What is a secondary school transcript?

This term can go two ways. “Secondary school transcript” may refer to a school transcript which is secondary, meaning supplemental, containing data such as honors, extracurricular activities, infractions and so on. In this way it may be a sort of replacement for a letter of recommendation. It fleshes out the academic record. However, more commonly the term puts its emphasis on the “secondary school,” to indicate the period of time/educational level described by the transcript. I will talk here mostly abotut this latter meaning. As with a college transcript, the secondary school transcript documents a student's high school (or equivalen) performance including courses taken and their dates from beginning to end, grades earned in those classes, number of credits applied per class toward total credits needed to graduate, and cumulative grade point average including advanced placement credits, honors level courses, repeated or remedial classes, standardized test scores, required versus elective classes. It MIGHT include offices held, membership in honors or service groups, gaps in attendance and whether they were excused or not, academic or disciplinary infractions, and anything else considered as giving an accurate overall picture of the student's performance (and some would say potential). The transcript is used chiefly as proof of completion of high school and is typically provided as part of an application for admission to a college or vocational-technical school, enlistment in the military or civil service, or as part of any other job application requiring high school graduation or its equivalency. Some places will accept a photocopy of the diploma, while others want a more detailed impression of the student's educational background, interests, strengths and weaknesses and will require the transcript. So if you must show proof that you are a high school graduate, and you have an impressive record with a high grade point average, it is in your best interest to take that opportunity to “show off” a little and provide the full transcript as your proof. If your performance was average, or even if you just barely graduated by the skin of your teeth, I would recommend you provide a copy of your diploma and not give them the detailed transcript unless they ask for it. However, it's hard to say. They may be looking for a well rounded person. They may want to know about foreign languages. They may not care so much about your cumulative GPA as whether you took any classes that will be useful toward the proposed new major or career. Either document proves that you graduated from high school.Any copy of whichever record you submit should be officially signed and certified and should bear the seal of the institution, to show that the data has not been tampered with. You will want to keep your original document (probably); you can bring it to the interview and let them see and photocopy it, but don't leave the original with them. You should also request several copies of the official transcript at the same time since it must be signed, stamped, seal affixed, etc. It's just easier.Aside: I knew a young woman who xeroxed several yearbook pages where she was shown in photos of club and service organization members. If you decide to do this, your school library copy of the yearbook will give you betterer copies (without those special or private autographs and messages from classmates). This was her way of trying to make her interview more memorable among dozens of applicants’; the photos were not part of her official transcript. Note that it is important to make sure the application does not say anything about to NOT include photos or identifying demographic info like age, sex, race, etc. If these are prohibited and you enclose a photo anyway, it will count against you. They will think you either don't read instructions or don't follow instructions, and they also may be legally required to exclude you from consideration. So choose wisely. Also, just a note that the secondary school or college record is called a “transcript,” but it is more accurately a compilation, or summary collection, of your scholastic performance record, where all of the parts have been gathered into one place. An academic transcript, therefore, is not the same kind of “transcript” as a document which has been copied over from something else (like the medieval manuscripts of Bible stories painstakingly reproduced and illuminated by monks) or that has been moved from one format to another (for example, speech or dictation that has been put into typed or digitized text format by a court reporter, Electronic Health Record scribe, or medical transcriptionist). The word “transcript” literally means something like “cross-written” in Latin.

How do you know someone's true personality?

A2A request: “What is the process of identifying a person’s character?”Character can be defined in so many different ways. Let’s for the sake of this answer say that character is a reflection of someone’s personality. That is, the typical way the person thinks, behaves, feels and relates to the self and others. So, how do personality psychologists measure personality characteristics? Four different approaches…all four are needed (really).Observation of their behavior in a number of different contexts. Context can have a tremendous impact on behaviors that are displayed. We have years of research to support this statement.Self-report instruments. Not just one. Some people have better insight into themselves than others. Some people lie on self-report instruments. Different instruments are better than others than getting a handle on the person with little self-insight vs. the person who habitually lies…Reports from knowledgeable others. By knowledgeable others, we mean best friends, parents, teachers, clergy (maybe), siblings, significant other, spouse, ex-spouse. A person is a “knowledgeable other” if they have observed the “target” in a number of different settings over a period of time.Life records and Documents. Examples of documents that might be revealing: credit reports, transcripts from school, disciplinary records, health records, arrest records.

How long do public schools in the U.S. keep student records?

As one who relies on school records for building disabilities cases, I can only concur with there being no set guidelines. I was a contractor at a district that put all on microfilm and said they would be held for a century. Another district read the law as keeping them “as long as educationally relevant” (?) and would shred them after the student’s 23rd birthday. The district in which I live is even more into housecleaning and only holds student records for two years post-graduation before being destroyed. Advice to all: upon graduation, ask Pupil Services for copies of all records and transcripts. This is particularly important for students who have been in special education or have had a health impairment service plan. You never know when they might be vital for requesting accommodations, applying for supplemental income or securing support services later in life.
