The speed and ease at which you can finish your degree!I had a very tumultuous time getting my undergrad degree. I started my college career in 2008 with a scholarship for an Engineering degree with the advanced PROMIS program at UH. Not the honors program but very advanced and fast paced. Unfortunately for me, I had zero interest in this program, I only chose it because 1) they gave me a big $3000/year scholarship which, combined with my student loans, seemed like a great way to cover my tuition and living expenses and I was 18 so I didn’t really understand that other schools may have been cheaper and 2) my grandfather was an engineer so my family pushed for it. My mom was also sick with bone/breast cancer so I was living off campus and taking care of her, so my interest was even more dwindling. I attended maybe 20% of my classes and by the Spring semester of my first year my GPA was verrrry low. I was put on probation. In fall of 2009, my mom passed away and I went into a very depressed state and withdrew from school.In 2010 I decided to go back to school but I knew I didn’t want to be an Engineer. I also knew I needed to get a real job fast as my part time job was not covering the cost of my newly inherited utility bills and mortgage. I decided to go for HCCS’s AA in Teaching. They told me it was a workforce degree and I could get a job in as little as two years. HCCS is great for how easy most of the classes are and how low the tuition is but their advisors at the time really screwed me over. I ended up signing up for classes I didn’t need for the first two semesters and wasting lots of time and by the time I started the actual teaching classes I was supposed to be taking, I realized my AA wouldn’t get me a teaching certificate so it wasn’t actually going to help me get the job I wanted. At this point it was 2011 and I was three and a half years into taking the maximum possible student loans to cover my cost of living while in school. I decided to change my plan and get my general AA, which I spent the next year and a half finishing.So five years into taking out the maximum student loans each year I was faced with several problems. I needed a Bachelors to be able to get my teaching certification. I only had a small amount of student loans left before I hit the maximum limit - so small I would only be able to afford a year and a half max at any school. And by this point I had married and had a newborn baby (whom I stayed home with while my husband worked) so going to a college far away was not an option. Even going to a college nearby and being gone for most of the day was not an option.Enter TWU to the rescue! TWU has a General Studies degree that was absolutely perfect for my situation. 1) If you have an Associates degree, you don’t have to take any freshman or sophomore level classes, you only have to take 36 hours of upper-level courses as long as you have a total of 120 credits including your transferred credits when you finish. 2) You pick either two or three concentrations areas out of a long list - and MANY on the list are offered entirely online. 3) The tuition is very fair and was low enough that my student loans covered the full cost even with me taking the maximum 18 hours each semester. 4) They make everything SO easy for online students. Literally any department you need to reach will allow you to contact them by phone or email so you don’t have to drive to the campus to handle your business. And the advisors REALLY know what they’re doing and will do their best to help you reach your goals.I finished my degree in just one year at TWU, graduated in December of 2014, and of all my 6 years of college experiences it was by far the most satisfying and least frustrating one. The classes were very challenging but I felt like I really learned so much in my chosen concentration areas AND the ease of being an online student gave me the flexibility I needed to be able to earn all A’s despite the tough material. My impressive TWU transcript allowed me to actually get into UHD’s grad school without having to take any exams! I would highly recommend anyone with an Associates degree that wants a Bachelors to look into their BGS program.

No I don't feel overwhelmed by how much it has changed. I feel delighted. When I was a child there were white only and colored drinking fountains. There were signs up that. Said whites only. Though right now is a time of cruelty and racism there are no signs up. That is a good change. My father ruled our household totally. He felt he owned my mother and my sister and I. He was not a harsh man just a regular guy. Now men who rule the roost without in put are not as vocal as they once were. Darnel who I worked with and fought off at every turn would not lasta week with todays women. Good change. I watched every launch of NASA saw the men walk on the moon. It was glorious. I was there the day they brought the first computer into the library at TWU. They were called desk top but they were huge. I was there the day we got our first XEROX machine. Now we carry a phone in our pocket. It takes pictures makes phone calls keep track of emails gives us the mews and we can watch movies and read books on it. DNA can help you find relatives you didnt know existed. Kids who lost their limbs can have a hand printed on a 3d printer.We still have the common cold , rascism, sexism ,meatloaf sandwiches , terrible leaders all the things that plague the world, like traffic jams. But so far it's been a wonderful ride. No telling what will happen next. I will be watching out for itThe futures so bright I am going to have to wear shades.
