Is Cisco iOS Linux based?
Sort of…in summary, traditional IOS predates Linux, and ran on M68K CPUs in the mid 80s. These versions do not run on Linux, they were “bare metal”. But, as time has moved on, the latest evolutions of IOS do run on Linux.Traditional Cisco IOS itself is definitely not Linux based. It is a monolithic operating system. It is completely memory resident. Everything runs in a single context and multitasking is cooperative. It is also single threaded and interrupt driven.This means that it can run on very simple CPUs and it is very efficient. It manages the custom silicon very well, and handles any exceptions effectively.It also means that is is not particularly scalable, and CPUs are scaling out with more cores rather than scaling up with a single fast core. Cisco also needed to implement features beyond forwarding packets. Features that had to run in software; they can’t implement everything in an ASIC. They also needed it to be able to adapt to a “software defined networking” world.To address this, Cisco released IOS-XE. This OS is completely Linux based. It runs the Linux kernel, and loads userspace by loop back mounting package files (these are in ISO format internally in versions I have analysed). The kernel has custom modules for Cisco custom ASICS. IOS itself is included. It was stripped of all hardware drivers and instead given a single platform driver for the Linux kernel. It was also stripped of other services that could be run separately, such as SNMP etc. So now IOS runs in userspace as “IOSd”. It is tighter. File systems that contain the OS still don’t mount read/write, so unlike other similar systems, it doesn’t risk FS corruption and being unable to boot if it doesn’t get cleanly shut down. Services can be restarted if they die. It is a good stable operating system.There is also IOS-XR. This is a complete rewrite. The CLI is similar, but it has completely different APIs and it is not the same. It used to run on QNX (a micro kernel Unix), but it has recently switched to Linux as well.Then there is Cisco AireOS, Meraki, CIMC, NX-OS etc that have always been Linux based. And CUMC etc that moved to Linux quite some time ago.Traditinal IOS is going End-Of-Life. Cisco has invested heavily in Linux.Cisco is not alone amongst enterprise vendors here. Linux has a great code base, excellent community support, and well understood and stable project management across core projects (such as Linus and the kernel etc). CPU core power is no longer much of a constraint, nor is RAM. Because of this, Linux makes sense. Even JunOS is moving from BSD to Linux. Mellanox is Linux based across all of its supported operating systems, including Microsoft SONiC (yeah, a Linux distribution from Microsoft).
