What’s with Indians and spelling bees?
It’s certainly interesting, as you walk around and travel the United States, you see people of all walks of life. You see Indians periodically. But not frequently in most parts. But if you turn on virtually any national level finals for a spelling bee:You’d think our country was 70% Indian American! My high school was mostly white. I’d say there were 1–2% Indian American students (or the child of Indian parents).Every month we had an assembly as a high school, where we all sat in an auditorium and the teachers took turns going up to the podium doing their announcements. One of the things they did, were subject-based awards. For the Math award every month, it was the same guy:SeptemberNishantOctoberNishantNovemberNishantDecemberNishantI knew Nishant. He was a cool guy. I actually felt embarrassed for him as I know he hated this attention. He used to grimace every time they called him up in front of the entire school for his monthly Math award.Nishant is a good character study though. His father was an MD (ophthalmologist). Mother had an MBA but now was a stay-at-home mother for him and his brother. Both parents were born and raised in India. Both from top Indian Universities.Every day, his mother pulled up to pick her sons up. Nishant and his brother were always well dressed for school. She seemed loving but also quite business-like.His mother kept a calendar of their assignments. Supervised their studies. While Dad was working, she was managing the home and staying on top of those two boys’ academics. Now I’m not knocking this parenting. Both of those boys were stellar students, good people, and both have now become doctors and seem quite happy. But do you think this is the kind of household you could come drifting in with a report card covered in B’s and C’s?Not so.Why are Indians so dominant in spelling bees? One: Immigration gives preferential treatment to higher education individuals. Hence the “brain drain” as it’s called in India. Many of these kids are the children of the best and brightest. Two: Academics is a religion/(dare I say…blood-sport?) in India (and most of Asia). Those parents who come to the U.S. have likely overcome great obstacles to get here and see it as a great opportunity that shouldn’t go to waste.Three: A child’s academic performance has elevated status in Asian/Indian culture as an indicator of a person’s quality of parenting. Helping a child succeed in school is as much an act of love as it is an act of duty.Spelling bee competitions bring visibility, potential scholarships, and massive value to college applications. And let’s be honest — those competitions bring some major bragging rights.Spelling bees require talent, significant organization, supervision and discipline with studies — something the top Indian immigrants have in spades.
