When I was young, I played football at school. I was one of only a couple of girls, but that wasn’t something I really thought about at all - I’d grown up with the group and could hold my own fine.One day, we were playing a football-related game before school. I kicked, it was the next person’s turn, so I waited for him to come take my place. He was new to the school, and I hadn’t actually met him yet. I wasn’t 100% sure before, but I knew he was being mean then.I ran and jumped on him from behind, grabbed his long blond hair and smashed his head into the ground repeatedly until it was red. Then redder. The ground was red. A teacher ran over and pulled me off of him.It’s hard for me to remember exactly, but there was a lot of trouble for me after that. Lots of meetings, doctors, ‘what exactly do you have to say for yourself, Ali?’’s and ‘you will apologize right this instant!’s. It’s a blur.I do very clearly remember the expression a lot of them had when I asked them what he meant when he said ‘for a girl.’ I am good at football. They know that. Anyone can see that. Why would he say that?I didn’t understand. God. Smh. I was so confused at the time and thinking on it now makes me cry. I wasn’t allowed to play football at school anymore because it was inappropriate for little girls, so I figured out what was going on soon enough.But I did fix that one cunt right up real quick and he stayed clear of me after that, so take the little win I suppose.
