PDF Editor FAQ

Do I need a college degree to become an officer in the military even if I go in enlisted?

Yes and no.To apply to Officer Candidate School (OCS) with the US Army one must have completed somewhere between 60 and 90 semster hours of college credit. Enlisted members are sometimes selected to attend West Point, but more stringent age restrictions apply. Also, there are programs that allow transitioning from active duty into ROTC for the purpose of commissioning and many of those require 60–90 hours of credit prior to acceptance. You may commission through OCS and achieve the rank of 1st Lieutenant prior to degree completion, however, promotion to Captain requires completion of a bachelors' degree in almost all cases. Most ROTC programs will require degree completion prior to commissioning, but barring that, the same restriction on promotion to Captain applies.

Does West Point have any advantages over ROTC and if so what are they?

I am a USMA grad, and my daughter is in third year of Army ROTC and my son will be joining Air Force ROTC this fall. Both of my kids had the qualifications to attend service academies, but they decided against it, and I didn’t really push them, because the advantages of being a service academy grad is not as much as a lot of people think.USMA grads are guaranteed active duty commission. In fact, it is a requirement. ROTC cadets have to compete to get active duty commissions. Otherwise, they can serve in the reserves. If you are committed, intelligent, and mature, you should not have any problem getting an active duty slot.USMA is fully funded, and each cadet gets about 1/2 of 2LT’s salary. In ROTC, you have to earn the scholarship or tuition waiver, and often, it only covers tuition OR room and board.Life is definitely harder at West Point. It’s a grueling, 24/7 battle against time, and you will be challenged academically, mentally, and physically. ROTC requires about 5–10 hours of commitment per week, and activities on some weekends. As for the branch selection and choice of first assignments, they are fairly evenly distributed between USMA and ROTC.In the Army, there really isn’t a lot of favoritism. Strong performance, regardless of your source of commission, will be rewarded, and poor performance will have negative effect. The NCOs may view West Pointers as elitists, but again, they can recognize your intelligence, commitment, and honesty. If you are good, they will respect you and help you.In the civilian world, USMA alums have some advantages. First, alumni network is very strong, and they can help with your transition. Second, West Point is a powerful brand - like Harvard or MIT - and it can open a lot of doors for you. On the other hand, the Corporate America also respects ROTC grad, and there are ROTC grads in management who can recruit and mentor you. Because of prior military officers are in high demand by corporations, you will not have any problem finding a career after military, whether you came from WP or ROTC.What matters the most, IMO, is how has your past experiences prepared you for the challenges you will face in your life - both in professional and personal life. I think West Point was a great experience because of that. It forces you to encounter situations that you are not comfortable with, and you have to find a way to overcome. That to me, was the most valuable part of the whole experience. You can get the same type of experience in ROTC and in the Army, but it is what you make of it. Some people just half-ass their way through ROTC because they can. I think the reason why there are so many high quality ROTC officers is the fact that they have to have the motivation and initiative to excel to stand out among other ROTC cadets, and they carry these traits through their careers.

Should the ROTC program be taught in prisons?

Should the ROTC program be taught in prisons?A bit of common sense.ROTC-Reserve Officers Training Corps. ROTC is a means of training individuals, called cadets, or Candidates if Marines, to become Officers on Active Duty or for Reserve components of the military. An Officer is someone with lawful authority who is given that power by a Commission. One of the powers of a Commissioned Officer is to conduct arrests. A military officer may conduct an arrest, and in many countries, the holstered sidearm is not just a weapon in general, it’s for conducting that arrest. (The actual police officers you see have Commission Cards which enable them to make arrests as well.)A commissioned officer in the military may be given a post of grave responsibility and extensive duties, like becoming a fighter pilot or in the old days, sitting at a missile launcher site, again, with a sidearm to ensure his duties are not interfered with and that others complete their critical tasks. But more commonly, commissioned officers are leaders of units, which may be commands, like a battalion commander, a company commander of a civil affairs unit, or the heads of sections, or areas like a BMO, staff principals like the S-2 Intelligence, and S-3 Operations, or assistants like executive officers, and assistants to staff principals. With that in mind, let’s revisit the question.Should the ROTC program be taught in prisons? No, that would be stupid. And to save time, no, juvenile delinquents shouldn’t be put through surgical colleges and NASA pilot screening shouldn’t be a mandatory requirement in mental hospitals.ffs.
