PDF Editor FAQ

In your opinion, who were the top 5 WW2 commanders? Why?

I rarely answer these, because you always stir up a poo-poo storm, so fair warning I’ll disable comments. I will also refer you to a website where thirty odd historians, authors and veterans (including Dusty Kleiss, the guy who hit two carriers at Midway with his Dauntless) to name the most overrated and underrated commanders in the Pacific Theater. My 5.William “Bill”” Slim. Accomplished the impossible with nothing. If no one else wanted a weapon, or plane, Slim got it, and was happy for it. He ran the largest Army, (of which only about 13% of which were ethnically British) to be supplied entirely by air He tied up 60% of all,IJA ground forces, making them unavailable elsewhere.Read his book!George C. Marshall and Dwight D. Eisenhower for the same reason. Marshall did battle with the idiots in Congress, day in and day out, to try to make sure his troops got the funding and strategy approvals at the Presidential level as well. He was a consummate negotiator, but knew how to play hardball. Eisenhower had a similar, and in some ways more difficukt problem. Monumental egos. How he kept that group of narcissistic lunatics together long enough to win a war is beyond my feeble ability to comprehend. And I don’t just mean Monty and Patton. Churchill, FDR, DeGaulle, Mark Lucas…it fatigues me to even think about them. And he never shirked responsibility, even when it wasn’t his. The note before D-Day taking full responsibility if D-Day failed. After the disaster of Market-Garden, a reporter asked him if he approved of the.mission, a perfect opportunity to subtly torpedo Montgomery. His answer “I not only approved it, I insisted on it.” Even years later, in his memoir about the war, he never throws anyone under the bus. There is one sure way to judge a leader. In a good leader All references to, explanations for failure. Start withe the word “I”. “I should have pushed harder on the right flank. I should have known it was a trap. I should have opened fire at 18,000 yards.Bad leaders, in the same circumstances, begin their stories with”We”, or worse “You”We should have opened fire at 18,000 yards. We should have known it was a trap. You should have pushed harder on the right flank.Check out Ike.Chester NimitzIt is unlikely you will find a copy of this, as it wasn’t even written by Nimitz, but by a newspaper reporter from Hawaii, and was complied into newspaper article via telephone interviews and exchanging letters! I take notes on every book I read, and write summaries and reviews on some. Her’s. What I wrote about this booklet written by one William H. Ewing[1][1][1][1][2][2][2][2]That sumnary is below block quoted to avoid the Quora rule about “self-plagiarism” whatever that is.It was written as newspaper article by William H. Ewing, an editor and writer for The Honolulu Star-Bulletin. On the occasion of Admiral Nimitz 80th birthday Ewing asked Nimitz to look back, and, with the benefit of hindsight, talk yet again of Pearl Harbor, on the fateful day, December 7, 1941. Ewing composed the article (unbelievably, it seems today), primarily via an exchange of letters, with an occasional telephone call to clarify certain points. The article was published February 15, 1965, in the Star-Bulletin, and in 1971, was reprinted in booklet form in 1971, a copy of which I own. In the booklet, Nimitz repeats some of his statements made immediately after the attack, and in the intervening years, had thought through what other things could have gone worse for the US, which I will try to summarize here. But first, some photos. Here we see a Japanese chart of the Harbor, with Ford Island clearly identified in the center. Here is a US aerial photograph of the Harbor, taken October 30, 1941. Ships moored in the Harbor are most likely destroyers. This is a Japanese photo taken in the early minutes of the attack, picturing battleship row. Note the ripples in the water, the shock waves emanating from first hits on West Virginia and Oklahoma. Also note the red arrow I have drawn, showing a “rooster tail” wake, thought at the time to be one of the special shallow running torpedoes. Recent speculation though, is that this is actually a Japanese miniature submarine that entered the Harbor, and is “ porpoising” in an attempt to stay submerged so as not to be seen, but stay close enough to the surface to be able to aim its own torpedoes. Now we come to Nimitz’s belief on Japanese mistakes, the same as the ones he mentioned in December 1941, them we will cover his additional thoughts since then. Fitst, the Japanese neglected to destroy all the drydock and repair facilities. Had those been destroyed, instead of refloating the sunken ships, and moving them via tugboat a few hundred yard to a drydock, they would have needed to be towed all the way back to the West Coast, which would require larger ships to tow, and ships for escort, further depleting our scant resources in the eastern Pacific.Second, there were 4.5 million barrels of fuel oil in above ground tanks, waiting to be transferred to underground facilities then under construction. Mere strafing runs with API or even tracer rounds would have been sufficient to ignite a conflagration. The US had a substantial shortfall in fleet oilers as it was. More than likely, the fleet, or most of it, would have had to redeploy, back to the US west coast.Third, they attacked on a Sunday, when most of the personnel had liberty, or were attendinh worship services. This left the ships lightl manned. Had the attack come on a weekday, the casualties could have been ten times what we suffered. This comes into play later. In addition to the original 3, Nimitz gave Ewing some other areas where fortune favored the US.First, the Japanese completely ignored our submarines, subtenders, and maintenance facilities. This allowed the submarines to put to sea almost immediately and begin to stalk Japanese ships. By War’s end, the US submarine fleet sank 4.8 million tons, or 75% of all Japanese merchant marine capability.Second, the fleet was all in port. Had there had been ships at sea, say even all the battleships and escorts, Kimmel would have felt compelled to attempt to engage the Japanese. Withe the Japanese having 6 carriers, and Kimmel with zero air support, and the Japanese had a fleet cruising speed of 22 knots, Kimmel’s fleet, “wide open” could only manage 18 knots. That meant the Japanese could have dictated the where and when of the battle, and the bulk of Kimmel’s fleet would be sunk, with all hands, pushing KIA to 30,000 or more. Not only that, but the ships would have been sunk in deep water, not a shallow harbor, and thus would be unsalvageable. Alternatively, the attack is not a complete success, some battleships and others remain fighting fit, and leave in an attempt to catch and engage the Japanese fleet, with the same result as stated above.Sadly, I can not offer a link to a free version of this, the copyright is still in effect. All photos however are already in the public domain. Oddly, many articles on the web say “Reflections on Pearl Harbor” BY Chester W. Nimitz, when in fact the article now booklet was BY William H. Ewing. Can’t trust anything you read on the internet these days!”Anyone who says Nimitz isn’t one of the best Naval Commander in history needs to stop buying that cheap vodka and move a up a notch (or ten). I won’t go into the reasons, because if they aren’t immediately apparent, you should not only switch vodka brands, but also, do not pick WW2 as a field of stuffy. And 5 is a tough one because it means leaving some incredibly good officers of the list. But I select Hugh Dowding who like the others had to pick his way through the minefields in the halls of power but because of soething else he did. Everyone thinks I will add .”RDF”, or Radar to his list of reasons he should be included. It is not.Everybody had radar. What Dowding did was FAR more important. He created this vast command and control network. Chain home for higher flying targets, and Chain home low home low to catch craft trying to a slip underneath the other radar. But that wasn’t why either. After targets made landfall, he had a vast network in the observer corps, who using some simple instruments and a stop watch, could estimate how many planes, what kind, altitude, course, speed , and local weatherBut impressive as that, so impressive he might have made my top 5 based only on that. What got actually got Dowding on my list was he performed magic. Right in front of you, he turned data into information.Turning hundreds, sometimes thousands of tidbits of data, into actionable information. He created the world’s first unified command and control process for managing scarce resources, pilots and planes in the the most efficient way. Without it the skies would have resembled a soccer ( football ) game between teams composed entirely of 4 years olds. The ball is at midfield. Every single kid runs for midfield. Somehow someone kicks the ball, so now the ball is 30 feet from midfield near the sideline. Every single kid runs full speed to the new location.Every single parent who has a child who has played pee-wee, ot pre-junior or some other ridiculous name has had to ask themselves this question at some point, usually about halfway through the game.“Should I just kill myself, right now, so I don’t have to watch one more second of my child sitting on the ground making whistles from blades of grass? Or do I discretely make my way to the showers and hang myself with my tie?”Put a couple of hundred testosterone filled WW2 fighter jocks in the ar, maybe on the ground in 20 minute ready queue and over the wireless comes “50 plus bearing to intercept 125, range, 90 miles, course 155, speed 215.And every pilot with half a chance would be off. What Dowding did, without the aid of a computer, was drew up a very sophisticated ideal process flow, then hired people with the applicable skill sets for each job. What he did lives on in AWACS, JSTAR, CIC’a in every ship with Radar. And finally, well, almost. Eisenhower and Marshall count as one since they are mentioned together. You can’t have a list of top commanders and leave of Marshall Zhukov, if you wonder why, watchOr read just the 10 pages about him here? You will notice that Monty and Patton are missing. You can’t call men, or officers who are supposed to at least act like men, but instead act like squabbling schoolchildren great commanders. You just can’t. Sorry. Finally our experts.Refighting the Pacific WarGo to the “surveying the Experts section. Oddly, I agree with most.Footnotes[1] nimitz on Pearl Harbor[1] nimitz on Pearl Harbor[1] nimitz on Pearl Harbor[1] nimitz on Pearl Harbor[2] William H. Ewing[2] William H. Ewing[2] William H. Would it be in the best interests of the European Union to work together toward an military defensive alliance in order to break up from NATO and be independent from U.S. foreign policies?

Would it be in the best interests of the European Union to work together toward an military defensive alliance in order to break up from NATO and be independent from U.S. foreign policies?Okay. A2A to answer my own question ! :)Preface : Sorry for the typos, I’ll correct later, I’m tired !First, the story of my country with NATO.France, is one of the founding members of NATO(1949.) At the time, a genuine need of protection from a possible military advance of the Soviet Block on Western Europe made it opportune for the creation of such an alliance , between Western Europe countries and our Freeing superpower, the U.S . They saw very quickly all the benefits that this European buffer zone would represent to avoid a direct confrontation with communism. In 1966, Charles de Gaulle, back in power since 1958, was leading a more balanced diplomacy than its predecessors toward the East (ex : France recognizing communist China in 1964). Also toward the Arab world (by letting down our traditionnal Israeli ally). CDG felt that France commitment to NATO was too strong for our own interets, that our diplomacy had to be more balanced, and decided to remove France from NATO command, while remaining a second rate member in the Alliance, and asked Americans to vacate the premisces. In 1967, American troops left France. That diplomatic line was retained until 1999 , until my country, at the time weakly led by Jacques Chirac (he was in cohabitation with Lionel Jospin, his political opponent. The man was never sure if he was a conservative or a leftist, Europeanist or a “ThirdWorld-ist”. He had the same kind of uncertainty about being a Gaullist or an Atlantist) felt the need to show its allegiance again the pressing U.S.A to not end up on the official wrong side of history . Tosome extent bought himself the propaganda, genuinely fearing the Serbs were going to go beserk again in Kosovo after the previous Balkan Wars bloodbath .That move was de facto made by organizing the rigged conference of Rambouillet in February 1999 (Julien Philippe's answer to What is the Rambouillet Agreement? Why didn't Milosevic accept it?), the intent to give a diplomatic justification to go happily aggress Serbia and bomb its territory, infrastructures and populations one month later. Remember NATO is supposed to be a defensive alliance, and comply with U.N principles, rules, and decisions .France showed a bit of schizophrenia for a few years about it. Our military establishement globally disagreed with the move (for they were uneasy to betray an ally for reasons they already well understood at the time ; see their details here : Julien Philippe's answer to Why did the US bomb Serbia? ). Our public opinion was still uneasy about it, despite a majority having been turned against Serbs by almost a decade of Anti-Serbs propaganda in the country. Based on a real situation, but manipulated diabolically by the U.S propaganda and, internally, by the humanitarism passionnaria Bernard Henry Levy and his kind of messianic pyromen. Leading to a shitload of misinterpretations (redefinition of Genocide fears, treated as intentions, intentions as facts, facts as motives for further escalation, etc. Out of a situation that was impossible to be comprehend by most people, even among politicians. We went schizophrenic in such respect :; France was trying to some extent to hold back the American bombing frenzy by discarding the too “unrelated” targets ( yet we didn’t prevent Novi Sad to be uselessly, even toward the purposes of the intervention, Namely forcing Serbia to back down from its Kosovo province, maimed), and at the same time contributed as much as possible to the airstrikes once the targets were agreed upon . France wound up being second contributor of the wrecking effort… and ofc, at the time already, the holy Merciful Angels we sent to make Serbia pay a bricks, ‘blood and bones tribute for clutching on its right to exist and remain sovereign on its own territory . To “bring the Serbs to heel”, and the occupation force in Kosovo didn’t even produce the allegedly expected result (stabilization of the region, avoiding ethnic cleansing (let’s leave the “genocide” cabal appart, shall we), protection of minorities). Our new terrorist buddies from the KLA ended up attacking Macedonia 2001, and the undergound resources of the bountiful Kosovo (Yummy yummy, occupation also must be paid tribute !) It ended up confiscated de facto by the U.S with the construction of their giant military camp Bondsteel, while we were given guard of the North-West Kosovo, populated by Serbs, our former traditional ally. I sincerely hope the French soldiers at least, in that area, did an “honorable” job considering the situation. In 2003, Jacques Chirac, supported by French public opinion, and THIS TIME, having learned his lesson. To distinguish true foes from fictionnal boogymen, refused to do the same mistake again by attacking Irak (we were called traitors and cowards at the time by our American friends). Thank God he held his initial position this time, we can felicitate ourselves to not be cause for the rise of ISIS… Despite it doesn’t solve anything in this matter.Problem : In 2007, we elected a frustrated and dirty sub-Machiavelli devoured by ambition to lead our country. Nicolas Sarkozy, successor of Chirac, pure pro-American Yankee-wannabe, and whose personnality tends to feel compelled to belong to any club he can shakes powerful hands with , so that he’s “in da club”. Deluding himself in thinking he is the real deal”, made France go back de jure into the NATO integrated command in 2008. That submissive bitch-wanting-a-hug-or-even-to-be-petted-around kind of move, (totally unecessary, but commiting us deeply to US-led NATO bellicist policy) was condemned in France by a wide part of the public opinion which was basically back on it’s pre-1999 position. That “uprising” was eventually quickly swallowed, for the U.S (again them, boy !) provoked with their absurd ultra-financiarization the subprime crisis, and threw the world into a resulting economical recession and unemployment rise, which exploded the roof of the charts of the people’s discontentement list). Leaving French foreign policy under the sole care of people behind closed doors for years - Sarkozy, his foreign minister Bernard Kouchner (remember him ?), and Benard Henry Levy (remember him also ? Lybia, it was his crusade of the time.Under Sarkozy, France became the then new local spearhead of NATO, to the point of leading the undertaking of Kadafi’s regime in 2011 with the successful outcome we know ,(when NATO took over the operation, the operation was named “Unified Protector”… We see the outcome of that “protection”, boots on ground were necessary, but who cares about the aftermath for the civilians ?). We didn’t budge out of this psychorigid policy ever since, and Hollande had to pursue that renewed bellicist tradition by sending troops to Mali (I supported that one intervention, for we now have to contain in what was once Libya the mess we created in the region by overthrowing Khadafi and throwing his country into a nameless chaos, where armed tribes and fanatical islamists are going beserk on an spree of Free For All Team Deathmatches, on civilian populations we pretended to intervene to protect in the first place…Hollande, in the same fashion, felt compelled to strongly push to overthrow Bachar El Assad (who is butcher, let’s not lie about that, and I wish he was gone, but there is no one to take his place, so sadly…) to replace it with moderate people (we saw the result in Libya). Hollande was not a Yankee-wannabe like Sarkozy, but he was very impopular and always saw war, more than any of his predecessors, as a way to regain prestige (Big up to Bill Clinton , and Monica !)). And after all, it’s all about good intentions…The new French humanitarian rampaging warmonger (admire the figure of style !) couldn’t get the support of a willing U.K, neither from the désormais more careful U.S to engage into that superstunt Everbody knew that boots on the ground would be needed, and the Afghanistan and Irak experiences are quite enlightening about the “success” of such enterprises .The outcome for France of its 20 last years participation in NATO is as such :On fallacious grounds (utter exageration and partiality are both fallacies when one tries to justify the attack of a sovereign country under humanitarian purposes), delirious fears and messianic wrath instigated into public opinion, by people like Bernard Henry Levy and Bernard Kouchner, and out of diktat diplomacy, we betrayed a friendly country and loyal ally, Serbia… Contributed to the killing of thousands of its citizen, to the annexion of its province and to the explosion of the federal entity it belonged to, hence landlocking the country.NATO without France (but France remaning a part of NATO) destoyed Irak, hundreds of thousands of civilians died, and the country was left it in the hands of islamist fanatics that gave birth to ISIS later on.Sarkozy used the French military apparatus and our NATO allies to destroyed Libya, plain and simple, (Yes Kadhafi was insane to some extent but he was holding its country together and knew the boundaries not to cross, the lesser of two evils) bringing the Libyan people to its doom, and destabilized the whole West Sahara. Out of this, thousands and thousands of people died, cities were brought to ruins, even the surrounding countries lost control on wide part of their territories. Now, if Hollande did lead a coalition to overthrow Bachar El Assad to the point of effectiviteness, like we wanted to, we would be in an absolute bloody mess in Syria and I can’t even imagine how it would be there right now.About the moral legacy of it… In the 90s France was the most moderate NATO real military power, and if our concerns were listened to at the time, Serbia would probably still be whole and part of the RFY / Serbia & Montenegeo. Instead of holding our line, we ultimately chose to be the American lackey, saw the result, stepped back, but with Sarko went straight back into it at that point and France became the most bellicist country of NATO, and getting praised for that in the US Military apparatus while the White House had to curb our enthusiasm .I hope Macron will be smarter than his 3 predecessors. So, to answer the NATO part of the question, should France (and the other European countries) go out of NATO ? YES, DEFINITIVELY. Not only this alliance became a THREAT for the stability of the world and the people living in it, but it’s also a MORAL FAILURE for the French people and its ruling regimes to be an active part of it. Our moderate politicians turned into bloody warmongers without even being aware of it in less than 2 decades, and the machiavellic-messianic hybrid ideology that NATO’s military power granted us the opportunity to nurture. When you have the strength, and feel like you can use that strength at will for you are the worlds police, well, guess what, you go for it. It works in the world like it works in the playground. The thrill of power ain’t something that can contain itself when there is nothing above to contain it.Instead of truly promoting human rights, peace, and cooperation in the world, in respect for the given word and the of international law, we end up waging war everywhere around the Mediteranean, creating huge problems and provoking endless massacres of civilians, hence waging more wars to try to contain those problems because when the shit hits the fan, it usually backfires on the assholes who let the poop out. And let’s be honest, we can’t fix those problems but by sending more boots on the grounds than those we have, let’s not speak about those we can really project, and that “aftermath handling” basically involve unspoken but nevertheless real hard-neocolonialism through military occupation. And as long as we’ll side with Americans on their selfish fucked-up policies and can rely on their power to exercise what’s left of ours without facing any sizeable opposition, we’ll behave as such. So it’s time for the European countries to leave this doomed and dooming alliance who lost most of its utility when the Varsaw Parkt was disbanded almost 3 decades ago, but became a plague for many people on this planet, including ours somehow. Now the European defense projectFrance was firstly forced into this project by the U.S in 1950, which needed to rely on a strong West-European defense to lighten its burden. France then led the creation of the said Defense European Community, to finally be the one refusing to give it existence in 1953. Schizophrenia again, but at the time, that could be understood, everybody had WW2 in mind and was going cold feet allowing Western Germany to rearm.Western governements have been chatting about that idea of a European Defense ever since, without being able to relaunch such an initiative, let alone find a compromise about it. The 1970s oil crisis made the perspective more and more costy, and the American successive administrations grew to love their big toys anyway. So we kept reliying on it to face a perceived danger from the Varsaw Pakt until the fall of a USSR, and an imaginary threat ever since (except for the part of we provoke dictatures rush to get the Nuke by regularly bombing a country or another). So, a good idea or not ?In my opinion, yes!Yes ,it costs money. But hell, we produce our own money which is way too strong for most of Europeans economies (but the German one), it’s not like we truly lack of it and cannot fix that issue to sustain our strategical interests costs (creation of money to finance a growth in industry and activity can be done without generating inflation if the issue is handled carefully and step by step).Yes, it needs consensus, but hell the European Union is all about consensus, we bred a massive institutional system for that, and EU also allows multi-speed policies for interested members in a precise domain. France and Germany are already building a common military industry along with some other countries in the European Union. We should push further and think about military reenforced cooperation, ultimately integration.NATO policies do not favor us. Yes, we save some € chips by not putting ourselves to the task. In return, we have to follow U.S foreign policy more than our own, and pay the price for it (growing distrust of many countries in the world toward Western Europe, which is considered de facto as a bunch of American war-dogs in geopolitical matters. And the migrant crisis, the neighbouring terrorist threats in response of the destabilization of the Arab world, the Balkan’s current glacis and the difficulties our western alignment on Washington poses to build a politically viable (independent) Europe is on us.Many American politicians, specialists, and their military brass constantly remind us that “we can’t, we are unable to, we’ll beg for american military support at the first big problem”. That is true for now, but only because we keep it that way.France and Germany together, even without the withdrawing U.K, have the capability to lead an efficient industrial and strategic military cooperation in Western Europe. France wishes it more than Germany, but nevertheless, there are reasons to hope. I believe the waraxe is buried for good between our two countries, and that many European countries (at least in the West) would favor such a relationship, especially because both France and Germany’s weight enough for that project not to become a “French European Army” or a “German European Army”. Italy and Spain are welcome to shake their asses and gain some weight in Europe by pushing for such an initiative. And for the peoples that were betrayed by France and U.K in the wake of WW2 (We gave up our Boheme ally to hitler in Munich, then let another ally, Poland, get crushed by both the Nazis and the Soviets without supporting their immense and lonely war effort by crushing Germany on the west-flank when we had the opportunity), I understand their reluctance to trust us again and their pro-Americanism. But today’s America is not 1944 America, which was already not WW1 America anymore. European Union is a way more strong and trustable entity than the bilateral military treaties were in the 30s, for it unites us to some extent on the People level, and not only on the regimes and military apparatus level. And mainly, ofc… Strategically, a European Defense would be the right move. The U.S administrations that we see in place since 2 decades are pyromaniac firemen to the point they made us become the same. They expect us to believe we need their firemen skills… But they were the ones throwing gas on the Balkans fire and also setting the middle-east in fire in the first instance, and we French followed the exemple in West Saharian Africa. Maybe it’s time to get rid of both of problem and its innefective supposed solution, and limit our actions to fight only the islamic fanatics roaming around and protect civilian populations where there is no state anymore to do so, the whole under U.N control. We Europeans are not (merciful) angels or little girls brought into unwanted worldwide screwing against our will. But nevertheless, we know what’s best for us way more than the Americans do, and we are compelled to work for it, for our own interests, way more than the Americans are.So yes, we should clearly aim and go for a European Defensive Alliance, under a format that is yet to be determined, but with obvious principles of sole defensiveness and solidarity between European peoples under their respective and lawful sovereign countries.Addendum : France and NATOThe English language NATO arse-licking official webpage of my country. Read and laugh… Poor french diplomacy, I’m ashamed. Thanks Sladjana for asking my point of view… On my own question ! :DThanks Rigopoula Tsambou Talarantas for the HUGE amount of time you graciously spend to correct out of good heart my gibberish and my endless flow of typos. I am grateful and humbled. (But please stop spacing my comas and my dots, it drives me inssaaaaaaannnnneee !!! lolll)
