PDF Editor FAQ

How much of modern India's 'modesty' culture (how women are expected to cover up, etc.) is pre Mughal and how much is Mughal influence?

The modesty culture is a gift not from the Mughals but the Delhi Sultanate that preceded it. Compared to the Sultanate, the Mughals rulers come across as angelic beings.Savages like Ghazni, Ghori, Tughluq, Khilji, and Timur and their armies raided, plundered, raped women, and slaughtered Hindus en masse. [1]The Muslim heroes who figure larger than life in our history books committed some dreadful crimes. Mahmud of Ghazni, Qutb-ud-Din Aibak, Balban, Mohammed bin Qasim, and Sultan Mohammad Tughlak, all have blood-stained hands that the passage of years has not cleansed. Indeed, the presence of Muslim historians on their various campaigns has ensured that the memory of their deeds will live long after they were buried.Seen through Hindu eyes, the Muslim invasion of their homeland was an unmitigated disaster. Their temples were razed, their idols smashed, their women raped, their men killed or taken slaves. When Mahmud of Ghazni entered Somnath on one of his annual raids, he slaughtered all 50,000 inhabitants. Aibak killed and enslaved hundreds of thousands. The list of horrors is long and painful. In the book, “History of Medieval India”[2] , author and Historian Satish Chandra comments that it is during the Sultante that "the practice of keeping women in seclusion and asking them to veil their faces in the presence of outsiders, that is, the practice of purdah became widespread among the upper class women".The entire practice of Jauhar[3] started so that the women were spared, in the case of a lost war, rape and enslavement by the invaders. The movie Padmavat is a retelling of probably the most “famous” case of mass self-immolation carried out by Rani Padmini and the women of Chittor in order to be spared the atrocities of the vile Alauddin Khilji.Ancient Indian texts rarely mention women covering their faces except for in the company of elders where they would cover their heads as a sign of respect. The surviving murals and paintings at Ajanta and Ellora depict women with bare top bodies, and obviously uncovered faces, except for ornamental adorations. In the Mahabharata, when Yudhisthir lost Draupadi in the game of dice against Duryodhan and Shakuni, and she was summoned to the court, she arrived clad in a “single piece of clothing”.[4]Grabbing her by her long hair, Duhshasana pulled and dragged her to the sabha, like a plantain tree buffeted by the wind. When she was thus dragged, she bent down her body and softly whispered, “It is the period of my menses now. O evil-minded one! I am only clad in a single garment. O you who are not an arya! Do not take me to the sabha thus.”But he forcibly grabbed her by her black hair and told Krishna, “Pray to Krishna and Jishnu and Hari and Nara. Cry out for help, but I will take you. O Yajnaseni! This may be the time of your menses. But whether you are clad in a single garment or in no garments at all, you have been won at the game and are now a slave. One can sport with a slave as one desires.” Her hair was dishevelled. As she was pulled around by Duhshasana, her half-garment had come loose. She burnt with shame and mortification. In the book “Costumes and Ornaments as Depicted in the Sculptures of Gwalior Museum”[5], author Sulochana Ayyar talks about the male and female attire during the Gupta period.Encyclopedia Brittanica[6] also details that the “purdah” system originated in Persia and was brought to the Indian subcontinent by the invaders. The practice of purdah is said to have originated in the Persian culture and to have been acquired by the Muslims during the Arab conquest of what is now Iraq in the 7th century AD. Muslim domination of northern India in turn influenced the practice of Hinduism, and purdah became usual among the Hindu upper classes of northern India.Footnotes[1] Demons from the past —Irfan Husain[2] Satish Chandra History of Medieval India 800-1700.pdf[3] Jauhar - Wikipedia[4] https://ia802900.us.archive.org/25/items/TheMahabharata_201808/The%20Mahabharata.pdf[5] Costumes and Ornaments as Depicted in the Sculptures of Gwalior Museum[6] Purdah | Islamic custom

Typography: When is it OK for a designer to use an existing font for a logo design?

I'm not sure there is one good answer for this. It seems to depend on the particular font company. I would think you are fine to use a free typeface that gives you a commercial free option (check the user agreement). I think it's not as clear cut for the others. For example, a similar question on the Adobe help site as answered by Adobe staff states:"All fonts licensed from Adobe permit at least preview and print embedding (and incur no further royalties for distribution of PDF and EPS in which such fonts are embedded), meaning that you may use such fonts for logo design, print, etc."Adobe Fonts for commercial logos, print, and moreBut this is from House Industries:"Logo UsageThere is no additional charge for companies under $5 million (US Dollars) in annual gross revenue. If the logo has a specific application for a business within another company, then use the estimated gross revenue for that venture. For example a logo for a major motion picture would be priced on the movie gross, not the studio gross.$5 million to $10 million: $5000$10 million to $50 million: $10,000$50 million and over: $15,000"Page on HouseindA site like MyFonts sells fonts from multiple foundries each of whom may have different rules.Your safest bet, if you are not sure, would be to contact the foundry and ask.

Most of the Southeast Asian movies like Korean, Japanese, Thai and Chinese are very interesting and entertaining. Why is it that they are not promoted that much in India, as the cultures of most of the Asian countries are quite similar, just like the tastes and preferences?

Answer to this question is very subjective because defining Indian's is itself a big task as Indians are so diverse and just come to unites in 2 expectational situations i.e Cricket and Movies .We love to look our culture at silver screens than some Japanese or Thai movies and moreover Indian film industry is still unexploited unlike Hollywood .So i think its like a small kid who when get bored after the usual home made food would look after outside food for a change.* According to the DI International Business Development (DIBD), a consulting unit of the Confederation of Danish Industry, Bollywood generated revenues of $3-billion in 2011 – this figure has been growing by 10 percent a year.By 2016, revenue is expected to reach $4.5 billion. Bollywood gross receipts have almost tripled since 2004.* But since ticket prices are so much lower in India than in the US., Hollywood generates much higher revenue – as much as $51 billion annually, according to Page on bollywoodcountry.com.* Outside of India, Bollywood has many fans in neighboring Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, as well as countries with large Indo-Pakistani communities, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, parts of East and Southern Africa and the U.S.* Bollywood is even popular in nations with virtually no Indian presence – like Japan, Germany and Russia.According to BBC,Karan Johar, a film director, said: "Of the 1.2 billion population of India, movies should reach out to at least 300 million people [the size of India’s middle class]. But currently, our reach is limited to 45 million. If we figure out how to cover this gap, it will be a game-changer".But our movies are still doing good although we have a large room for improvement and all the thanks goes to Indian diaspora for foreign earnings and increasing our foreign viewership .Source : Non-resident Indian and person of Indian originBollywood At 100: How Big Is India’s Mammoth Film Industry?Page on ey.com India/$FILE/Indias-Entertainment-Economy_Oct_%202011_.pdfNeed Upvotes to Survive ;)Comments welcomed
