First of all, getting into Stanford isn't necessarily the question you should ask. The real question is "what can a Stanford degree do for you?" Of the people I've talked to who have been admitted, are going, or are alumni from Stanford, all have interests and passions that extend beyond college, from becoming a psychiatrist to volunteering in the Peace Corps to working on political campaigns, and each attributed Stanford as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. These people, while they all had different goals and different aspirations, had one (and only one) thing that tied all of them together: being active in pursuing their goals. That one line is probably the most important thing to keep in mind as you work your way through high school. That being said, there are some other key trends that the majority of these people followed.Standardized Tests: Unless you have an amazing "hook" that sets you apart from the tens of thousands of applicants elite colleges sift through, getting stellar test scores is paramount. I would advise reaching for at least a 34 ACT or a 2200 SAT, although these numbers are quite arbitrary; there are many applicants that were accepted with lower test scores and at least five times as many that were rejected with scores higher than those. These tests are there mainly for you to demonstrate that you are ready for the increased rigor of the college curriculum, and carry weight only in that having lower scores may show a lack of readiness for college.Classes: Take the highest level classes your school offers. AP, IB, Honors, dual enrollment classes for college credit, take them all. This shows that you not only find a subject interesting and are putting in more effort to learn, but that you can handle the increased workload. And make sure you study for the AP/IB tests at the end; your scores are one of the few truly objective ways Stanford, or any college for that matter, can evaluate its applicants. And don't worry if your school in the middle of nowhere Missouri doesn't offer as many classes as a New York magnet school, it's all about taking advantage of the opportunities available to you, something that is different for everyone.Grades: This is something that I cannot stress enough: grades should, at least in high school, always come first. At a state college, good grades and test scores can make up for sub-par essays, but a good essay cannot make up for sub-par grades. This becomes even more critical as college becomes more selective. This year, 97% of the class of 2019 were in the top 10% of their class (Our Selection Process), and most of the remaining 3% either went to prestigious ivy league feeder schools, or top tier magnet schools. Graduating at the top of your class isn't something to set you apart, it's something that's almost expected.Extracurricular Activities and Honors: This is where things get a little more subjective. As mentioned in the opening paragraph, all the people I know from Stanford were extremely active in high school. This can mean competing in a sport at the national level, participating in the IMO, IOI, etc., starting a nonprofit, or a myriad of other things. Play to your strengths. If you love chemistry, ask your Chem teacher to sign you up for the Chemistry Olympiad exam, start a Titration team, participate in Chemistry events in your school's Science Olympiad team, help tutor kids struggling in class. Do anything you can to help explore your passions and expand your horizons.Application: You've taken the SAT twice, you've sat in on 7 AP tests, and you're finally ready to write your college essays. What should you write about? Well that depends on what your passions and goals are. Want to work in the medical industry to invent new devices to help ease respiratory problems in order to honor your ailing grandpa? Want to change education policy so that every child can have the opportunities afforded to you? Have a love of 70's music? Well then you should write about it! Your essays should reflect who you are as a person, what passions you have, a quintessential monologue of your past, present, and future, split up into 50-600 word chunks. This is probably the most critical part of your application, so make every word count!If you fit the bill for each one of these criteria (plus amazing teacher recommendations) you have a shot of getting into Stanford! However, it's important to remember that there is never a guarantee. Stanford, as well as ivy league schools, elite LACs, and other prestigious universities, takes in tens of thousands of applications from highly qualified applicants, many more than they can offer places to.
