Is a degree from Mexico's top university (UNAM) worthless compared with one from any US college?

Not at all. Actually, in reality, a degree from most U.S. higher learning institutions, and certainly the majority of those that would have “College” in their name, is distinctly worse than a bachelor’s degree (licenciatura) from UNAM.Now, don’t get me wrong, if somehow your choices are between going to Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Yale, etc on a full scholarship or doing a bachelors degree in UNAM, I would heavily consider those U.S. universities (I would consider, say, the top 5 to top 20 best in the area of your major/degree, depending on area, but usually not below that). Even then, there is a certain broad experience of Mexico as a country that you would get at UNAM, given how large and diverse a place it is, which you would not get at any university abroad, and possibly neither at any other Mexican institution.Purely academically, though, UNAM still does quite well. For example, take the entire list of all universities worldwide with nobel laureates: List of Nobel laureates by university affiliation . UNAM has 3. No other university in Mexico boasts a single one. Many universities in that list are U.S. universities. However, the vast majority of universities in the U.S. are most definitely *not* on that list. Now, I am going to tell you my own experience, so you can judge if my UNAM degree was worthless to me: I did a bachelor’s in UNAM in Computer Science, and I am currently doing a Ph.D. in the U.S. Keep in mind that CS, at least 10 years ago, when I begun my bachelor’s, was a relatively new and ‘weak’ area at UNAM (compared with say, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, Mathematics, etc). These are a few of the doors my UNAM’s degree helped open for me (will focus on the U.S., but as other people mention, it also opens many more important doors in Mexico):In my last year of bachelor’s, I did an internship at Microsoft in Seattle, WA, USA. Turns out Microsoft recruits people from UNAM directly, on campus, for its U.S. offices. Many of my friends went there as interns and now work there full time or have moved on to Facebook, Google, etc.Later, when I applied for Ph.D. programs, famous professors at MIT and Stanford had not only heard about UNAM, but had a positive impression of it as a university. In one case, they had personally heard of the work done in research by one of my UNAM professors (who wrote me a letter of recommendation). This is a much more positive reaction that you would get coming from even relatively well known universities in the U.S., let alone *any random university*.Talking to friends of mine who did their undergrads in the U.S. at places like MIT, CMU, Stanford or Berkeley - which are, by the way, tied for the top 4 universities worldwide in CS - I often feel like I got about 70-80% of the opportunities they got during undergrad (in terms of academics and of industry experience, combined), but at the same time I did so without accruing student loans or similar disadvantages. They are always shocked when I tell them my tuition was $0.05 dollars a year. One thing to keep in mind about UNAM, though, is that it is huge and has an enormous spread in quality, both for professors and for students. This is obvious if you give it some thought: UNAM has 342,542 students (43% more than the entire University of California system, counting all campuses; 31 times as many as MIT). Every year, for subjects like Calculus, UNAM has literally multiple dozens of classes being offered simultaneously for the same “course number”, with many different professors. Some of them are top researchers in their field. Some are not great scientists but are amazing lecturers. Some are just ok. A few are, well… worse than ok.Because of the size and the breadth of people, if you compare the average graduate of UNAM with the average graduate of a top university in the U.S., you will likely see UNAM stack up relatively unfavorably. However, if you look for them, UNAM provides their students with hundreds of word-class academic and profesional opportunities in most fields, equivalent to what you can find in some very prestigious U.S. universities. Finally, if you compare the average graduate of UNAM with the average graduate of all state universities in the U.S. (let alone community colleges and dubious for-profit “colleges”), I would be willing to bet the UNAM students are significantly better prepared. So, my answer, is a resounding “No way”. I say that as someone who has been both to UNAM and to top universities in the U.S.p.s. That said, depending on the specific degree and the specific universities, there are cases where I would not chose UNAM (a business degree, for example; or if you want to practice law/medicine in the U.S. you might want a degree from a U.S. university, even if the academics are weaker; or you got that full-ride scholarship to Harvard/Stanford/MIT; etc).

What schools accepted/rejected you (April 2020)?

I’ve been following these kind of questions for 2 years now and I’m excited to finally be able write down mine. I’m an international student and honestly, I’m not as impressive as most people in this app. I only applied to 7 universities since I didn’t take the SAT/ACT and due to its expensive registration fee. My application isn’t that strong either because I come from a school that is designed for the students to apply to local universities. Here are the things on my application.GPA: 90/100 UW (I think it’s around 3.7 in a 4.0 scale?)TOEFL: 92/120ECs:A summer program in London for 2 weeks which helped me be confident talking in English and received a C1 achievement. Was a secretary and a scriptwriter for a film festival that is held annually by my school in 10th grade and 11th grade.Did a volunteer (community service) in an orphanage for a week. Was involved in my school’s journalism team as a member in 10th grade, a secretary in 11th grade, and became an editor-in-chief in 12th grade. Was a secretary for my cinematography club in 10th grade and 11th grade. Was involved in my school’s annual camping event as a participant in 10th grade and a secretary in 11th grade.Participated in Geography National Olympic even though I didn’t win.Was a tutor for Math and English for 3 years of high school.Received a Summa Cum Laude in 10th grade (both semesters), Magna Cum Laude in 11th grade (first semester), and Cum Laude in 11th grade (second semester.(In my home country, being a secretary is kind of a big deal since it’s one of the main committees that every event has. It comes with a huge responsibility and it was a honor for me to be one for many events in my school).Essay: My Common App personal statement isn’t that strong in my opinion. I talked about how my voice was silenced when I was bullied in 9th grade and how that became an inspiration for me to the point I made a movie for the film festival based on the experience that I had.Letter of recommendation: I had 4 teachers, including my school counselor, that wrote me a recommendation letter and I think it’s pretty strong. Now onto the colleges. I applied as a political science major. I didn’t apply for financial aid because I just found out about FAFSA around 3 days before I submitted my application so there wasn’t any time to gather the documents.University of Washington, Seattle - Waitlisted. This one was the first to come and it really hurt, honestly. My dad really, really wanted me to go here since Seattle is a pretty good place to stay and I also completely fell in love with the campus at the first sight when I visited there. I accepted the invitation and hopefully I can get accepted to it.EDIT: I got off the waiting list and I just got accepted to UW!! I got the news this morning and God knows how Thrilled I was when I opened my email!! (I sent them a letter of appeal and I guess apparently it works. I was extremely surprised because I was warned that only 1 out of 20 people who are usually offered an admission after submitting an appeal form).University of British Columbia - Accepted. This was my dream school back in 10th grade because I was really into Canada, especially Vancouver back then.George Washington University - Accepted. I initially applied here as a safety and because my mom really loves Washington, D.C. I also heard that the internship opportunities are great.Colby College - Rejected. I’ve been interested in liberal arts college for quite a while and I heard Colby is one of the best. I’m not surprised by the rejection letter considering they only have a 16% acceptance rate.Union College - Accepted. I only applied here because it didn’t have a registration fee.Lesley University - Accepted. I only applied here also because it didn’t have a registration fee.New York University - Rejected. This one also hurt so much. I had a bad feeling about it for a week before the announcement, but I genuinely thought I had a chance. I visited the campus last January and I was really looking forward to attending. It’s upsetting. So, that was my experience. I really regretted my choice for not taking any SATs when I had the chance and also for not preparing to study TOEFL better. I haven’t made any decision, but I think I am kind of leaning toward GWU. It’s located in Washington, D.C. and since I plan to major in political science, I believe the opportunities are great. But I’m still putting some hopes for UW Seattle, so fingers crossed!EDIT: Since I now got admitted to UW, it’s a big possibility that I will go there even though I know the political science department is much stronger in GWU. UW is way more affordable and it offers more traditional college experience compared to city campus like GWU.Best of luck to every senior out there!! I know this global pandemic really sucks and we don’t know if this will affect our college experience, especially for international students like me, but I’m really hoping for the best.
