: The Side Lower seat is to be shared by two people which have the status as RAC (That seat is actually for one person)​​​​These are the side seats. Note that, the upper one will be allotted to a confirm ticket holder, and lower one will be alloted to 2 people in RAC (Not always, sometimes confirm ticket holders too get side lower)During the journey, TC can allot you some seat, if it is vacant/the person who has booked it doesn't travel.WL (GNWL)(General Waiting List):That means your ticket is in waiting. There is a number assigned to you. For example: WL50. When people cancel their ticket, number reduces. That means, when 50 people will cancel their ticket, your ticket will be either RAC/ directly Confirm.Normally the process goes like this:WL-------> RAC------->CONFIRMTHE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WAITING LIST:The total seats available for reservation on a train are divided among different quotas. Namely, General , Tatkal, Ladies, etc. Similarly, there's a pooled quota too. The pooled quota is used for a bunch of stations who share a pool of tickets. These are relatively minor stations, at least as far as that particular train is concerned. For eg. if you were to book a ticket from Bangalore(SBC) to Rajamundry(RJY) on the Guwahati Express (2509), then you would get tickets assigned from the Pooled Quota.PQWL (Pooled Quota Waiting List)If your ticket is booked in Pooled Quota(Which we don't know at the time of booking) and all the seats have been booked(in pooled quota), you will have ticket status as PQWL 20 (for example).Normally, the chances of PQWL getting confirmed are low.CKWL (Tatkal Quota waiting list)If you book the ticket in Tatkal Quota, and unlucky to get confirm ticket (Many of us, as the tickets go REALLY fast!) then your waiting list is CKWL. Chances of getting this confirmed are also low. (The final status is known only after chart preparation)Note: If your ticket status, even after chart preparation, is any WL, then you are considered as 'ticketless'. But, this is India! So, people travel with waitlisted tickets and bribe the TTE/TC. They are rarely given seats (there's not one, so how will he give?) and people actually sleep on the floor spreading a newspaper.EDIT 2:Waitlisted people ! So, as of now, confirmed tatkal tickets are non-refundable.EDIT 4: From 12 November 2015, cancellation charges of booked tickets have been doubled.Also, from 12 November 2015, there will be changes in chart preparation. There would be two charts prepared, one before four hours of departure of train and another, 30 minutes before the departure of train. So, people can also book tickets 30 minutes prior to departure of train.Now, The Waitlisted tickets won't automatically cancel after chart preparation and you should cancel it prior to the second chart preparation (ie. before 30 mins of departure of train). If you dont cancel it yourself before 30 mins of departure of train, you wont get any refund.

2A stands for AC 2-tier, which means there are two berth levels in each compartment rather than 3 in 3A, namely, lower and upper berth (or Side lower and side upper)The facilities you can find onboard are -Bedrolls and blankets (Bedrolls consist of two sets of sheets and a pillow)Hand towel (although this differs from train to train, certain less priority trains in some zonal railways do seem to bail out on this)Curtains - These were earlier also present in 3A, but due to railways cutting costs (Official explanation was to enhance safety), they were removed from 3A but are still there in 2A (Try arguing with that!). You can use them for more privacy.Reading lights, useful if like me, you have a habit of a late night read upMore luggage space as a result of each main bay having 4 passengers instead of 6.The upper berth is lower as a result of no middle berth, which leads to more headroomMore comfortable and plush seating used than in 3AAlso, I've found the washrooms in 2A to be cleaner and better equipped with toiletries than 3A. This might be due to less passengers (46 in a standard 2A coach compared to 64 for 3A)In addition, premium trains like Rajdhani/Shatabdi offer all inclusive fare structure, with onboard catering included in the fare. Although, the food options are same for both 2A and 3A.I would also advise that if you decide to book in 2A, never opt for side berths, if possible. They are essentially the same as in 3A, with curtains and reading lights. Not worth paying the extra fare, in my opinion.
