Have a feeling you've heard the name somewhere?We'll get there...Synopsis:Frank Abagnale became notorious for impersonating a pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer while in his early 20's. He was arrested at 21 by the French police, and later hired by the FBI to teach them his fraudulent tricks. He started his own consulting agency, educating corporations, financial institutions and government agencies.Early Crimes:As a teenager, Frank Abagnale got caught up in petty crimes, including shoplifting. He soon grew tired of this practice, though, and decided to move into more sophisticated forms of burglary. Specifically, Abagnale began using his father's gas credit card to make a tidy profit. Frank Jr. then convinced gas station attendants to give him a portion of his sale back in cash, and allowed them to pocket a portion of the proceeds. The scam fell apart, though, when Frank's father got the credit card bill, which topped several thousand dollars.Abagnale, then left home with $200 in his bank account and no formal education. Frank altered his driver’s license to make himself 10 years older than he was, and exaggerated his education. This helped him get better-paying jobs, but he still barely made ends meet.Using his checkbook, Frank decided to quit his job and write bad checks to support himself. Before long, Abagnale had written hundreds of bad checks and had overdrawn his account by thousands of dollars. Knowing that he would eventually be caught, he decided it was time to go into hiding.Impersonations:Frank realized that he could cash more bad checks if he dazzled bank tellers with a new, more impressive personality. He decided pilots were highly respected professionals, so he schemed his way into getting a pilot's uniform. Abagnale called Pan American Airlines' headquarters and told them that he had lost his uniform while traveling. HQ told him where to go to pick up a new one, which he did—and charged it to the company using a fake employee ID.Abagnale then cleverly forged his own pilot's ID and FAA license, and then learned all he could about flying—once, by pretending he was a student doing a research paper on Pan Am, and later through stewardesses he dated while in uniform.Once Pan Am and police began catching on to Abagnale's lies, he decided to change identities again, this time becoming an out-of-town doctor taking a sabbatical in Atlanta, Georgia. When a local doctor came visiting, Abagnale thought his identity was blown—but instead he was invited to visit the local hospital, where he became a regular visitor. He used their medical library to bone up on his new role as a pediatrician, and his inquisitiveness and bedside manner landed him a temporary job supervising medical interns during the night shift. He was then promoted to resident supervisor, and given authorization to temporarily practice medicine in the state of Georgia. When his fraud nearly cost the life of a child, Frank gave up the gig and left town.Over the next two years, Abagnale bounced from job to job—passing the bar as a legal assistant in Louisiana; teaching sociology at Brigham Young; and pretending he was a film director. But eventually, Abagnale's past caught up with him when he settled down in Montpelier, France. He had just defrauded banks across the country for more than $300,000, and decided to live a straight life for awhile. When a former girlfriend recognized his face on a Wanted poster, she turned him in to authorities.Imprisonment and Later Life:Abagnale served time in France, Sweden and the United States for his crimes. Frank was eventually granted parole by the United States when he was 26. In exchange, the government told Abagnale that he had to educate them about his methods, in order to prevent others from defrauding the government. Frank worked for the FBI for more than 30 years as one of the world’s foremost authorities on document fraud, check swindling, forgery and embezzlement. He also started his own company, Abagnale & Associates, which educates others on how to avoid becoming fraud victims. Abagnale also wrote the books The Art of the Steal and Stealing Your Life, both about fraud prevention.In 2002, Steven Spielberg made a film about Abagnale's life, Catch Me If You Can, based on Abagnale's 1980 book by the same name. Atlanta, along with Dallas, are long-time epicenters of the Gay South. What makes them LGBT-friendly? There are several reasons that combine to make them attractive.Important to keep in mind is that gay people are more mobile on average than most. Many because they grew up in an oppressive atmosphere they want to escape, and Atlanta is surrounded by Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, South Georgia—and by extension North Florida, which have been historically oppressive to LGBT folks. Sure this is changing, but the history is there. So Atlanta (and Dallas) are geographically convenient to those who want to move but still stay in the South.Second, big cities tend to attract LGBT migration for economic reasons. That’s where the jobs are, especially in service industries where the LGBT community has been very successful. So successful in fact, that major corporations—which tend to be in large cities—have adopted LGBT-friendly hiring and employee retention policies. Do you want your life partner included in your health insurance policy? An Atlanta-based company is more likely to offer that.Third, Atlanta likes to promote itself as a civil rights epicenter, being the home of Martin Luther King, Jr. For years the city’s motto has been, “the city too busy to hate.”Fourth, big cities offer a lot of anonymity, which can be very attractive to someone who grew up being bullied and socially harassed in the rural South.Fifth, there is the role of momentum. Atlanta has a reputation for being the gay epicenter of the South, so there is more gay culture. The city has become a rich incubator for catering to the gay market. Lesbian and gay real estate investors have gentrified entire neighborhoods that were previously squalid, and local entrepreneurs, cultural institutions and charities benefit from all this “gay money.” In fact, a local newspaper proclaimed that the “best of Atlanta” was the LGBT community.Economic power leads to political power, and Atlanta has elected openly lesbian and gay public servants. A recent attempt at passing an anti-gay discrimination bill, dubbed by its sponsors as a “religious freedom” bill, was vetoed by the Governor of Georgia under strong pressure from Atlanta-based corporations who feared it would lead to boycotts of their products and harassment against their employees. But there is further to go on the legal front compared to cities in the Northeast and West Coast. This is because progressive Atlanta is an island in a very conservative sea. Georgia remains one of 29 states without laws that specifically protect LGBT citizens against discrimination.So the reasons are at once, sociological, geographical, economic, legal, historical and cultural that together form a perfect congruence.

After a week, let’s take a look at the news:During the first weekend of the Trump presidency, the south was ravaged by 50 tornadoes. Nearly 2 dozen dead, and while there was much fanfare over Trump signing a hiring freeze on federal government employees (way to go in job creation by the way…) the Governors of Mississippi and Georgia were begging for FEMA boots on the ground. These tornadoes took place from Thursday -Sunday. Trump signed to send FEMA to Georgia on Wednesday. I believe it would have been much more appropriate to be focused on this instead of:No one other than Trump cares about the size of the crowd at the inauguration. Those that voted for him in Mississippi and Georgia, needed an immediate response. They did not care about how many were at his inauguration. Bush was attacked for not responding to Katrina… and it was in the same time frame that it took Trump to respond. There was no reason to delay like this to send necessary aid.But… this matters.There was a bit of fall-out over that press conference. It did not have the intended results that Spicer wanted. It made the media furious that a Press Secretary would blatantly lie. Regardless of anything else, the Press Secretary is expected to be honest.We did learn though exactly what to expect. Alternative Facts. What you and I would call lies, this administration considers “alternative facts”.Steve Bannon CALLED the NY Times. Steve Bannon wanted to tell the News media to shut up. He wanted to insult them, to try to assert his “power”. While the news media is not going to shut up, there is one thing that happened, that I’m sure Bannon didn’t see coming. What’s that?Dan Rather has come out of retirement, with the express purpose of setting the record straight in regards to claims made by Trump and team. I don’t think it’s what Bannon had in mind.Perhaps Bannon too was thinking about this…What we did learn is that between Bannon and Conway, we will not get accurate information, and if they are pushed to answer… they will pull out “Alternative Facts”. The truth it appears, needs to be searched for.The Doomsday Clock was advanced by 30 seconds. This is due to concerns over rhetoric and lack of respect for expertise.Executive Director, Rachel Bronson said:“We’re so concerned about the rhetoric, and the lack of respect for expertise, that we moved it 30 seconds,” she said. “Rather than create panic, we’re hoping that this drives action.”In an op-ed for The New York Times, Dr. Titley and Dr. Krauss elaborated on their concerns, citing the increasing threats of nuclear weapons and climate change, as well as President Trump’s pledges to impede what they see as progress on both fronts, as reasons for moving the clock closer to midnight.“Never before has the Bulletin decided to advance the clock largely because of the statements of a single person,” they wrote. “But when that person is the new president of the United States, his words matter.It was reported Wednesday that the entire Senior management team of the State Department quit as it became apparent that Tillerson would be confirmed as Secretary of State. Once word reached the administration, they announced that the people had been forced out. Regardless, these were career people, that had an experience and knowledge that you cannot find on a website for jobs.Trump is not concerned…He has clearly had other things to deal with…Trump’s cabinet choices have not all been confirmed. They are still in hearings, with Democrats raking them over the coals. However, Trump is not taking well any votes that are against confirmation of his choices. People that are being sworn in… it seems don’t actually want the POTUS in the picture with them.This is from someone that says they are an aide in the White House. Given the fighting between Conway and Spicer… I wonder what Conway would do with Omarosa.It appears that the rank and file Republicans may soon find that they are on their own with Trump. If Priebus departs, then likely Bannon will try to step in. Given how much Bannon hates Ryan… that could be interesting.I wonder if a new Chief of Staff can explain to Trump the importance of the crowds.This is how to get things done during this administration?Now, you may take the Whistleblower tweets with a grain of salt, but if the Trump Administration were a ship… it would be sinking from all of the leaks.Trump issued a hiring freeze for federal agencies and then ordered a communications blackout. In response to this, some official social media accounts have tweeted out messages decidedly at odds with his agenda and leaks are flowing into newsrooms from across the federal government.What began as nothing more than a protest by a former Badlands National Park Service employee exploded overnight Tuesday and early Wednesday into a Twitter movement in support of climate change science.An anonymous group of people who claim to be National Park Service employees created an account using the agency’s official arrowhead logo as an avatar and unleashed on the Trump administration for muzzling federal workers, particularly those at the Environmental Protection Agency who have been barred from speaking to the press and public through social media.The Washington Post reached out to the group via Twitter, without much success. “We will not be identifying ourselves due to the anger and threats coming from President Trump’s loyalists,” came an anonymous reply. “We are just here to push the science that is being dismantled by the current administration.”There was the Women’s March on Washington*Image from VOA newsPerhaps THIS was what Trump thought he saw?The Women’s March (which had far more people than the inauguration nationwide) took place the day after the inauguration. It is only the beginning. #ScienceMarch is being planned. Scientists are also planning to run for office.After a Tuesday filled with news of gag orders on government scientists at several federal agencies, others in the science community are rapidly coming up with ways of pushing back against the new administration’s attempts to keep tax-funded research from the public. One group is in the early stages of forming a second march on Washington, DC — this time with a focus on science. Meanwhile, other scientists are thinking of ways to change policy, by running for office themselves.Trump signed an executive order to begin looking at repealing “Obamacare”. Upon that signing… whether they like it or not… it’s now going to be TRUMPCARE. Although… it seems that now that Republicans have the chance to put their own plan in place, no one is sure just EXACTLY what that will be. If you read the executive order, you will still be trying to figure out just what he really signed.It does seem that Trump supporters are going to pay dearly for this. Some supporters felt he would do nothing, others had not idea that Obamacare and ACA are the same thing. He simply canceled the meeting.In a desperate attempt to fix this latest fiasco, Trump reached out to Mexico’s president. They spoke on the phone, and have agreed to another meeting.Nearly identical comments were released by both administrations with the exception of Mexico stating that both agreed that there would be no more public comments about the wall."With respect to the payment of the border wall, both Presidents recognized their differences clear and very public position on this sensitive issue, and agreed to resolve these differences as part of a comprehensive discussion of all aspects of the bilateral relationship. The Presidents also agreed for now not to speak publicly about this controversial issue."Trump then found himself being questioned about dropping sanctions against Putin. He waffled on that, and then was informed how the UK feels about it.Perhaps he was still embarrassed about his team spelling Theresa May’s name wrong… multiple times. Maybe the watched the porn star and decided they were one and the same.The President signed an executive order to cut off funding to Sanctuary cities. It will likely be struck down as unconstitutional.While Republicans are afraid to stand up to President Trump, it appears that the Mayors of many cities are not. I want to be wrong… no one wants to see our country struggle.This week has done nothing but re-affirm my belief that this administration is a disaster. With claims that Trump makes his decisions based on what he sees on TV, his refusal to give up his Samsung S3 phone (which can easily be hacked and turned into a mic so anyone can listen to his conversations)… the fighting among the staff and their leaking the problems to the press…the lack of basic organization that not only makes the President look bad but reflects on the nation… the silly tantrums over pictures of crowds… badly messing up his “throw-down” with Mexico… the alternative facts, refusal to distance himself from his business…Who could possibly foresee such a horrific week? Who can honestly look at this without throwing the politics in and feel all is well?
