Can you deposit a cashier's check at an ATM?

NO.An ATM is a cash dispensing machine (Automated Teller Machine), it is not designed to take desposits. Some VERY old machines (and I am talking 1970s early 1980s) could take money and cheques, unfolded and with a relevant paying slip which gave you a recipt for the envelope (NB NOT THE MONEY ! ), and some operations in the UK still have an albeit up dated version of it.However in my experience (on both sides of the counter is not reliable if you do indeed need “same day value” for the either crossing of the cheque or if you actually pay-in hard cash. More so the latter I would rather wait 15 minuets for a till, manned by a real human with a Till stamp and signture on a formal paying in slip and paying in book, or an electronic copy with the branch, till number and the operator (albeit the latter be in enocded form) and the details of at least the Sorting Code of the destination of the money and may be the first of last three numbers of the account to be credited; alon with the time and “crossing date”. The latter is particularly important for cheque deposits as it marks the time that the cheque was accepted for presentation and cuts short the nonsesne about “7- 10 days” to clear a cheque.A cahsiers cheque is hardly heard of these days in the UK as it was a special cheque which was drawn on the branch (similar to a Bankers Draft) and could be made payable on demand. Equally it could be “countermanded” if there was foul play and returned accordingly.A Bankers Draft is different as it actually draw (drafted) against the bank’s Head Office , not only payable on demand but in hard cash (£ notes) - prodingin you can prove you are the person named as beneficiary/ payee of the Draft. Really it is the manual fore-runner of real-time electronic funds transfers as CHAPS and Telegraphic Transfers, SWIFT, IBAN and a couple (literally) of other specialist transfer operations, one of which is a Letter of Credit . A letter of Credit is different as it is directly linked to the services bein provided to completion and their payment by the person ordering them.In effect the money is taken out of your account and held in Trustteeship by the Bank on your behalf. Once the documentaion and tranfers of the items (usually stated in the body of the Letter of Credit, and the services, including currency) controlled by the Letter of Credit, is confirmed, usually by the Bill of Lading, Roadway Bill or Airway Bill being “signed off by the recipient, and that evidence of safe delivery and reception of the goods /services will the money be then released to the provider of those goods/ services. Again that money has already been taken from your account and held in a special suspense account of the bank for these types of transactions, and the details checked by them before reslease of the fund; in effect acting as your GuarantorNone of the electronic funds transfers can be recalled once executed. The only electronic paymen which can be recalled is BACS (Bankers Automated Clearing Services) which is a remittance /transmission system peculiar to the cleaing banks in the UK.The above are electronic and semi-manual transfers, where as the sort of transaction you are referring to is an over a manned counter not an ATM, which is to dispense cash, not accept packets.Chris R- London
