PDF Editor FAQ

Realistically, how far can a great ACT score (33-36) carry you past an average GPA?

Good enough to get you a possible scholarship at U Alabama or ASU and U of Arizona… if ranked North of 80 nationally on the US News and a world ranking, but it’s doubtful you’ll get a sniff at any of the top 50 school since they want very high gpas first and foremostIf this helps, my two oldest kids had a 3.7 weighted/4.0 gpa and one had 1560 sat and one 1450 (in this range you listed). They also had elite extracurrulars which didn’t help them for elite schools due to there grades not being competitive with the top students also applying and it makes sense when you think about. It didn’t really matter one was a national merit fianislt and one national champion in his sport with amazing essays and activities etc. Top colleges want the top students and that means grades at or near their incredibly high standards as it should be. They can take a straight A student with similar activities at the ivys etcBelow for reference is breakdown of what happened with them and why college admissions is so competitive for the top 50 in this era of really high tests schools and having 5 -10 students in a normal high school class or with about 40,000 public and private USA high schools nearly 400,000 all A kids (that is who gets in generally)Thus for my kids here is the results :schools ranked top 20: 0/25 schools accepted themschools ranked top 30: 1/30schools accepted them (NYU and told him only if he switched from computer science to general studies.schools ranked top 50: 2/35schools accepted them. One choose Davis from this list and kids to this day say how in the heck did you ever get in with your gpa (almost everyone there had much higher gpa who weren’t special admits)schools ranked top 70. 4/40 accepted them including UC Santa Cruz and Bayler. This group got a bit easierschools ranked 75–150. all of the schools accepted them (and extra 7) and one had a full scholarship offer to U Alabama, U Oklahoma, U Baylor and U Texas Dallas. Half rides to asu and U of A. Not one rejection. See the trend.Beat the 75th percentile for grades and gpa and most likely (not always) you get in with great activities. Below and you get rejected but for two schools and this is with a national title and national merit award winner and only two top 50 took a chance and offered. They don’t need to take a chance on kids with mediocre grades in the top 50 overall and few didthe key point is the top 50 has so many kids with 3.9/4.0 and 34–36 act (1500–1570 SAT for kids who are special admits (eg Athletes; American Indian, first time family college graduate in family or non English speaking at home) that rarely do they offer admittance to anyone below even a 3.75 gpa/4 and a 1500. It happens but rarelyapply to say five schools top 50; 7 top 100 and 5 that you are interested in that aren’t ranked. Having choices will make your decision of some incredible college choices that much easier. Don’t make the mistake my oldest of having one school, UC Santa Cruz, accepting him and being so dejected that he almost didn’t get readmitted after doing poorly in community college . He barely made it due to this and my goal is to help kids so this never happens to others. Be proud of where you get in and every school is difficult so enjoy
