How is the 'start-up' culture at Columbia University?

Pretty vibrant. The university's taking a lot of initiatives to promote entrepreneurship on campus. Interest in startups is on the rise and the community has benefited from the local growth of "Silicon Alley" in New York. There are lots of student-run organizations on campus like CORE, CEO and ADI (links below) that have hundreds of entrepreneurship and technology related events every year. Dorm Room Fund NYC is also a resource for Columbia students to apply for funding while in college. I've had multiple friends drop out to work full-time on their startups and think we have a pretty strong startup culture here at Columbia. There have also been a couple of great companies from Columbia alumni in the past few years like Codecademy and GroupMe.Links to check out:Columbia EntrepreneurshipWelcome to The Eugene Lang Entrepreneurship ProgramColumbia Organization of Rising EntrepreneursColumbia Entrepreneurs OrganizationApplication Development Initiative

How do investment bankers, management consultants or private equity analysts/associates get into the top business schools?

Aside from the strong numbers (GMAT above 720, GPA above 3.6 from a prestigious undergraduate institution) that finance-industry applicants need to bring to their Harvard MBA applications, leadership is the #1 driver of admissions. Most young people in these industries take on their most prominent leadership roles during undergrad ( be involved, be VERY involved). But sometimes it’s possible to continue leadership roles even in finance, for example by spearheading CSR initiatives that rope in your colleagues for volunteer days once a month.Another option I recommend to undergrads who are planning ahead is to connect at least some of your extracurricular leadership in university to large community organizations, such as the Cancer Society or Special Olympics, which you will be able to continue an involvement with, albeit at a less intensive level, during your 80-hour-a-week careers. A continuous role over several years has more traction than a new involvement the same year you’re applying for the MBA.A third option is to be an active ambassador for your undergraduate institution. You can stay involved in the alumni organization or business students organization, and give occasional presentations to graduating students or host visiting students in your city. The point is, with a little creative thinking and a lot of advance planning, even investment bankers can continue to have the kind of engaged community citizenship that top business schools value.

What are the best extracurricular activities to be involved in at UT-Austin?

There are tons of organizations at UT catering to all kinds of interests, demographics, majors, careers, etc... so the best extracurricular activities to be involved in at UT will vary from person to person.I am nearing the end of my freshman year at the moment and so far, I have been active most in Women in Computer Science, Empowering Leadership Alliance , and a little bit in the Association for Computing Machinery. I recommend all of these clubs if you're a computer science major. You'll make great friends who are also CS majors at UT, network with corporate recruiters and gain internships, get increased exposure to professors and research in the department, and many more neat things (including lots of free food). I also suggest joining MAD (Mobile App Development) if you're interested in learning to program mobile apps. Both Android and iOS lessons are offered weekly for all levels. Some non-CS specific activities that I have heard from friends are great to be involved in include Texas 4000 (as the previous two people who answered this thread recommended, it's an amazing organization where you'll enjoy yourself, contribute to a great cause, and get fit all at the same time). Another great organization is Orange Jackets - you must have completed a certain amount of hours before you can apply but it's a prestigious honorary organization for women of UT that serve as the official hosts of the University. Though the application process is rigorous and admission is highly selective, you'll become a part of a group of the most talented and driven women on campus. A scholarship is also offered to some Jackets. More such organizations include the various Councils which are focused on student governance (ex: College of Natural Science Council, Student Engineering Council, etc...). A full list of these councils can be found here: Registered Student Organization Database - every college has a council.UT Austin has a highly diverse student body so it's only natural that the extracurricular activities it offers to its students reflects that diversity. There are clubs that range from Intramural Sports and Club sports to lock picking to Asian Business Students Association to spirit groups like Texas Lassos to Indian Bhangra dance teams to Greek letter organizations to Women in Computer Science to Rocketry and so on. Here's the link to the full Registered Student Organization Database. If you find that a club you're interested in that doesn't already exist, it's very easy to establish one - all you need are three or more currently enrolled students, $10, and completion of some quick steps involving HornsLink (the online platform that's used by UT to coordinate involvement in student organizations) and the new student organization application.
