The closest major port to Australia is Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. PNG isn't a member of any specific treaty organizations, so invading it isn't guaranteed to bring down the wrath of anyone else. It's extremely likely to do so, but it's not guaranteed. Because this isn't an answer about how to conquer PNG,[1] let's just assume you've already accomplished that.93 miles of water - the Torres Strait - separate PNG and Australia. How you're going to set up the facilities to do this without tipping off everyone to the idea that you're going to invade and thus causing a pre-emptive strike to get launched, I don't know.So even though PNG is closest, PNG doesn't work - at least, not by itself. We need another big port in the area - what about Jakarta? Again, this leads to the problem of having to take over Java, but let's take that as fait accompli. So now we've got Port Moresby and Jakarta. Logistically, we might be okay, right?Yeah, no.Jakarta is located terribly for invading Australia. In the absolute best (and impossible) case, you take part of Western Australia - and then you're forced to stop, because invading the Outback is dangerous, expensive and pointless. And whatever troops you do have in the Western Australia (you'd want to go for Perth), you'd need to actively resupply from Jakarta, which leaves a massive target for the ANZUKUS forces to hit from the safety of the airbase at Diego Garcia. And if you went from Jakarta to Australia's southeastern population hub, the Seventh Fleet would intercept you before you got there. To put it bluntly, you'd be more boned than the average chicken nugget.In short, the only way this invasion stands anything remotely approaching the possibility of success is if Australia ceases being a US ally. This requires a world fundamentally different from the one we inhabit, because if we're being honest, the Australians put up with a good deal from the US already, and nothing you do is going to be more profoundly irritating to the Aussies than decades of US tourists going to Australia, ordering Foster's,[3] not shutting up about dingoes eating babies[4] and talking about "shrimp on the barbie."[5] There was also that time that an American family brought a bullfrog to Australia and destroyed the natural ecosystem there, although that might be one of those instances where The Simpsons weren't going for accuracy.But if you somehow did diplomatically isolate Australia - and again, I've no idea how you'd do it - you'd need to somehow get from Port Moresby around the Great Barrier Reef down to New South Wales and Victoria.[6] The whole way, you'd be harried by Australian planes and ships, so you would need a seriously large and well-equipped military to pull it off. The west would be a pain in the neck to feed, though you might be able to make that pay if you took Perth and the mining community around it. And as for the east of the country, it's not particularly wealthy in natural resources. A very nice place to live, to be sure, but you've already got one country under your control, so why not just go with that?The better choice here is to become PM of Australia. I mean, yes, Canberra's culture has generally been claimed to be slightly less hospitable than a pit of excessively irate vipers, and yes, to the best of my knowledge it's the only Commonwealth realm where the representative of HM the Queen has ever dismissed a sitting PM, and yes, you won't have absolute power over Australia, but you would get to live in a place called Kirribilli House,[7] so you know, it kind of balances out.[1] And good thing, too, because the best way of going about that is to invade from Australia.[2] New Zealand is, as one might expect, not a major military power.[3] Every country has that beer that people in other countries think is a classy import emblematic of that beer's home country, which the people in that home country (or else ones close to it) think is absolute junk.
