I found out my husband was cheating on me by turning on the baby monitor’s receiving end, in my bedroom. He was in the basement and on a cordless phone talking to his then girlfriend about how I wanted to have another baby and he wasn’t interested and wanted to be with her instead. I had forgotten to turn the baby monitor on in my son’s bedroom and was clearly picking up his cordless phone on my end of the baby monitor. I confronted him, he freaked out and lied lied lied. Yada yada yada, we separated and divorced shortly after.

I went to a hydroponics store just outside of Boulder CO in the late ’90s.The rumors were that the police occasionally staked out the store, wrote down license plates numbers, and would follow up with the address of those cars at a later date. I thought that was ridiculous, but Boulder was full of paranoid people. The sharpest among you know why they wanted to follow-up later - they assumed each of these store-goers was buying hydroponic supplies to boost their marijuana production from their home grow-room. This was a booming business in Boulder, but occasionally the police needed a bust to look like they were doing their job. They thought I was going to be that bust.It was a Saturday afternoon, probably about 2 p.m. I was watching TV with my roommate while my girlfriend took a nap in our bedroom. A sharp knock at the door startled us, and I went to get it. Two cops were there, polite as can be, telling me they are responding to a 911 hangup.What?A 911 hangup requires a follow-up, with a check of the premises.What? No one called 911.Cordless phones sometimes make the calls on their own, but we still need to check.What?We need to check your house to make sure no one is in distress. Every room. Now.OK.So I show them into the house, show them my girlfriend Vicky asleep in the bedroom, and then show the other five or so rooms in the house, including the kitchen.Yup, the kitchen. A south-facing kitchen with a wide panoramic window. And, a small garden growing lettuce, peppers, and spices in a hydroponic flow-through or nutrient film system. Nice blooms, healthy leaves, and sweet smells.But, no single illegal plant anywhere in the house. Never grown the stuff, never will.It took me six months to realize we had been illegally searched. We didn’t own a cordless phone. We hadn’t used the phone in hours. A subsequent check of our phone record showed that indeed there had been no phone activity that day.These bozos tracked me from the hydroponic store to my house four months after the visit, expecting to get a pot bust. They picked the ONLY house in Boulder using hydroponics 100% legally.******** edit in response to comments *******I neither invited the two police officers in nor explicitly told them I was not consenting to their search. I did not impede their entry to the house. Whether a judge would say I consented would be a judgement call that I would lose most places, but maybe not Boulder.I now know that I should have explicitly said “I do not consent to your search, but I am not in any way impeding or resisting you. If you enter, I will follow you closely to observe your wrongful search.” I would not call it an illegal search to their faces at the time, as I don’t want to escalate then, but I would explicitly use a word that clearly means I am not consenting to the search. And now, in 2020, I would video the whole thing.
