How can I prepare for the SSC CGL Exam in 3 months?

I have cleared SSC CGLE 2017 with 577.25/700 marks. My All India Rank is 225 and I have been selected as Inspector(Examiner) in Customs(CBIC). This is my first SSC CGL attempt and I had been a working professional all along my preparation.PC:GoogleAfter deciding in May-2017 that I should give SSC CGL 2017, I realized that it was my first attempt and I had less than 3 months before I gave Tier 1 of SSC CGL 2017(My Tier 1 exam was on August 20,2017). Being a working professional, I did not have much time to join a coaching Institute. So, I decided to prepare on my own. Here is how I cracked CGL while working at a 9.30 to 5.30 job.My strategy has been· Choose the right books/materials - There is no single book/course offered by any coaching center to crack the exam. Any standard reference book/course that lets you understand the basics is a good one.· You are the best judge of your capabilities. So, make your own notes and make your own plan. Do not completely rely on the books/materials provided by the coaching centers, instead personalize them to your liking. Make your own notes of each topic from any source but do not go for multiple sources for any single topic as repetition will waste your precious time and in the process confuses you.· Your performance does not depend on the number of hours you study - It just depends on the topics/syllabus you have completed, strategies learned and how well you are able to approach the problems.· NCERT textbooks of class 6 to class 10 are a must read - If you are weak at the conceptual level, there is no point in completing any amount of syllabus. If there is a time constraint, atleast complete NCERT mathematics textbooks.· Revising whatever you have learned - Multiple revisions will strengthen your dot connecting capacity and help you in solving multi-conceptual problems in the exam. Do not waste time in reading from multiple sources, instead revise the same material multiple times.· Mocks, Mocks and more Mocks - This is the secret to getting a job through SSC CGL. The amount of mocks given is directly proportional to the score you get. Solve as many problems as you can get.· Analyzing your performance in mock tests - Analyzing the mocks and reworking on your weaker sections is a must for improvement. Otherwise there is no point in giving mocks. Knowing your rank after giving mock tests is good as you will know your position but don't get depressed, if you have low scores.· If you a working professional, proper time management with increased efficiency is the key. Also, never go for conventional sources suggested by coaching institutes since working people have severe time constraints, instead choose unconventional but standard books which you are already aware of/in touch with.My Background in Maths and English:· B.TECH(Hons.) in Electronics and Communication Engineering from SASTRA University.· Before I started my SSC CGL preparation,- I have completed all the topics in the book Quantitative Aptitude by R.S.Aggarwal, while preparing for aptitude tests during campus placements and during GATE preparation.- I used to solve logical and quantitative questions on a mobile application as a hobby.- Prepared from Higher Engineering Mathematics by R.S.Grewal book, for PGDBA exam conducted by IIM Calcutta and cleared the written test whose syllabus contains Quantitative Aptitude, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Logical reasoning and Verbal ability.- I had read more than 60(fiction and Non-fiction) books. So, my english skills had been above average.Strategy for Tier - 1:After I decided to give SSC CGL-2017 in May-2017, I had around 3 months time for preparation(My tier 1 was held on August 20,2017). Apart from spending 6 hours for preparation daily on working days and 12-14 hours on holidays/weekends, I have also utilised office breaks, travelling times etc for preparation.Apart from NCERTs and newspapers, I have chosen only one standard book/online course for each section so that I won't be wasting time on repetitive topics.a) I started with reasoning : I revised all the topics in R.S.Aggarwal's quantitative aptitude book with the help of solved examples given in the book. Also solved about 10 to 20 randomly picked problems from the exercises given at the end of each chapter. If you are working and can spend 6 hours for preparation daily, it won't take more than a week to understand all the topics from this book.b) Then moved to Quantitative Aptitude section: NCERT textbooks are a must to understand/brush up the basics. So, I have completed 6th to 10th NCERT books. I have made the notes for some topics from Bharat Gupta's Radix education Youtube videos and few other Youtube channels. NCERT Maths textbooks took up almost one week time and it took one more week for making my own notes from the Youtube videos.c) Then, took up English: I have completed about 3/4th part of Word Power Made Easy book in 2 weeks time which included exercises at the end of each chapter. I did not complete the whole book as it was taking too much time.d) and ended with General Awareness: I started reading The Hindu newspaper daily. Science and Social Sciences NCERT texbooks of class 6 to class 10 for Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, History and basics of Polity and economy. This took 2 weeks' time. Then I started reading Pratiyogita Darpan monthly magazines. As I had less time I went with fast reading and was able to complete 8 magazines in 2 weeks' time. Then I did a few exercises in Lucent GK book.e) Finally gave mock tests and practiced previous papers: I have practised past 3 years' question papers. Then started giving mock test series on Mockbank & Testbook. I used to score around 120-130 in mockbank test series and around 140-160 in Testbook test series. I have attempted around 50 tests with an average of 140 score. This took me 15-20 days as I attempted around 3 test per day, analyzed the wrong answers, and revised those topics. My tier-1 score stood at 151.5 marks out of 200.Strategy for Tier - 2:For Maths: Since I liked Mr. Bharat Gupta's Radix education youtube videos while preparing for Tier 1, I went ahead and bought a pen drive course for Maths which covers about 15 topics with 5-15 hour lectures and 100-150 questions on each topic. As exam got delayed, I have revised the course twice by the time I was in exam hall. I was also able to read NCERT Mathematics textbooks from Class 6 to Class 12 and Quantitative aptitude by R.S.Aggarwal again due to the additional time the delay has given. For English: I got a written notes from a friend who was taking coaching at Everest Coaching Point in Hyderabad. The notes covered Grammar and Comprehension. For others, I planned to stick with Word Power Made Easy. This time I read the whole book again from cover to cover. But, as the exam got delayed twice, I bought English course from Radix education and completed it.Finally gave mock Tests: After completing Radix online course for maths and written notes for english, I started giving mock tests. I have given paid mocktests of Gradeup, Testbook and TopRankers and free mock tests from wherever I could find. Combined I have given 60-70 mock tests for maths and 40-50 for english. After Tier 2, my score stood at 509.25(Tier 1 + Tier 2) marks out of 600 with 173.5 in Tier 2 Maths and 183.75 in Tier 2 English.Strategy for Tier - 3:As soon as the key got released, I started writing essays.I took a current affairs topic/government scheme/general topic, read about it online, wrote an essay on it in a stipulated time and getting it verified by a friend or by myself. I wrote about 50 essays like this among which the one I got in the final exam i.e. demonetization was also one.For letter writing, I searched online for different types of letters and practiced it myself. Much effort is not needed here as we only need to remember different formats used in different kinds of letters.I made some one or two factual errors in the essay but overall my tier 3 performance was satisfactory. I got 68 marks in tier 3 which made my total marks 577.25 out of 700.Tier 4 is of qualifying in nature. There was a typing test, Excel and Powerpoint slide preparation which can be cleared with just a few days practice if you have ever used a desktop. No need of any special preparation for this as far as my experience is considered.I would like to advice the aspirants to have patience, since it may take years before you land up in your dream job. There will be delays in the exam, wrong answers keys, revision in answer keys or even results, re-examinations, court cases, NDOH's, UFM disqualifications and what not. You never know what is going to happen until the exam gets completed and the final results are out. So, keep your spirits high and keep working in silence till the very end.Good Luck!!
