With an average tenure of 2 years in tech industry, how do software engineers manage to settle down?
A lot of relocation - at least for people who have full-time rather than consultant gigs - is usually by choice. The amount you're relocating is difficult. If it's a question of being able to chase opportunities, you would be best off moving to a place with lots of software engineering jobs in your discipline. In the US this would probably be Seattle, Silicon Valley, or NYC. Then as John Purcell says you have the option of switching jobs without having to move.I'd cross Cambridge off the list of places to work and have high mobility, though. I heard nothing but complaints about it - at least from contractors I hired - being too small a market too far from the other main UK markets. The alternative to relocation is to prioritize stability for your family, and ignore the temptation of other jobs.
America received the Statue of Liberty from France as a gift. Did America give back something equally impressive back to France or other countries?
America received the Statue of Liberty from France as a gift. Did America give back something equally impressive back to France or other countries?Looks like anti-french sentiment has taken a strong foothold on this question. But no, the other answers are all wrong. Liberation from Germany, despite the tremendous value and sacrifice implied, was not a 30/60 year late retribution. What France actually received in return is this:It is a 1:4 scaled replica gifted to France by the american community in France, completed 4 years after its NYC counterpart, coincidental with the French Revolution centenial.Considering the NYC statue of Liberty was sponsored by the french people and gifted on the centenial of the American Independence, it looks like a very fitting retribution to me.Île aux Cygnes - WikipediaI cannot stress enough the invaluable sacrifice made by thousands of americans, australians, , british, canadians, french, polish and others who teamed together and liberated Western Europe including France. Merci/dank je/tussen takk/grazie/dankeshen. I can understand the feelings they can unleash on american people still today and their temptation to stick to their misconception that world history begins in 1914 and ends in 1945.Breaking news: it doesn’t. The world has moved on. France is not eternally in debt to USA, she can leave NATO as she thinks fit, she can develop her own defense including nuclear warheads and she can choose not to support USA’s war “for” terror in Iraq. The american return gift to France finished here. A lot happened later, sure it did, but that is an entirely different story.ADDENDUMComments received so far, it looks to me there may be a serious anti french obsession whereby:Lots of people refuse to acknowledge the OP's question is about the Statue of Liberty and insist in their off-topic, biased views about the Invasion of Normandy.Any chance the french nature of Statue of Liberty could be an embarrasment to thousands or millions of americans? Why else would they deliberately twist this question to WWII?Do americans expect "equally impresive" gifts / recognitions from Italy, Belgium, Netherland, Luxembourg, Denmark... or is their resentment just with France?Do americans realize their country was not the only one (neither the biggest one) to shed blood to liberate France & Western Europe? Do they care?Did USA enter WWII expecting to convert France and Europe into vassal states? In that case, I understand their bitterness towards the french. However, if their goal was a free, democratic, capitalist, peacefull and open to trade continent, their success is probably still greater than what was achieved on the other theatre of war.Likewise, if the french expectation from the Statue of Liberty had been to receive another 150 feet (50 metre) high copper statue, then their gift was a failure. However, if their goal was to recognize a free nascent country, they have been honoured in excess.Piece of advice: honour your history and take pride of your decisive contribution on WWII and its aftermath and in what both Europe and Asia Pacific has become thereafter. Take pride of the freedom your country embodies and of the early recognition recievied from a top world power of the time. There is a spanish expression which in english translates roughly to "who has it longest". You really, really want to drop that rat race. USA is certainly greater than you folks are showing …
Why can't I find a boyfriend in NYC? I have tried everything and I am a quite decent girl with above average looks and good job. How do I find serious guys in NYC?
This is just my very subjective opinion. NYC is a horrible place to date, if you want more then casual sex. I lived there for 8 months and everyone’s mentality was just to get laid as much as possible, preferably with the hottest models. It could just be that I was looking in the wrong places, I mean I was going out a lot and partying, clubbing, going to bars etc.But anyway I think there’s just too much temptation and an illusion of endless suply of potential mates… too much variety available in a city that big, makes people think they should place unreasonable demands on potential partners - and if they aren’t perfect to my mental image of what I want a mate to be, well… I can just go fish again!!Not to say people don’t find love there all the time, I’m sure they do. I personally don’t find NYC to be a family oriented place, I think to find a good guy to settle with, you should move out of the city. That will also change your own mentality, see while I wanted to find love back when I lived there, I also saw soooo many hot guys all over the place - and that didn’t encourage a commitment mindset, in me either.I moved to a smaller city and found love within a few months, and now it’s been 6 years and going great! Worth a try, unless you’re stuck there for work.
