What do you mean by the "best" home control system? Best as in least expensive? Best as in best for a DIY project that a consumer can setup and service? Or, best as in most feature rich and flexible? The answer will vary depending on the definition of "best".I will assume by "best" you mean the most feature rich and flexible. Based on my perspective, which includes 15 years in the industry, I would say few systems come close to what Crestron can do. They have it all, and then some.There are keypads and touchpanels that can be programmed to do absolutely anything. There are several different lighting systems that can either replace existing switches and dimmers, or allow relocation of switches to an electronics closet leaving the walls clutter free. They have audio and video distribution hardware that allow all components to be located remotely, sending HD video across the house over Cat5 cabling. Virtually any kind of security or HVAC system can be integrated, using custom written modules if there aren't existing RS-232 or ethernet software written already. And so much more...In addition to touchpanels, hard button keypads, hand held remote controls, mobile device apps and web pages for controlling the system, you can also program sub-system interfaces to control other products. For instance, you can make buttons on a Lutron lighting keypad control the audio system or TV functions, or the pool, or the entry gate, or a sprinkler system. Or, as I had to do several times, make a Jandy pool and spa controller keypad, or a security keypad, send commands to the lighting system, with Crestron acting as the middle man, passing commands between the systems.Yes, Crestron is expensive. And yes, unless you are technically inclined it does require a programmer and/or an installer everytime you add or change DVD players or want to change the functionality of a button or scene. However, in terms of flexibility and interoperability between sub-systems, the variety and customizability of user interfaces, and the range of hardware available, only AMX comes anywhere close.I am a bit biased, having been a Crestron dealer and programmer. And to be fair, things have progressed a bit since I have been active in the industry, so there could be some new developments that I am not aware of... However, just because a device can be controlled with an app, or a webpage, doesn't make it "intelligent". In addition, considering potential security issues, having the operation of your home acessible in any way to an online service, simply doesn't seem that smart to me.An example of a "smart home" is when the garage doors open, and the security system is armed, and it's dark outside, that lights inside the house light a pathway to the main living spaces, and the thermostats change to night mode, while waiting for the security system to be disarmed. Once the system is disarmed, your favorite music playlist can start playing in the home at a low volume level, while the spa is turned on and warmed up, but only if it's a weekday, and not a holiday. That is what could be done 10 years ago with Crestron, and it's still not possible with many so-called "automation" systems today.Then again, not everyone needs that kind of system. For many people simply having one user interface to individually control multiple systems is enough. What is "best" depends on one's expectation of what "intelligent" means, and the amount of expendible income one has at one's disposal.

A lot depends on what type of universal remote you are talking about. Some universal remotes only need a three digit code programmed. However, to be professional, you would want to run the TV through several commands to check to make sure the remote is functioning correctly.Some remotes are programmed via computer either online or via special software. Logitech Harmony remotes are an example online programmed remotes. More professional remotes are made by URC, RTI and Crestron. These need professional software to be programmed. I would not recommend ever programming a remote without testing after finishing.

I personally use Z-Wave, as I began implementation in my own home in 2010. I would love to have a Crestron system, but honestly, with a little programming knowledge, and the right hubs, you can achieve similar results.The only issue I've come across was when one of my hubs died, I lost most of my automation. Since I've replaced most receptacles and light switches with Z-Wave compatible switches and receptacles, I was dead in the water until my replacement came from Mi Casa Verde.I've programmed my system with a lot of rules and exceptions. For example, if I lock the front door after 9pm the alarm sets, ten minutes later, the main house lights that are still on fade to 0% while the bedroom lights are brought to 60%.Your big box store automation system doesn't usually allow for this kind of customization.There are door to door salesmen for Vivant and most cable companies offer home automation.However, there are not many companies that will install and program a wireless system with the rules, exceptions, and permissions I spoke about earlier. I think this is where the home installation market is going in the very near future.
