PDF Editor FAQ

Why is dentistry a separate course rather than a specialization after medical school?

I’m a physician who went to medical school, not a dentist who went to dental school. So there’s that disclaimer. But my mother has worked for the local dentist for the past 23 years and I grew up visiting her at work and knowing her dentist bosses, who are fixtures of the local community. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that dentistry should be a subspecialty of medicine (just like nephrologists specialize in the kidney, cardiologists specialize in the heart, etc.). But dentists have to be both diagnosticians and surgeons. They see men and women. They deal with the very young and the very old and everything in between. They see acute emergencies and routine check-ups. They may deal with infections, pain, bleeding issues, and they may encounter relevant medical conditions that involve things other than the mouth (i.e., heart valve replacement, etc.). They have to interpret X-rays without the assistance of a radiologist. And so on and so forth. For that reason, dentistry is not only historically, but practically, more than a subspecialty of medicine. It is its own independent discipline. No physician — not even a general practitioner — would ever have to deal with such a breadth of patients on a daily basis, acting in so many different roles and with such a wide variety of problems. It really does take a specialized training to prepare them for all of this.Hope that helps,Paul

If you didn't take any science classes in college (undergrad) can you still get into a medical school?

Since the practice of medicine requires both an in depth understanding of science and math is regularly used (i.e. in pulmonary medicine, cardiology, anaesthesiology, nephrology, etc.), you will need to both learn and internalize these subjects to be successful in medical school and medicine in general. Some specialties don't require too much math, but you still need to go through school to get there.

Which one is tough medical or engineering?

Probably the most accurate answer would be ‘it depends.’ The academic requirements of engineering versus medicine are completely different. Engineering requires strong analytic and math skills. Medicine requires strong memorization and social skill. Both require hard work.My undergraduate degree is chemical engineering, I then went to Medical School. I never memorized a single fact in engineering school because we were expected to derive everything. Most of medical school was memorization.Engineering is conceptually more difficult. There is not a single concept in medical school more difficult than freshman physics. The volume of information in medical school however is way more than undergraduate engineering. You have to absorb twice as much information per semester.
