Came back, smiling tightly. Made another call. His doctor came out, got on the phone. Anger. Disbelief. His doctor could not believe that Johns Hopkins would refuse to give a chance to a 27 year old man, healthy except for a f**king brain tumor, because he was on Medicaid. He had no health insurance, because he couldn’t work. He couldn’t work because he had a brain tumor. Before it was diagnosed, he’d been going to school while holding down 2 part-time jobs.Yes. People die in the United States of F**king America because they have no health insurance.Oh, and by the way, I don’t have more recent data, but in 2012, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System president Ronald Peterson had base pay of $1.2 million with a bonus of more than $450,000, according to disclosure forms. A rich white woman is as safe in Baltimore City as she is anywhere in the world, again as long as she isn't involved in the drug trade.A young poor black man without an education who finds his options for employment limited and finds himself in the drug trade has probably a 75% chance of reaching the age of 50. There is a saying here, live large, die young and leave a good looking corpse.As one drives through the tougher parts of town, both the East Side and West Baltimore, one can’t help but notice the number of young black men hanging on the sidewalk in motorized wheelchairs. In another city, these men would never had received a second chance at life.Put another way, what the statistics don't tell you is this, the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma center in Baltimore City is the best trauma hospital in the world. The US military send their docs to train here before they go into combat medicine. The number of lives that the fine medical professionals save each day is awe inspiring. Many of these folks, car accident victims, workplace accidents and sadly crimes of violence victims in almost any other city would have died. As awful as Baltimore’s murder rate is, it would be far higher if it weren't for The University of Maryland Hospital shock trauma team saving the lives of so many victims of violence.
