PDF Editor FAQ

What kind of students does MIT accept? Can a person with some not so bright grades, but is actually really brilliant be accepted?

I know this question is super old, but as I'm one of those cases you're asking about, I figured I would share my experience. After high school I went to college and basically failed miserably. I had to repeat calc 1 to get a passing grade, and by my third semester had lost my scholarship, and subsequently, my parents funding of my education. So, I joined the military, and spent several years there. After leaving the military, I spent a year at my local community college and competed the necessary courses to get an associate's to transfer to a state school with no additional requirements for application other then my transcripts. I should point out, my college gpa before the Navy hovered around a 2, sometimes lower, and hovered around a 3.8 with a couple 4.0 semesters post Navy. I applied to MIT and University of Illinois - Chicago to finish my bachelors. The admission team was as straight forward with me and as open about the process as the Institutes policies allowed, which is not much beyond telling me what I needed to do differently as a transfer applicant. In the most depressing email I've received in my life, they told me my current transcripts weren't enough to overcome my first attempt at college. They recommended if I was truly interested, I should reapply when I had an additional semester of grades on my transcripts. I did. Halfway through my first semester at UIC I received an offer of admissions from MIT, and let's face it, if you get one of those, you take it, you'd be crazy not to.Additional details: I didn't get 800 (I barely made the competitive cutoff) on the SAT I took as part of my application. I didn't have straight A's in my math and science courses I had to complete to get my associates. Two things stand out for me, one in my application process and one during my first week on campus. At the traveling info session I attended while competing my application, the presenter commented that MIT isn't only looking for 800 SAT robots who have 4.0’s in all their AP courses. Rather, they are looking for people with passions in their lives. At a speech during orientation, one of the presenters held up his hand in the old '80s heavy metal pose (index and pinky fingers sticking out with everything else tucked) and said something to the effect of we're hear because we each have a passion that we're good at, and when you take enough of those people, you get fantastic ideas and discoveries in science. When people like that come together, you can change the world.tl/drHaving something that makes you an interesting person is just as valuable as being a robot in the classroom.Barely a day goes by where I am not humbled by the raw talent of other students in my class, and I'm willing to bet other people look at me the same when it comes to certain topics.

Do we need to send the original transcripts to all of the colleges or is only the attested copy required?

As already mentioned by Mihir and Alisha Basheer, it varies from university to university. Some universities(UIC, UB) have a completely online process meaning you don't need to send any document as part of the application process whereas Kelley, UC require official transcripts to evaluate your application. Also, for colleges like TAMU and CMU, you'll need a copy of the official transcript to send to the evaluating agencies(WES/ECE). So, the number of transcripts you request from your university would depend upon the number of universities you apply to and the universities which require the official transcript. Also, don't forget to get one or two spare copies of the transcript.

How long does it take for the transcripts to reach a university in the USA when sent from Chennai?

When I applied (2007), DHL/Others I've seen reach in 3-5 working days (7, was the max/worst case I saw). I had used India Post's Speed Post service which was pretty a 5-7 day duration. I had one packet reach in 5 days (UIC, if my memory serves me right)
