PDF Editor FAQ

My friend has a Schengen visa which is valid until 2/1/2020. Mistakenly she already confirmed flight ticket with return on 3/1/2020 at 10:00. Is it possible to overstay in Schengen territory for only 10 hours?

In the Schengen system they do not count the hours, they count the days. The visa is valid until 2 January. Your friend wants to leave on 3 January. This is not good.If your friend goes through passport control on 3 January, she has overstayed by one day.Immigration may not say anything about it. They may let her through and she can fly home. So far so good. But the stamp in her passport will forever show that she overstayed by one day!Next time when she wants to apply for a Schengen visa, the consular officer at the embassy will check her history and if he is careful and nasty, he will bring this up.Hello! We have a problem here. You overstayed on your last visit. I am not sure we can give you a new visa!Does your friend want this to happen? Probably not. What to do? I see two solutions here.# 1. Go to the airport on 2 January and check in and go through immigration in the evening before midnight if possible. Wait in the airport in the night and board the plane the next day.# 2. Change the flight to 2 January while the visa is still valid. If there is a fee to change the ticket, just pay the fee. This way you can avoid the problem.Do not overstay!Do not give a consular officer any reason to deny a future application because you overstayed your visa!Remember:They make the rules. They may be unfair, but they have the power. If you wish to travel, you must obey the rules, no matter what you think about them.

Why does the US embassy look for a travel history of an applicant in Nigeria to decide whether the applicant can be granted a visa or not?

Why does the US embassy look for a travel history of an applicant in Nigeria to decide whether it can be granted visa?Travel history is like your Resume. A resume shows your educational attainments, places you've worked in the past as well as your years of experience. When you claim that you need a non-immigrant visa to the US you must as well have a way to convince the consular officer that you are going to return. Though there are other means of showing this but travel history is one of them because it shows where you've travelled to and the date you returned and it also shows to the consular officer if you overstay what your previous visas permitted and it shows what and what countries you have visited. Years ago when i still needed visas to travel, i wanted to visit Paris badly from mauritius where i was living at that moment but all my Nigerian friends that applied were denied at the French Embassy in Port Louis so i decided to apply for a Visitors visa at the same French Embassy but to La Rèunion which is an oversea territory of France about 43mins away from Mauritius Island despite the fact that i have visited more than 14 countries i knew my lack of history of schengen visa then on my Nigerian passport may limit my chances of getting the visa just like the other friends of mine. I received the visa to Reunion Island then i discovered this is not even enough to convince the consular officer when I'll be applying for the schengen visa so i packed my bag and boarded air austra to Reunion and return the following day and 3 weeks later i applied for the schengen visa. Immediately i got to the interview point she asked for my passport and i handed it over to her and the next thing she said was “ Mr Franklin how was your visit to La reunion ?“ i replied with a smile and answered it was too short because i had to return to attend to an emmergency even though i never wanted to spend that extra cash to Reunion Island but it paid off later as that was the only question she asked and normally it was supposed to take 2 weeks to get the visa but the following day i was called to come and pick my schengen visa. What am i trying to say? sometimes they want to know if you are not the type that will escape and run away after receiving a visitors visa to their country. So your travel history of arrival and departure tells a bit of your travel reputattions and it can help you convince the officer that you will leave after the time permitted on your visa is due and may as well boost your visa chances. I hope i was able to provide some clue? Many other honourable Quorans have given their tips. Best of luck always .Franklin Adewale

Do visa officers know your travel history?

Depends on the country you’re talking about. Some countries share information with each other some don’t. So by entering your passport number, some countries will get your travel history. For the visas which require visa interviews (for example USA) it doesn’t matter if they have your history or not because when you visit the consulate to get a visa, you hand over your passport to the visa officer. The visa officer can take a quick look at your travel history by going through your passport. For Schengen visas, even if you submit your documents to the VFS, you submit your passport which has all the travel history, so again they can check your travel history.Countries like Australia are pretty straightforward, they ask you submit copies of all the pages of your passport, even the blank pages. So yes, by default all the visa officers know your travel history.
