What recently cancelled (previous 5 years) comedy TV show(s) should be brought back?
I haven’t seen many sitcoms in recent years, as I’ve been too busy trying to catch up with 100’s of drama box sets I’d avoided or missed out on in the last 15 years. However I have decent sized list of comedy shows from the last 5 years (2014–2018) which I’d like to see back on our screens.Car Share (2015–2018) - Network BBC - Channel BBC OneExcellent sitcom from the legend that is Peter Kay, but way too short. Set in a car with 2 supermarket workers on their way to work every day. 12 episodes is not enough, I want more! My 2nd favourite sitcom of all time.Benidorm (2007–2018) - Network ITV - Channel ITVExcellent sitcom. Easily got our money’s worth out of this, with 74 episodes over 11 years, but it could have gone on forever. Set predominantly in a real hotel in Benidorm, Alicante, Spain. It has at least 3 crazy characters every series who are easily the funniest, but even the ones who are relatively sane are funny too. My 3rd favourite sitcom of all time.Great Night Out (2013) - Network ITV - Channel ITVTechnically it’s just outside of the 5 year time frame, but I just had to include it. It’s an excellent sitcom. Created by one of the greatest comedy production companies of all time “Hat Trick Productions”. Only 6 episodes long. I can’t remember much about the show itself, other than it followed 4 mates who spent most of their time at the pub talking about football or their partners, but I do remember it was funny as fuck! The main thing I love about it is the cast as they’ve all starred in a lot of my favoutite shows over the years. There’s William Ash (Waterloo Road, Where the Heart Is, Children’s Ward, Soldier Soldier etc), Craig Parkinson (In with the Flynns, Misfits etc), Lee Boardman (Drop Dead Gorgeous, Coronation Street etc), Stephen Walters (Buried, The Visit, Touching Evil, Wire in the Blood, Skins etc), Naomi Bentley (Grownups, White Van Man, Primeval, Ideal etc), Christine Bottomley (The Street, Heartbeat, The Bill), Rebekah Staton (Pulling), and Ricky Tomlinson (Clocking Off, Mike Bassett: England Manager, Playing the Field, The Royle Family etc). It’s currently 18th on my greatest sitcoms of all time.Big School (2013–2014) - Network BBC - Channel BBC OneExcellent sitcom. As the title suggests it’s set in a school. However instead of focusing on the pupils, it focuses on the teachers. It’s a bit of a mixture between BBC Three’s Bad Education (2012–2014) and ITV’s The Grimleys (1999–2001) as they’re both set in a school, it’s modern like like Bad Education, and has similar characters like The Grimleys PE teacher Doug “Dynamo” Dygby and Big School’s PE teacher Trevor Gunn as they’re both over-the-top alpha males. Only 12 episodes long. It’s currently 24th on my list of greatest sitcoms of all time, however like some of the other sitcoms I’ll be mentioning, I expect it would drop a few places if I went back and watched some of the sitcoms I can’t remember much about again.People Just Do Nothing (2012–2018) - Network BBC - Channel BBC Three and BBC TwoExcellent mockumentary sitcom. Predominantly follows 4 idiots (MC Grindah, DJ Beats, Chabuddy G, Steves), and their 2 mates who rarely speak (DJ Decoy, DJ Fantasy) as they go about their lives running Kurupt FM a pirate garage music radio station. When it’s not focusing on them it’s usually with Miche who is MC Grindah’s girlfriend. Grindah thinks he’s the best MC in the world. Beats has a man crush on Grindah. Steves is always off his head on drugs. Chabuddy thinks he’s a great businessman. And Miche thinks she has model looks. It doesn’t really have that many laugh out loud moments in each episode, however it keeps you wanting more because of the ridiculous things they say and do. This show is legendary! It has 28 televised episodes, and 5 Youtube episodes. Plus there’s 100’s more clips of the Kurupt FM characters on Youtube. It’s currently 28th on my greatest sitcoms of all time.Drifters (2013–2016) - Network Channel 4 - Channel E4Very good sitcom. It’s basically a female version of The Inbetweeners, however instead of following school pupils, it follows recent university graduates. People say that Derry Girls is a female version of The Inbetweeners, as it has more similaries, and I agree with them, however this is the original female version of The Inbetweeners. It’s written by Jessica Knappett from The Inbetweeners Movie, stars 2 more people from The Inbetweeners Movie in Lydia Rose Bewley and Lauren O’Rourke, and is executive produced by The Inbetweeners writers Damon Beesley and Iain Morris. It has 24 episodes. It’s currently 30th on my greatest sitcoms of all time.Crims (2015) - Network BBC - Channel BBC ThreeVery good sitcom. I can’t remember much about it other than it was set in a prison, but it was very very funny. It only has 6 episodes. It’s currently 35th on my greatest sitcoms of all time.Derek (2012–2014) - Network Channel 4 - Channel Channel 4Good mockumentary sitcom. Not great, just good, but worth at least another series. It’s set in a care home, and has a character called Derek played by Ricky Gervais who volunteers at the care home. Derek himself has some form of learning disability as he’s childlike. It has 14 episodes. It’s currently 39th on my greatest sitcoms of all time.Youngers (2013–2014) - Network Channel 4 - Channel E4Good comedy-drama, which could be defined as a sitcom. It follows 3 “youngers” Yemi, Jay and Davina who want to make in the music industry. There’s not that many laughs from what I remember, but it’s a decent watch. The cast was predominantly new inexperienced actors, with just a few established actors. Some of those newbies included the trio Mandem On The Wall who started out on Youtube, and play the same characters in the show. Jovian Wade, Dee Kaate and Percelle Ascott from Mandem On The Wall founded the popular comedy network The Wall of Comedy. It has 16 episodes in total. Youngers is currently 41st on my greatest sitcoms of all time.Pramface (2012–2014) - Network BBC - Channel BBC ThreeA comedy-drama I can’t remember much about, but I do remember it was good. Again like Youngers it could be classed as a sitcom. All I remember is that it’s about a 16yo schoolboy who gets a much more mature 18yo pregnant at a party, and follows their struggles of becoming new parents. I think I watched between 12 and 15 of the 19 episodes. Unranked on my list of greatest sitcoms for that reason. The Revolution Will Be Televised (2012–2015) - Network BBC - Channel BBC ThreeIt’s an excellent satire show. It focuses on things like journalism, politics, big business, and the royal family, but it’s not as boring as it sounds. They’ll do things like: Trolling politicians, governments and government organisations who have been hypocrites and/or thieves. Troll banks, big businesses, charities, bankers, businessmen and charity workers, who are hypocrites and/or thieves. Troll social justice warriors by going to protests, and saying that they like whatever the protesters are protesting against. Just like Sacha Baron Cohen it’s clear the shows creators/performers Jolyon Rubinstein and Heydon Prowse are liberals themselves, but just like Sacha they don’t mind offending their own occasionally, as they realise most SJW arguments are ridiculous. I didn’t realise until last year that they had done similar TV shows and TV films, with some of the same characters, every year since it ended (which I still haven’t seen yet), but I doubt they’ll be as good as this was. It has 19 episodes in total. The Moaning of Life (2013–2015) - Network Sky UK - Channel Sky OneExcellent travel documentary, with the legend that is Karl Pilkington. It’s just Karl travelling the world being Karl. Hilarious as always. There are just 11 episodes.Educating Joey Essex (2014–2016) - Network ITV - Channel ITV2Excellent reality show. If you aren’t British, then you’ve probably never heard of this guy. He started of on a scripted reality show called The Only Way Is Essex or TOWIE for short, which follows people who were already quite rich before they started the show, going about their daily lives. I like most of the UK think TOWIE and similar shows are a load of crap. The cast of TOWIE come from an area of Essex where it seems like everyone is rich as they love splashing the cash. Most of them seem to work as promoters for nightclubs/bars, or in fashion as far as I can tell. Now because they’re all rich, they’re all stupid too, which is no doubt because they thought they didn’t need to pay attention in school, as they could start their businesses with their parents money. Joey however takes stupid to the next level, and that’s why I love him. Educating Joey Essex does (or tries to do) exactly what it says on the tin. It’s basically Joey travelling the UK and the world trying to learn about different things, a bit like how Karl Pilkington does in his shows. If you thought Karl was stupid, then you’ve seen nothing yet. He’s not putting on an act either, and even visits his old school in one episode. He’s literally the dumbest person in England, and I love everything he’s in apart from TOWIE type shows obviously. It has 14 episodes in total.Off Their Rockers (2013–2016) - Network ITV - Channel ITVExcellent prank show. It’s simply old people going around pranking members of the public, just like they do in the original American version Betty White’s Off Their Rockers. There are 28 episodes.Bad Robots (2014–2015) - Network Channel 4 - Channel E4I’ve only seen a few clips of this, but I know I would love the series as a whole. It’s basically a prank show, where machines prank the public. It’s not just machines like the robots above, it’s anything electrical. There are 12 episodes in total.Backchat (2013–2015) - Network BBC - Channel BBC Three and BBC TwoExcellent talk show. Just Jack Whitehall interviewing people, while his dad Michael Whitehall chimes in every now and again with embarrasing stories about Jack, and funny questions. It’s strange how much Michael reminds me of my dad, yet I like Michael, but I don’t like my own. Maybe it’s because it’s Michael’s not my dad, which is why I see him in a different light to how Jack probably sees him. There are 15 episodes. The John Bishop Show (2015) - Network BBC - Channel BBC OneExcellent stand-up/variety show. Again it’s just what it sounds like. It’s basically the legendary comedian John Bishop doing a bit of stand-up in between the different acts he introduces. Obviously not all the acts were to my taste, as different people like different things, but I love John’s stand-up, and most of the acts were good too. It has 8 episodes. It’s A Funny Old Week (2015) - Network ITV - Channel ITVExcellent stand-up/topical comedy news show. Again it’s just what it sounds like. It’s another legendary British comedian in Jason Manford telling jokes and talking about funny stuff he’s seen in the news that week. He’s also joined by another stand-up each week. Basically it’s the same concept as Russell Howard’s Good News. There’s only 4 episodes of this particular show, yet I thought there were more. Now after reading the promo on ITV for this, it looks like he had done 3 end of year specials of the same thing before this was commissioned as a 4 part series. Those shows in 2012, 2013, and 2014 were called A Funny Old Year.Either way, both It’s a Funny Old Week and A Funny Old Year deserve more than the 7 episodes in total. It should have at least 12 episodes spread out throughout the year (3 in each season), every year.Modern Life is Goodish (2013–2017) - Network UKTV - Channel DaveExcellent stand-up show. It stars Dave Gorman a stand-up comedian I had seen before on other comedy shows in the past, but had never really paid attention to, until I saw this. He’s now 10th on my Greatest Stand-Up Comedians list. It’s basically him using talking about different things in his life, things he’s seen in the news, and things he’s seen online etc. He uses Microsoft Powerpoint to explain some of the things he’s talking about, and to show different arguments of why those things make modern life better, or worse. Hence why the show is called Modern Life Is Goodish. He usually talks about 4 or 5 different things in each show, and they all seem unrelated. However he manages to link them together with snippets of things he’d talked about in the other stories. Near the end he will do a poem which consists of ridiculous comments he found online about a particular subject. He calls it a “Found Poem”. And then he finishes off the show by linking all the different subjects he talked about together somehow. He’s a genius!Other sitcoms or comedy-dramas which I haven’t seen yet, but would most likely like, and expect other people would like to see more episodes of include:Bluestone 42 (BBC 2013–2015), Cradle to Grave (BBC 2015), Edge of Heaven (ITV 2014), Give Out Girls (Comedy Central UK 2014), Marleys Ghosts (UKTV 2015–2016), Moone Boy (BBC 2012–2017), Mount Pleasant (Sky UK 2011–2017), Rovers (Sky UK 2016), The Job Lot (ITV 2013–2015), Trollied (Sky UK 2011–2018), among others.
