No, not really.You need to understand that the UK has a completely different University system than the USA.In the UK you apply to do a single subject — your application is handled by the department you applied to.There's no concept of the “major”, and we don't have any requirements for you to study anything but your subject.I have studied physics, and nothing but physics since the day I arrived at Oxford.The application process reflects this.The only selection criterion is: are you good at the subject you are applying for?Because they know exactly what you're applying to do for the three years*, the application process is about that subject, and nothing else.My interviews were with 6 actual physicists (in three groups of two), who asked me nothing but mathematics and physics questions.The fact that I played the flute, played rugby and had volunteered for a charity for years was absolutely irrelevant.In the USA, because of the unfixed nature of an application, they cannot have the same ultra-specialised application process. After all, getting a bunch of chemists to interrogate someone who decides they'd prefer to study modern art is a somewhat pointless endeavour!That means the USA has a much broader set of criteria that they examine in an application.Stuff like extracurriculars actually matters to them — because it kind of has to, due to the lack of specialisation.I am making no judgement about which system is better, or which is worse.For me, depth-over-breadth is the right choice — I'd much rather learn twice as much about physics, and nothing about anything else than I would half as much physics but about twice as much stuff.But I know other people who would love the breadth-first approach.They're wildly different approaches to studying a subject, which is why I think it is ridiculously simplistic to have both UK and US universities on the same ranking scale, with no accounting for the huge differences between them!The different styles of university is reflected in what they look for in a student.Depth-first institutions will care only about how good you are at your subjects, and everything else can fall by the wayside.Breadth-first institutions will look for a more rounded individual.And that means different selection criteria.Not easier, or worse — just different.*Because we specialise immediately, normal degrees in the UK are only 3 years long.
