Why does the government not improve the IRCTC website?

What sort of improvement exactly do you want? I am sharing some of the improvement's made on IRCTC website over the year.Internet Ticketing:Internet ticketing on IRCTC website was started in year 2002 with 29 tickets on the first day. This has now increased to more than 13 lakh tickets booked in a single day (achieved on 01/04/2015).Internet ticketing on IRCTC website has progressively increased over the years and its share in the total reserved tickets has also progressively increased.Due to increased demand of e-ticketing and capacity constraint there were problems in ticket booking process and complaints of website slowness and non availability. The Next generation e-ticketing system(NGeT) was launched on 28/04/2014 to handle increased ticket booking. The capacity was increased from 2000 tickets in a minute to 7200 tickets in a minute . The capacity of NGeT was further increased to 15000 tickets in a minute in 2015 to book tickets fast and easily. The e-tickets may be booked easily and faster through website and the IRCTC website is able to handle 15000 tickets per minute at present. The concurrent user connections were increased from 40,000 to 1,20,000 in NGeT, which has further been increased to 3,00,000 before Diwali rush. The enquiries in NGeT have also been increased from 1000 per second to 3000 per second. Capacity in NGeT was increased this year by doubling the servers in integration layer and adding storage space.Scripting:A scripting or script language is a programming language that supports scripts, programs written for a special run-time environment that automate the execution of tasks that could alternatively be executed one-by-one by a human operator. Scripting languages are often interpreted (rather than compiled). Primitives are usually the elementary tasks or API calls, and the language allows them to be combined into more complex programs. Environments that can be automated through scripting include software applications, web pages within a web browser, the shells of operating systems (OS), embedded systems, as well as numerous games. The scripting technology is also useful to automate the process of filling the data in web pages at client end. The scripting is available in google chrome, Mozila and other browsers.CAPTCHA:CAPTCHA Tells Humans and Computers Apart Automatically. A CAPTCHA is a program that protects websites against attacks by generating multiple automatic requests using scripting technology or other computer program. In general, a CAPTCHA is used to prevent abuse by automated scripts.Scripting on IRCTC website:The demand of Tatkal and ARP (Advance Reservation Period) tickets is increasing day by day hence use of Scripting technology is also increasing on IRCTC website client end web pages for filling up the various forms used during ticket booking process for faster booking. This Scripting technology and tools are being used by programmers for developing software like Black TS etc for faster filling the forms used during ticket booking process. The parameters at client end can be easily seen by programmers of any website and may be used for scripting. The scripting tools, technology is available online and Google Chrome and Mozilla Browsers support the scripting. The scripting software for input at client end may be developed easily for any website. Since the scripting at client end cannot be stopped, the impact of the use of scripting technology has been negated by the various checks in the form of Captcha , Time delay and other server side checks. Banks have also implemented OTP in net banking to control the automated booking using scripting software/tools.Checks Implemented on IRCTC website to stop misuse of Internet Ticket booking facility by the use of automated softwares:Registration:CAPTCHA is implemented on IRCTC website at Registration page to stop automated registrations.Single email, single Registration is also implemented on website to stop multiple registrations on one Individual email-id. Verification link is sent to email-id for verification.Single Mobile, single Registration is also implemented on website to stop multiple registrations on one Individual Mobile. OTP (One time password) is sent to mobile to verify Mobile.Booking:(i) Minimum form filling time check implemented in passenger reservation form.(ii) Minimum payment time check implemented for payment process.(iii) Only two Tatkal tickets can be booked for single user ID in opening Tatkal Hrs. i.e 10-12 hours .(iv) Maximum 12 tickets in a month can be booked on an user ID if its linked to aadhar card.(v) One user can do only one login at one point in a time.(vi) Only one Tatkal ticket in single session (except return journey).(vii) Only two opening Tatkal tickets per IP address.(viii) OTP (One time password) is implemented in net banking payment options.(ix) Captcha is implemented at login, Reservation Form page and Payment page.Time taken in Booking of ticket:The Next Generation e-Ticketing System (NGeT) is able to handle load of 15000 tickets in a minute. Hence 250 tickets can be booked concurrently in a second. At best, an individual user can book his ticket in 35 seconds.. The time taken for ticket booking depends upon the speed of internet at client end, form filling speed of individual and bank response time. At reservation counters, a ticket can be booked in less than 35 seconds. To stop the misuse of website various time checks and Captcha have been implemented as discussed above. With these checks in place, it is not possible to book any Opening Tatkal ticket by any software being sold in the market earlier than 35 seconds. Tables shown below which indicate first 35 seconds bookings and 36th second to 60th second booking separately at 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM for Opening Tatkal at PRS counters vis a vis IRCTC website.Table-D: First Minute Tatkal ticket booking in AC Classes at 10:00 AM.Table-E: First Minute Tatkal ticket booking in Non AC Classes at 11:00 AM.From the above tables, it is clearly evident that while it is possible to book tickets through human process at PRS counters within first 35 seconds, it is not possible to book any Tatkal ticket in first 35 seconds on IRCTC website even by using scripting software. The claim made by various software sellers in the market that their software can book Tatkal in 10 to 20 seconds is not factually correct. Further, only 5 to 6 Thousand tatkal tickets are booked in the first minute both at PRS counters and IRCTC website put together out of the total 1.5 lakhs Tatkal tickets available on PRS. This again is contrary to the claim made by the media that entire Tatkal tickets are booked within first 30 seconds by using automated software.Security measures to control HackingMultilayered security with deep defense in the NGeT system:1. State of the art perimeter security in the data center comprising of front-end & backend firewall, network intrusion prevention system, Web application firewall, Security information event management(SIEM) , host intrusion prevention system (HIPS), OS hardening on all servers , Web/App server hardening, database server hardening, Spring security framework in the application software.2. All best practices for ensuring security in the application software have been followed. All 10 OWASP (Open Web Application Security Project) application software vulnerabilities have been addressed..3. By dint of these security measures, no hacking attempt has been successful on the NGeT system. All intrusion or Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attempts have been thwarted.Third party auditPeriodic external audits are being conducted. In a recent audit done by STQC (Standardization, Testing and Quality Certification) ,DeitY, Govt. of India, the auditing agency has certified that the web application is free from OWASP top 10 and any other known vulnerabilities; and is safe for hosting.Pre-launch Source code audit by Cert-In (Computer Emergency Response Team - India), DeITY Govt. of India, was conducted.Real -time feed of internet traffic to Cert-IN for security alerts:Packet headers of traffic traversing through internet gateway routers are forwarded in real-time to CERT-In for their analysis & reporting. In response, CERT-In sends real time alerts (in case some malicious activity is detected) and weekly reportsSource:- pib.nic.in

What is SAT? What is its full form? Where can I take this exam?

SAT is scholastic aptitude test.It is taken by students to get admission in undergraduation in US universities and colleges.About the exam:The SAT is owned and published by theCollege Board, a private, for-profit corporationin the United States. It is developed and administered on behalf of the College Board by the Educational Testing Service.[3]The test is intended to assess a student's readiness for college. The SAT was originally designed to be not aligned to high school curricula. The current SAT, introduced in 2016, takes 3 hours to finish plus 50 minutes for the SAT with essay, and as of 2014 costs US$52.50 (up to US$101.5 outside of the United States), excluding late fees.[6]Possible scores on the SAT range from 400 to 1600, combining test results from two 800-point sections: Mathematics and Critical reading and Writing. Taking the SAT or its competitor, the ACT, is required for freshman entry to many, but not all, universities in the United States.Structure:SAT consists of three major sections: Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. Each section receives a score on the scale of 200–800. All scores are multiples of 10. Total scores are calculated by adding up scores of the three sections. Each major section is divided into three parts. How to take SAT?In other countries, the SAT is offered on the same dates as in the United States except for the first spring test date (i.e., March or April), which is not offered. The SAT costs $54.50 (plus additional fees if testing outside the United States).[6]The College Board makes fee waivers available for low income students. Additional fees apply for late registration, standby testing, registration changes, scores by telephone, and extra score reports (beyond the four provided for free). For more information about SAT: The College BoardGo to this link for detailed description about SAT and how to take and other related queries go to above mentioned link.P.S: I hope this was helpful.

At the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IITR), given the choice, which is the better place to join, IMG or SDSLabs? Why?

Let me start by saying that I have been a part of IMG for over two and a half years now. I have no hard feelings towards SDSlabs (considering the question description), and I believe that my SDSlabs counterparts feel the same as well. The work that we do is same as well as different. It is same in the way that we make web or mobile apps and different because IMG works under the administration, concentrating on making applications for removing old processes involving a lot of paperwork (like the placement process for the Placement Office), making them smooth whereas SDSlabs has a little more freedom to concentrate on anything of their choice, in particular the lives of students of IIT Roorkee.Because of the nature of the work that we do and the similarity in it, there might be a perception among people of a rivalry. However, I can assure you that there is no such thing, at least among the members of IMG and SDSlabs. Both IMG and SDSlabs provide a great working environment and chance for its members to develop into top coders and designers. I would say it's a very difficult choice between the two. If you are good enough, if you have a desire in your to learn new things, you would do well irrespective of the group, or even without IMG or SDSlabs. It's more like FIFA/PES, Prince of Persia/Assassin's Creed- you gotta choose one and there is no wrong choice.Update (from comments):The LUG (Linux User Group) chapter at IIT Roorkee is maintained jointly by IMG and SDSLabs. Last year, we had a talk on the same by members of both the groups.EDIT-Seven months after I wrote it, Shashank's answer raises some points about IMG which I think I should clear.Disclaimer- I admire the work done my SDSLabs, but I believe people in IMG are working equally hard, if not more. What I am writing below this line are my personal views, in no way endorsed by IMG.New Channel IAlso, the new channeli design was under development for 3 years before its launch. To understand this, you need to know how we started off. The old version was created almost a decade ago (in Java/Struts which seemed to the best at that time). As the requirements went higher, we started developing standalone apps (like Faculty Appraisal and Placement Online). There came a time when we needed to unify them into one. That is when the idea of Channel I popped up.The idea started in 2011 when Vivek Prakash and Aniket Mittal (both in CSI 3rd year at that time) were assigned the duty to select the technology for the new portal. They chose Python/Django and a new team of 2nd years was assigned this work. The basic work for the portal started only in early 2012.I was managing the Placement Portal and we needed it in a working condition by July 2012, which is why we launched it first. ThinkTank was launched soon thereafter. However, the new management team wanted a better design, the work for which started in Autumn 2012. There were many other applications to be ported (like Faulty Appraisal and LecTut) to use the new unified login system of Django. All of that work was completed in about six months, and the new portal was launched in February 2013.The new Channel i was not just a redesign. It consists of a number of applications that users don't notice because that the entire aim - to integrate all the applications seamlessly. Many such applications are home feed, events, help centre, user settings, groups. These mini applications that stitch the whole intranet together are in addition to the 15 standalone apps already running. The redesign of Channel i took time because the entire portal was rethought inside out. When we design Channel i, the challenge was much bigger than just choosing the colors or deciding on a flat or skeuomorphic design style. It had to be designed keeping in mind our future plans and what we plan to do with the portal.Yaadein is not a new app. They make it online at the end of every academic calendar.Thinktank is also an old app.ThinkTank (Autumn 2012), Yaadein (Spring 2013)-You can argue that these apps were there from time immemorial, but porting them into Python/Django was not a task. Rome was not built in a day- neither were ThinkTank or Yaadein. They were completely revamped with a new design and new features. We launched each of them separately as we wanted to make sure they get the recognition the hard work of our members deserved.Yes, we make Yaadein online every year, but we make sure we add new features. If you are a developer and actively contribute to open source projects, you would know how difficult it is to port an application from one version of Django to another, or from Python 2 to Python 3. We did it from Struts to Django- you can understand how much of effort it took. The new Content Management System (October 2013)-As you might know, the institute website is managed by IMG. The website is generated as a set of static HTML pages and uploaded to the main server. The CMS is responsible for creating, updating and publishing content on the IIT Roorkee website.Over the years, the CMS was developed as a set of modules due to the requirements of the institute. As a result, maintenance was a very tedious task! Work on the new CMS started in Autumn 2012 and it was launched in Autumn 2013. Not only is it highly structured now, it also provides a lot of new features (like immediate publishing of your content or user accounts for all departments). A detailed presentation on the CMS can be found here.Content Management SystemResponse Forms and subject registration cards(November 2013)-Filling response forms for your professors was indeed a monotonous and tedious task- what we did was get it online- and save your time. For one thing, you don't have to fill the same information on multiple pages. On filling the response forms, a subject registration card is generated which you need to show during the end semester examinations.Although you might think that making this was pretty simple (the students can see just a form!), it had a lot of analytics that is visible only to the professors, HODs deans and the administration.Academic Registration (January 2014)-Remember the print out of the six cards every semester and getting them signed and deposited to various dump sites across the institute? Well, the students coming in next year would never know about it because we got the whole system online. All you need to do is to reach your departmental office on the day of the registration and sign on the register- everything else is the headache of your department.Connect-e-Dil(February 2014)-A new valentine app in the campus where you can send roses and messages to others. Has become very popular with the users.More apps and activities-Placement Online (June 2012)- One of the most used apps on campus- the final year and pre-final year students know the importance.Faculty Appraisal/FacApp (February 2013)- Only visible to the faculty.Buy Sell (August 2013)- The eBazaar of IIT Roorkee.Download Softwares (August 2013)Scholarship Forms- We have removed paperwork with the introduction of all such forms (like MCM) online.Active Sessions (October 2013)- Did you even leave your account open from the CC by mistake? With active sessions, you can monitor your logged in sessions and remotely log out of other devices. There have been a lot of GSoCs from IMG (right from the days of Akshay Bharadwaj and Pradeep Kumar Gayam), but we have done well as a team too. Recently, a team from IMG won the hackathon Syntax Error organized by SDSLabs, in association with GitHub and Google. Team Cyberlords of IMG stole the first round of Microsoft Hackcon 2014.I cannot be sure of why the people who chose SDSLabs chose so but I can talk about myself. I did not appear for IMG test. Why? Simple. IMG projects are all institute projects. I don't want to be dictated on what I should work on when I'm in college. I love my freedom. As for freedom, an IMGian is always free to come up with an idea and start working on it. These apps were made not because the administration asked us to but we chose to build them. In my first year, I handpicked my project. Later, I started working on Placement Online because I asked for it- I wanted to make something that people use- and fixing their issues (no matter how trivial or funny) makes me happy. For instance, we never took the responses or the registration process online because someone asked us to- it was our own initiative- we thought it would remove redundancy from the lives of people. Our lab, is not just a work place for us. It is open 24x7 and we live here. Literally.Oh, and I wouldn't point you to our Facebook page- you probably like it already if you know about us and admire our work.
