What are the views of Anurag Bhatia on Dr Raghuram Rajan announcement of his intention to go back to academic at the end of his current assignment?

It's a sad event. Like most sensible Indians, I'm a big fan of Dr Raghuram Rajan. However, there's no need to panic. I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed reading status updates of people screaming that without Dr Rajan, the economy is going to the dogs, inflation will skyrocket and our banking system, plagued with elevated levels of bad loans, will collapse. Most people think that the RBI is a one man show, that's not true at all.During his tenure:He diluted the power of the Governor’s chair. Dr Rajan has asked for the creation of a monetary policy committee[1]mandated with the task of guiding interest rates in the economy. It will consist of the six members, three nominated by the RBI and three by an external selection committee. In cast of a tie, the governor will have a casting vote. The monetary policy committee framework will replace the current system where the RBI governor and his internal team have complete control over monetary policy decisions. While a technical advisory committee advises the RBI on monetary policy decisions, the central bank is under no obligation to accept its recommendations. Setting up a monetary policy committee is a standard practice for most of the worlds prominent central banks. He has set up a straight line path to inflation which his successor is highly unlikely to change. Dr Rajan's inflation target of 5% has been difficult to achieve because of rising crude prices and sharp rise of primary food items[2]. If we have a bad monsoon this year, inflation will rise further. I think it's unlikely that the successor will change the inflation target set by Dr Rajan.Who should be the next RBI Governor? My vote goes to SBI boss Arundhati Bhattacharya.World Bank Chief Economist Kaushik Basu would be another great contender because I'm not sure how much macroeconomic experience Arundhati Bhattacharya has; her immense experience is in retail and investment banking.Footnotes[1] Union budget 2016-17: government announces monetary policy committee[2] RBI leaves retail inflation target at 5% with upward bias

Why did the Democratic House leadership block Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from one of the two last seats on the Energy and Commerce Committee?

It’s a little worse than even “Democratic House leadership,” a term that would most of the time refer to the small group of officials elected by their peers to run the chamber: the Speaker, Leader, Whip, Assistant Speaker, and Caucus Chairman.Rather, it was a vote of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. And it was a 46–13 vote against Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and in favor of her New York colleague, Rep. Kathleen Rice.Reporting is a bit mixed here because internal House Democratic Caucus politics are more than a little inside baseball. But a few factors likely come into play.Seniority. Rep. Rice was first elected to the House in 2014, so she’ll be in her 4th House term in January. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, however, was first elected in 2018, so she’ll be a House sophomore. Seniority counts for something with Members!Campaigning. According to Axios:I'm told Ocasio-Cortez lost the vote by the House Democratic Steering Committee because she didn't personally ask for enough votes, and because some members fear she'll support a primary against them from the left.Rice worked the committee, tightly controlled by Speaker Pelosi, and was showered with seconding speeches. One member told me Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez "doesn't have enough relationships. She needs to learn from this."Conscious of AOC's power with progressives and online, the member said: "The vote would have been very different if it wasn't secret."(AOC loses secret ballot for a seat on powerful House committee)Leadership influence. An interesting nugget from The Hill’s reporting suggests that Speaker Pelosi may have had to decide on the lesser of two evils between these two Members.…Both lawmakers have at times been at odds with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), with Pelosi previously blocking Rice from getting a position on the Judiciary Committee after the New York lawmaker opted not to support Pelosi for Speaker in 2019 and played a role in an attempt to oust Pelosi from her leadership role two years ago…(Rice selected over Ocasio-Cortez for spot on Energy & Commerce panel)Rep. Ocasio-Cortez will likely remain on the Financial Services and Oversight and Government Reform Committees during the next Congress.

What are the biggest myths about Israel’s security policy?

That Israel deliberately targets innocent children. That Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians. That “If only Israel would withdraw to the 1967 lines, there would be peace”.That Israel expelled 750,000 Arabs of Palestine after May 14, 1948. (More than half of the “Palestinian refugees” left before that date at the behest of Arab governments and the Arab Higher Committee for Palestine.)
