My kid was born in Pakistan, where TB is fairly common. He was routinely vaccinated for TB. The vaccine isn’t completely effective, but it reduces the chance of getting the disease.In the US, he needed a TB clearance report from the doctor to start preschool. They administered the TB skin test, which gave a positive. My kid wasn’t showing any symptoms, but people can be non-infective carriers without having symptoms. The doctor recommended an 8 month course of antibiotics to treat him.A little internet research confirmed what I remembered, that the TB vaccine can give a false positive on the TB skin test. I reminded his doctor that he had had the vaccine. She recommended him for a chest X-ray. The chest X-ray report came back positive for TB too.There’s a more sensitive and definitive blood test that they use for adults to check for TB. That test wasn’t rated for kids his age. I was extremely unwilling to start him on 8 months of medicines (with definite side effects) for a disease he might not have.I asked my aunt, who is a pediatrician in Pakistan, for advice. She said, that since TB has been virtually eradicated in the US, doctors there don’t have a lot of experience with it, and that I should ask to see an infectious disease specialist.While waiting for an appointment with an infectious disease specialist, I recieved the news that the Quantiferon test (the TB blood test) was finally rated for kids my son’s age. He took the test, and he DIDN’T have TB.Apparantly, they had mistaken a random blob on the X-ray picture as evidence of an active TB infection.Luckily, my 3 year old son was spared from taking an 8 month course of medicine.

The process was straight forward.For UK, no online appointment is needed but it is better to check with them during public holidays. On a side note, for other countries it is very important to get online appointments as early as possible. The waiting times can be more than a month.I reached the GYD Diagnostics as early as 10′o clock in the morning yet there were many people waiting before me.After some waiting time,I was asked to produce my documents Passport, CAS, and a recent photograph.Then, I had to fill the details regarding my visa and other information.Upon completion, I paid my fee of Rs.1500 through cash (cards were acceptable)After this, I had to wait for the X-ray scanning and the process went smooth.However, one thing that startled me was the certificate will be provided the next day! No where in the website did they mention this.It would have been a disaster if I had decided to take the certificate a day before my visa interview i.e. due to long travel from my village to Hyderabad.Finally, try to get the TB clearance certificate as early as possible and do make arrangements for 1,2 nights stay if you are not from Hyderabad.Hope this helps.
