How can I check my new Chennai Metro card status?

As soon as you open the account, at your specific request, the branch will upload request for issue of a Debit Card. As soon as the ATM Debit Card is printed and dispatched to your addressed, the Bank will send an SMS to the registered mobile number of the customer, informing the Speed Post / Courier Reference Number. Customer can track the status through India Post or the related Courier website. However, if the customer wants to know the status of the card prior to the dispatch, customer has to approach the branch to know the status whether the request has been received by the Card Vendor , whether accepted or rejected, whether printed or not, what is the Card Number etc. There is no separate process to know these type of statuses. The views expressed herein are my personal opinions. What are the benefits of net banking over transaction through debit card?

The benefits are multi fold depending on what is attractive for a consumer, user convenience, security, or ease of use for repeated paymentsLogin Experience - Netbanking credentials (user name, password) are typically remembered as you might be using it regularlyUser Experience - Netbanking allows the user to provide one more step up input - like characters from the debit card grid available on the back of the associated debit card, OTP or anything else left to the discretion of your bank. There is no m3d to enter hence there is no need to enter long card numbers and an additional 3DS password for the cardRepeat user experience - Depends on the risk appetite of the bank but some wil allow you to login and complete the transaction without requiring another additional factor of authentication thereby making the user experience very seamless. For an equivalent experience in debit cards you need to save your card with the merchant which is frought with risk unless it's a reputed merchant however not recommended as a general practice , hence as opposed go debit cards Netbanking credentials are never stored and require you to provide these details each timeSecurity - Using your debit card on non reputed sights can leave you vulnerable to fraud with cards skinning being the most common hence worldwide debit card usage is not as high as credit cards though the same security is provided at the card level of both, hence, fear does play top of mind which works against debit card usage and paymentsLoyalty - More banks are trying to make Netbanking be at par with debit cards usage so that users are incentivized to use by earning loyalty points for spends but that's more futuristic currently~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~About me: This article expresses my personal views, and not those of any of my employers — past, present or future.Twitter: https://twitter.com/jasujaLinkedIn: www.LinkedIn.com/in/Jasuja

Why do people use debit cards instead of credit cards?

First let's confirm the difference between a Debit Card, Charge Card as opposed to a Credit Card.A Debit Card is a real-time payment method and involves electronic movement of funds from your current account to that of the person you are paying, near immediately. For all intents and purposes it is “paperless cash”; the only difference being that in the case of dispute you can recall it if the wrong amount for example has being debited. From the person who uses the card it is easier than carrying a cheque book as well as lots of notes [currency] if the person does a lot of transactions. Also the funds are debited immediately. For the retailer’s point of view, the debit and credit card these days are cleared automatically through either card readers and PIN (Chip & PIN) and if no funds available automatically rejected by the bank. The card holder knows that the funds aren’t there; the retailer does not allow the purchase to go ahead, therefore does not lose money/stock. The money is immediately taken from the debtor's account and cleared.A Credit Card carries a line of credit. That is to say you are allowed to borrow up to your credit limit, but that comes at a cost. A Credit Card is recognised as a higher risk to the bank than an overdraft; the latter is technically payable in full, on demand. A Credit Card is not, unless certain procedures take place first.Further a Credit Card does not have to be paid in one go, but has a “minimum payment” each month, which forms the basis of the “revolving loan” (as it is referred to); and providing that is paid, the responsibility has been completed by you as the debtor. However the rest of the balance is a loan which attracts interest on a daily basis, and again depending on your Credit Score and history of payment can be very high. Even someone with a reasonable Credit Score, can pay at least 15.9% APR on a Credit card; more often that can be at least 19.9% and those who are a vey high risk 35%+ APRIn the UK, there is an advantage of borrowing on a Credit Card, in so far that under our laws (The Consumer Credit Act [consolidated by the Consumer Rights Act 2015]) means that if there is a purchase on the Credit Card or indeed under a general, fixed-term loan, providing the amount has not been paid off, you have the protection of the bank, should the retailer go bust or does not supply the goods.Under the terms of that legislation, if anything does go wrong, not only can you issue legal proceeding against person /company that provided the service/ product both the Supplier and the Credit Card issuer, for “non-performance of contract”.This was formerly known as S.75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, and meant that the as a consumer you had the extra power of the bank / card issuer behind you, along with other statute to protect your rights. This applied particularly with supply of goods and services, as well a defective goods. In short you could sue both at the same time (joint and several liability). To that end Credit Cards are more advantageous to the consumer since you have that extra power behind you if anything goes wrong with the goods or services and you have to go to litigation. Normally the bank will take over the case for you; refund the money and sue the other party on your behalf. There was another advantage with Credit Cards, that providing you paid the balance in full (rather like the Charge Card), you did not get charged interest from the date of purchase to the clearance of the debt by settlement date. That could be up to what was in effect six weeks free credit; something you do not get with an overdraft. However Charge Cards like AMEX & Diners Club did not carry that advantage since the balance had to be paid in full on due date each time, you could not make a “minimum payment”. Therefore they fell outside of the former Consumer Credit Act 1974. Again Charge and Debit Cards were really aimed at international professionals and travellers needing to work in more than one currency. There is a further advantage, and particularly those who go overseas and do a lot of transactions in different currencies, it saves them carrying lots of money in those currencies and therefore safer. In fact that is how American Express and Diners Club International, along with the French “Carte Blanche” came about. However these were Charge Cards, there was no interest charged, but you paid an annual fee for its use, as well as foreign exchange costs. However in the latter case still cheaper than continuously changing from one currency to another and the banking costs for that. Again, safer than carrying a lot of hard currency on you. From the employer’s point of view, it gave them the added advantage of keeping an eye on the spending of the business representatives, as well as saving a lot of paper work in receipts etc. It also meant that payment made by the cardholder (employee), could be charged back to them through their salary payment as a deduction if they tried to be “clever” and claim more than they were due. In short a good audit trail for the employer and safer than carrying a lot of hard currency on you as the rep.To that end Credit Cards have been around a long time. Really the debit card has only been introduced to, in effect, replace the cheque, which as mentioned above was unsafe and time consuming to process on all three sides, if you include the bank. Also nearly all debit cards double as an access ATMs, to draw “hard cash” money and outside of banking hours. That money is also secure from the banks’ point of view as it is held in a machine, which is not so easy to rob as a group of cashiers in a banking hall. So safer all around.Of course, this has had an unfortunate side effect on the employees of the bank who have seen the number of manual tills fall, and therefore their jobs slide away and become redundant. As an example, a bank in my town (one of the largest clearing banks in the UK), as a result of ATMs being introduced both in and outside the branch have resulted in the number of tills being required reduced, and therefore cashiers. What was once seen as a prestigious and pretty much “for life” job has actually become quite the opposite. So Credit Cards are no longer “paid in” by the retailer as they used to be in the 1970s and 80s, and as for cash withdrawls by the card holder can be done outside banking hours and no floor limits to deal with and await authorisation by telephone. Everything is done electronically, which has had the effect of reducing fraud and time processing. That means more time in your office/shop as opposed to waiting to go through the queue at the tills. The card processing machine, not only for Credit Cards, but Debit Cards too, have taken away these requirements, so everyone happy, with the exception of the cashiers and clearing centre clerks who have found their jobs reduced/redundant.
