How was your US visa interview experience?

Appearing for an American Visa Interview is a nightmare for many. In this answer I would detail my US Visa Interview Experience at the US Embassy in Doha, Qatar.Visa Category: Business (B1)Nationality/Passport: IndiaResident of Qatar, working as an Engineer. My scope of work is into Healthcare Robotics.I received my letter of invitation on 15th of July evening from our business associate in Los Angeles. The same evening itself I filled my DS-160 form and got my DS-160 Submission Confirmation. I began collecting my documents and preparing them for the next two days and on 17th July I opened their appointment portal to fetch a slot for my interview and fortunately the rush in US Embassy was a bit less so I got my appointment for 19th of July. This quick turnaround time may come as a big surprise for people living in India as I have seen the long lines outside Mumbai Consulate.19th of July finally arrived and my appointment was scheduled for 09.45am. I was a bit nervous but my preparation was exhaustive as I had a strong itinerary and papers to prove my application. I arrived a bit early at the embassy, but they did let me in. They verified my documents and my fingerprints were captured and subsequent to that I was asked to move ahead to a big hall were around 100 people were sitting and waiting for their number to be called. I could see 3 Counters where VOs where calling in applicants and were interviewing them. I had to wait almost for an hour and by 10.30 am I could see my number being called on the display system. I rush ahead to the counter and the conversation starts as following:VO (A young American guy in his early 30s) : Hi, Can I have your passport please?Me: Good Morning! Sure (Hands over my Passport)VO: What is the purpose of your travelMe: I go business meetings in America with our associateVO: Okay, Which place you would be going to?Me: Los AngelesVO: Can I have the letter from your employer?Me: Hands over the letter, in the meantime VO keeps typingVO: Can you describe more about your meetings over there?Me: I got a business review with our associate over there and later on I need to be at UCLA to see their Robotic System in Action. I also need to sit with them for clinical paper reviews.VO: Who exactly you will be meeting there?Me: I will be meeting their Commercial Head and Clinical Support TeamVO: Since how long you are here?Me: 07 monthsVO: Why your employer wants to send you?Me: Since I spearhead the robotics business in my organisation, they find my presence to bring more value proposition for our growth in business.VO: Where were you employed before this?Me: In IndiaVO: Which other countries you have been to?Me: I have been to UAE & Oman twice for business and around two months back I had been to Sweden and Denmark for business meetings.VO: Have you been to the Netherlands?Me: No! In Qatar, Netherlands is responsible for handling visa applications for Sweden and Denmark and that is why you can see a visa stamp in my passport from the Embassy of Netherlands in Doha.VO: Were you working with the same employer in India?Me: No, I was working with another employer but I was into the same business function of healthcare robotics.VO: What kind of business is operated by your employer?Me: Medical Devices and Pharmaceutical Distribution & Supply to all healthcare institutions in Qatar and I look after New Innovation & Robotics Division in this.VO: Can I have your bank statement?Me: Yes, and hands over the statement ( He doesn't even takes a look on my statement)VO: Are you married?Me: Not yet, I am singleAfter all these questions, he keeps typing in his system for a while and I keep looking at him with confidence. A few moments later:VO: Okay! Everything sounds great, Your visa has been approved for 10 years with multiple entry. You can collect your passport from ARAMEX Office once you receive an email.Me: Thank you so much & God Bless these United States of America!I leave the counter with a big smile and rush back to office for work. The only tip I got to give is to be confident while answering, be honest and prepare your application with maximum details. You got one goal and this is to convince him that you would return back to your country of Residence and wont be a national threat to America.Good Luck!

Have you ever been treated differently at an airport because of your passport?

It was the fall of 1987. I arrived in Canada a few months prior as a landed immigrant, having been granted asylum as a refugee from a then communist country, and having been sponsored for immigration by my beloved aunt who lives here in Ottawa.I arrived early summer, and within a few weeks, much to my amazement, found a consulting assignment. It was not very high paying, to be sure, but it was enough for me to move out of my aunt’s house, rent an apartment and pay the bills, with some disposable income left. The same day I arrived in Ottawa, one of my closest friends from high school arrived in New York City to start a new life there. Now that I was settled in Canada, I could consider visiting him. Ottawa is just a one hour flight from New York, so a weekend trip was possible.First, though, I had to get a visa. I was still traveling with a Hungarian passport; my Canadian residency was represented by a separate document. And as a citizen of Hungary, I needed a visa to enter the United States. One of the advantages of life in a capital city is that embassies and consulates are nearby; the US Consulate was within walking distance from the office where I worked, and back in those innocent, pre-9/11 days, getting a visa was as simple as walking in (no security checks or metal detectors), presenting my passport, filling out a form and waiting some 15 minutes. It did cost a few dollars but there I was, in proud possession of a single entry US visa.Next I got my ticket at a travel agency (no Expedia back then.) It was not a direct flight. Rather, a long-gone regional carrier, Piedmont Airlines, took me to upstate New York, the fine city of Syracuse, which was one of their hubs. At the time, there was no US preclearance at Canadian airports, so I had to go through US customs and immigration in Syracuse, where, as I recall, we just walked into the single-storey terminal building from our parked aircraft (I understand that they have built much upgraded terminal facilities there since.)So when we landed, we indeed walked into the building and stood in line for US immigration. Finally, it was my turn. A middle aged immigration officer took my passport. When he realized that it was an unusual passport from a strange part of the world, there was visible disgust on his face. He lifted out my Canadian Landed Immigrant documentation (a folded, legal-size sheet of paper) and held it pinched between two fingers. Looking at me, he asked where I was from. I said I was a landed immigrant in Canada, citizen of Hungary. He said, “I bet you don’t have a visa.” I replied that yes, I did. Then came the clincher: he presented a form to fill out, shoved it under my nose and asked, “Can you write?”I swallowed my pride, just took the pen that was offered, and completed the form. One life skill you learn when you grow up in a communist police state is never to argue with a person in uniform who has the power to make your life miserable at little or no cost to him.I arrived in New York safely, spent a memorable weekend there, went up the old World Trade Center for a breathtaking view, had a great lunch with my friend at a Hungarian restaurant at what was still a functioning remnant of NYC’s once vibrant Hungarian expat community, and returned to Canada without trouble Sunday evening. As an epilogue to this story, I went back to the US Consulate a few weeks later for another visa, since I was sure I was going to visit NYC again soon. However, when it was my turn, I was not asked for any money. This was unexpected since there was a fee for visas. My concern grew when I was handed my passport with a piece of paper sticking out of it. Was my visa application rejected for some reason? No, it wasn’t. Instead of a visa, I received a stamp in my passport that was a US border crossing permit. It allowed the bearer, a resident of Canada, to cross into the United States anytime for business or pleasure (not for work, of course.) The permit was free, and the slip of paper was simply an explanatory note that told me, among other things, that the permit would remain valid in perpetuity, even after the passport expires. This was the travel document I used to enter the United States for the next several years, before I became a proud Canadian citizen. For all I know, I could still use it to enter the United States from Canada.

What could be possible reasons for the denial of a B1/B2 visa for a person with good credentials, education, job, official sponsorship, & a well explained, valid reason to travel? The visa officer rejected the application after 3 petty questions.

Firstly, all information about a person being interviewed is gathered by various US intelligence agencies the moment you fill up the DS 160. With the available information they evaluate whether the person could become a possible Immigrant. With this information on hand, they ask questions to ratify what information they have gathered about the Immigrant/ non Immigrant intent of the applicant and a couple of questions is good enough to come to a conclusion.US is the only country that doesn't ask for bank balance, asset details or sponsorship. Many people assume that showing more assets and credentials add value. One needs to understand that a job and education don't indicate strong ties to the country for a person to come back. Quite a substantial amount of Indian tourists who travelled to US on a valid visa and stayed back were highly qualified people with good jobs and they had a set of friends and relatives who helped them land a job in US and then file papers to legalize their stay in US resulting in prolonged court cases, while the person continued to work during the litigation. In this process an eligible US citizen or green card holder was denied the job that this new visit visa holder took. We call such people as illegal immigrants and the second largest number of illegal immigrants in US are IndiansPeople who just filled the DS 160 and has no back up documents are those who have easily obtained a visa, because they were able to prove strong ties to their country of residence, while not having any assets. Many people and even agents tend to misunderstand that US follows same procedure as Europe. No it doesn't. In fact it follows an opposite procedure. To give an example, two brothers attended the interview together. The elder brother was studying MBBS 3rd year in a reputed Medical College in India..the younger brother was studying 2nd year BA Sociology in an unknown college. They wanted to visit US to spend holidays with their sister .At the interview the MBBS student was asked the purpose of his visit. He said he wants to visit his sister in the US. Visa rejected. The BA sociology brother was asked the same question. He responded by saying that he has a semester break and was thinking of spending a couple of weeks with his sister in US before he gets back to college. Visa approved. The difference was in the quality of the answer. Evaluation for both would have yielded same results by the US intelligence agencies. The MBBS brother was asked a question and he did not understand that he is being queried for his non Immigrant intent. And he only conveyed be wants to visit his sister. But the younger brother very clearly conveyed that he has strong ties his country because he is committed to his education and is just going for a semester break. In the less than 30 seconds, he was able to convey his non Immigrant intent. On the face of it, it would look as is the MBBS student's ties to his education was stronger because of the course he was doing. Unfortunately, he did not communicate that. So, no question is petty. We may deem it so. They evaluate thousands of applicants and are well trained to assess a person in less than a couple of minutes with all the information gathered about the applicant by US intelligence agencies after DS 160 was filled up.In fact a couple of months back a couple from Hyderabad applied through an agent and they were rejected twice. I had to tell them that unfortunately agents have no clue as to how US visa process works. They assume that the same process applicable for Europe is applicable to US. I told them US visa process is user friendly and not to trust anyone and do it themselves and not to waste money on agents. They then filled up DS 160 themselves and attended the interview without help from anyone. Only instruction i gave them is to be truthful and when they respond to interview questions, keep in mind that the question is to evaluate non Immigrant intent and gather more information indicating non Immigrant intent, other than what is gathered in DS 160. They got the visa and are flying out after Diwali. And then they figured out the agents had given wrong information in tge DS 160 and it was not the truthNowadays, they also evaluate social media to ascertain non Immigrant intent. One needs to be watchful as to not post anything that would indicate Immigrant intent on social media.I know how it feels when visa doesn't go through. But then this is the reality and people are doing great without a US visa. So let them reserve their rights to allow whom they want to let in US.
