I've been married to the same woman for 50 years. We married while I was an undergraduate. She helped me get through college, pick the graduate school "we" would go to, graduate with MA and Ph.D. from there, and be successful for 31 years as professor and chair of the Department of Sociology at Northern Illinois University.She, on the other hand, was attending Eastern Michigan University when we met on a blind date at my school, Western Michigan University. By the end of our freshman years, she had dropped out of school and I had "advanced" to the Honors College at WMU.Educational careers going in opposite directions, right?There was a reason. I grew up in a family in which both my maternal grandparents had graduated from college, my mother earned bachelors and masters degrees and two sisters went to college, one graduating (with BA and two masters degrees), and one not (the second because she was bored out of her mind and wanted to get on with life).My wife, on the other hand, was the first in her family ever to attend college and the only one of her generation -- cousins as well as sisters included. She dropped out of school for two reasons: 1) she had been given a car to commute about 40 miles to EMU rather than be allowed to go away to college where she wanted to go, and 2) she had to schedule classes around her expected "mothering" of two sisters -- 10 and 12 years younger than she -- from the time they got home from school until dinner and then was hounded by everyone in the family -- none of whom had ever been on a college campus much less in a college classroom -- to "not desert the family" by going to her room and studying after dinner.We married before my senior year. She came to campus, worked in the bookstore, and helped me finish up without "having" to be hitchhiking to her home 120 miles away most weekends as I had done during my sophomore and junior years.We went to Madison, Wisconsin, to attend the University of Wisconsin. She got a job; I studied. The second year, while still working, she took a couple of classes. The "girl" who had "flunked out" of EMU got all A's at UW.She continued another with a couple of more classes the second year but had to drop out: Somebody had got her pregnant, and she delivered our first child in September, expecting to continue her classes as soon as she could get back to them after the birth -- an expected couple of weeks. She never made it back to class. Our daughter was born with only one kidney and that one was atrophied. Five operations later and waiting for waiting for a kidney transplant as soon as she grew large enough to accept one, I left ABD for my first job because the company that provided student insurance at UW notified us that having spent a few hundreds of thousand so far on our daughter they would no longer insure her at the end of my fourth year and were not required to after a "full four years" of my pursuing the Ph.D. . I had to go out and get a job somewhere where a "group plan" was provided so she could not be denied insurance for her impending kidney transplant (which, in 1969, would have been one of the first five or so infantile transplants attempted in the U.S. or maybe worldwide).She had her operations the next few years; we had our second daughter six years later when our first was "out of danger."My wife neither worked outside the home nor went to school until our second daughter was about five. Then she returned to school at NIU and graduated, with honors, the same year our first daughter graduated from high school. As we had talked about when we were courting, I worked while she did "non-profit stuff." She started the first Rape Crisis Center in DeKalb County and the first CASA a well as serving on the boards of a number of other social service agencies before going to work as an Admissions Officer at NIU. (Family joke: She let them in; I (mostly in my statistics classes) flunked them out.)We both retired the same day in 2001.I tell you all this to provide context to my answer to your question: "What you think special about this difference or does it suck?"What I think of our difference in education is:<> She's kept me grounded in reality for 50+ years;<> In many ways she's brighter than I am, as all our friends recognize;<> She tells me she learned more statistic from lectures I gave while asleep with her in bed than she did in statistics classes she was required to take to get her BA;<> She edits my Letters to the Editor wonderfully, and I edit hers tolerably.Education doesn't make the difference; learning does. My advice? Go for it if you love someone regardless of their education. I did, and I've been happy ever since.

You might recognize these kids.If not, these are the Hart children.Their names are Hannah, Ciera, Jeremiah, Abigail, Markis, and Devonte. These six children were adopted by a seemingly lovely couple, named Sarah and Jennifer Hart, who had their own struggles with their relationship after coming out to the public, prompting their multiple relocations as a couple. After adopting the children (I believe it was in groups of three), the couple were praised for their heroism by their friends, sharing all of their love with children who wanted nothing more than that - to be loved.As you might have guessed from the photo above, the Harts spread a message of peace, love, unity, and free hugs. You'd imagine that same kind of harmony would carry from the public to behind the scenes.Sadly, this is not the case.I'll provide another image with everyone properly named this time, this will be important later on.The children from left to right are Markis, Ciera, Jeremiah, Abigail, Devonte, and Hannah with Sarah (left) and Jennifer (right) in the back.It became apparent that some things were… off, with some people growing concerned about how the children were being treated at home.The torment begins in Minnesota.Going back as far as 2008, Hannah had gone to school with bruises. Jennifer had beaten her with a belt.Abigail in 2010 suffered back and stomach injuries over a penny dispute (Abigail found a penny and her parents thought she had lied). Jennifer also held Abigail's head under water. Remember, this is all over a penny. A single cent.Often, the children were not fed. They were punished by being denied meals, and when they WERE fed, it was minimal. Such as the family ordering a pizza, and the kids being allowed one small slice.I don't know about you, but that wouldn't cut it for me. I'd still be starving.When authorities stepped in the first time, Sarah took all the blame for the children being beaten and given little to eat. She plead guilty to assault and was sentenced to one year of community service.However, the abuse continued.Hannah Hart told the nurses at school in 2011 that she hadn't eaten anything, and Sarah basically accused her of "playing the food card". Whatever the hell that means.Of course, likely to escape the accusations (and hide the obvious abuse), the family moved to Oregon. There was an investigation on the Harts going on there already.Now, you won't be happy with me for citing Wikipedia, but I have compiled most of this information from other sources, I'll only cheat once. Some family friends stated, according to Wikipedia, that: "the children were forced to raise their hands before speaking, could not wish each other happy birthday, and could not laugh at the dinner table."They were mortified of Jennifer. They almost behaved like robots. Trained robots.Another investigation was conducted, but there were apparently no signs of new abuse of the children based on interviews with them and the parents.The final stop for the Harts was in Washington. The year was 2017.Woodland, Washington. The Harts had relocated once again, next to the DeKalbs. That'll be important momentarily.It was August (I believe) of 2017. Hannah Hart, early in the morning, jumped out of her window to the DeKalbs, pleading for food and help.Jen and Sarah found them, explaining away the situation as Hannah being a "drug baby" (likely growing up in a drugged environment). Hannah was then taken back home. Who knows what kind of horrific abuse she faced at the hands of these vile people.Devonte began showing up at the neighbors' home, asking for food as well. This was when the DeKalbs made the report to CPS. You can actually find the call online if you search, I believe. CPS tried contacting the Harts twice, to no avail.On March 26, 2018, the Hart family were driving in their SUV when Jennifer Hart swerved over a cliff on California State Route 1, in Mendocino County, California. The act was intentional.Jennifer was revealed to be way over the legal alcohol limit when driving, and some of the kids had possibly taken drowsy medicine before the crash.That's the SUV the Harts drove in. It kills me to see something like this.Five of the six children's remains were found, except for Devonte. He has been presumed dead, however, and his death certificate was signed April 3, 2019.Sarah had made bizarre searches about things such as Benedryl and the nature of drowning days before, implying this had been planned.Absolutely selfish, and tragic.Sarah also spoke about later that she wished someone had told her it was okay not to have a big family, because otherwise she and Jennifer never would have adopted the children.They had even had a foster daughter beforehand, until one day they left her at a therapy appointment and never came back.These weren't good people.These children deserved justice, they deserved better.You see these pictures, especially the first one, and you would think these children live a beautiful life. But remember - things are not always what they seem. They smiled for the pictures, and, as some claimed, went right back to looking "dead".It's so sad to see a picture like that, and realize the horrible reality these children lived every day, only to be involuntarily plunged to their deaths.
