Are therapists afraid of empathy level 5 because if they are wrong, they risk feeling like a fraud, looking like a fool, supervision time if their client complains, or getting sued or reported because they were wrong?

I had to lookup Empathy level 5. Sounds like something out of Star Trek. So you are referring to a high level of empathy. Got it.The thing is empathy isn’t a test that you get right or wrong. It’s a feeling of understanding what someone is going through. Might it not be accurate? Sure, that’s possible, in such a case a therapist would likely be getting feedback from their patient that suggests something was off.You have a very skewed notion of therapy. Therapists might feel like they are foolish or frauds at times. Professionals deal with those feelings in their own therapy.Supervision is a good thing. It’s additional support and feedback regarding a particular case, which for any passionate clinician, is a wonderful thing. If I could I’d be able to consult other clinicians on every case. The more help I get the better it is for my patients. That’s why clinicians are more than willing to pay for ongoing supervision and continued education.Clinicians get sued if they’ve been grossly unprofessional and likely exploited their position to take advantage of a patient.Complaints are encouraged. They are usually directed at the clinician.Getting it wrong? Therapist isn’t a math test. Clinicians try to do their best to facilitate growth and positive change in their patients, but they aren’t seers who have all the answers. Life rarely works that way.

Is a psychotherapist better qualified to diagnose personality disorders than a psychologist?

Who is best qualified to diagnose Personality Disorders? The only people who are fully qualified to diagnose personality disorders are mental health clinicians who have done 3+ years of additional post-graduate training in this speciality. The degree they hold, MD (psychiatrist), PhD or PsyD (psychologist), or LCSW (social worker) is less important than their training. What is psychotherapy?Psychotherapy is the term for the treatment of mental health issues that uses various forms of talk therapy and adjunctive treatments (such as hypnosis or biofeedback training).Mental health professionals who are trained to diagnose personality disorders are usually trained to use the appropriate type of psychotherapy for each PD. This means that over time, they are likely to become better diagnosticians. Years of experience with treatment will give them direct feedback on whether their diagnoses are usually correct.Punchline: The diagnosis and treatment of personality disorders require at least three years of specialized training. There are a number of types of mental health clinicians with a variety of different degrees that with proper training would be able to diagnose and treat personality disorders equally well.Elinor Greenberg, PhD, CGPIn private practice in NYC and the author of the book: Borderline, Narcissistic, and Schizoid Adaptations.www.elinorgreenberg.com

How helpful are brain spotting and neurofeedback in treating CPTSD?

Both are treatments that are used for trauma but they belong to different parts of the treatment. Neurofeedback is a regulation modality (Phase 1) while brainspotting is to process traumatic memories (Phase II).Nobody should move into processing traumatic memories without stabilizing the nervous system. It’s counterproductive and can be retraumatizing.Brainspotting is a derivative of EMDR (Grant, the developer of the modality was an EMDR clinician before), but I insist, they only work if the person has developed regulation skills and is stable.Neurofededback (NF) is the most effective and faster regulation technique if the clinician has good equipment and is well versed in neurobiology. There are some cheap pieces of equipment that call themselves NF without the accuracy and the real-time feedback that the brain needs to reprogram itself. And there are clinicians that don't understand the brain and apply protocols without really knowing what the effect would be. It’s a difficult modality, and costly for the clinician and the client, but the most effective and faster by far.For a person to heal from C-PTSD, both phases are needed fully and not only partially. And there's a third Phase: integration and reprogramming, that is also necessary to complete the treatment. You may find this article useful: What is Trauma Therapy Like?
