Ultimately this might have been a better solution. As you may know when the Skylab station was launched the aerodynamic fairing covering the station broke loose during the maximum dynamic pressure. As it tore away it snagged on the two main solar arrays tearing one away completely and jamming the other wing so it could not deploy automatically when the station reached orbit. It also tore away the solar heat shield causing the space station to become dangerously hot inside. Astronauts from the first mission had to deploy a new temporary heat shield and unjam the remaining main solar array during several space walks before they could occupy the station. The second manned crew preformed additional space walks placing another additional heat shield in place as the one deployed by the first crew turned out to be only partially effective.If the station had been launched in three separate pieces it is highly likely the aerodynamic fairing on the smaller vehicles would have operated correctly as it had been studied and engineered for a long time before the plan was changed to an “all up” launch on a Saturn V vehicle.
