Hopefully this isn't too late, I just noticed your A2A today.In my previous position, I was put in charge of the interns for the course of a year for the Quality department. I selected and hired (with some help) 3 different interns. The feedback I got from them was fantastic, but I used my own experiences as an intern to help me direct their work.What I did was thrust them into responsibility and engineering work. One of the interns was assigned to support an assembly line. After 2 weeks of showing him around, I cut him loose and left him to his own devices. One young lady was challenged to connect with our plant fabrication group because I knew they were struggling and needed help. She turned around and ended up driving 2 or 3 major projects from start to finish. The 3rd one ended up assigned a number of key development projects for the department and ended up redesigning our tracking program (he had a penchant for programming) and ended up being the go-to guy for programming projects during his entire tenure.That being said. The best way to engage an intern is to give them responsibility and treat them like a full engineer. That doesn't mean you aren't there to help and support. I preferred to meet with my interns on a regular basis to discuss projects, plans, and to make sure they were keeping busy. Some needed it more than others. As their project leader, I was responsible to report out to my boss on their activities regularly.The best input I got from those interns was that they didn't like any places where they felt "held back" by us due to their lack of experience. The overall impression was that the more "real" the work, the more valuable they felt. I know that at least one of those interns went on to become a Quality Engineer.
