Harvard CS161 is supposedly an excellent detailed course on OS's. Is any part of the Harvard CS161 available online? If not, does anyone know of an equivocal course in terms of difficulty and detail of material?

How was your first semester in graduate school? Did it go as planned?
Ahahaha, my first semester in graduate school didn’t go according to plan at all, but maybe that is why this semester was so much fun (looking back) and such an instrumental turning point in my life and career.I joined Georgia Tech in Fall 2014 as a master’s student in ECE and wanted to specialize in VLSI and chip design (computer architecture). The reason for this is that in India, VLSI was the closest I could get to the fundamental transistor level (device physics classes weren’t offered in my undergrad), so I was going with what I knew. However, the VLSI and Computer Architecture classes were full so I couldn’t register for them. Then I saw a class that was about Quantum Mechanics for Electrical Engineers (ECE 6451[1][1][1][1] ) and was being taught my future PhD thesis adviser. On day 1, the class had about 20–25 students. By the end of the first week, only 10–12 students were left. I decided to take that because I figured it’ll be nice to know how transistors work at the atomic level if I’m going to be designing chips, and it sounded interesting.Catalog Description (ECE 6451): Basis of quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and the behavior of solids to serve as an introduction to the modern study of semiconductors and semiconductor devices. The next class I took was a graduate level physics class on Quantum Mechanics (PHYS 6105[2][2][2][2]), since I decided to get my graduate minor in physics. The pre-requisite was undergraduate QM classes, which I of course didn’t have. I had never seen Schrodinger’s equation before in my life, and I now had two graduate level quantum mechanics classes in one semester. I was foolish and bold. But what else is youth for if not for the occasional foolhardy adventures?Catalog Description (PHYS 6105): An axiomatic development of quantum mechanics. Topics include linear vector spaces, linear operators, infinitesimal transformations, function space, representation and transformation groups. The physics QM class was hard. Very hard. Physics is so much harder than engineering, and I would spend 4–5 days in the week with the physics problem set, and maybe only solve 1–2 out of 4 problems. Sleeping in the library became a regular occurrence, and I occasionally drank coffee like water. The advantage of the brutal physics class was that it made my ECE QM class so much easier, and I was acing my future adviser’s class due to the rigor from the physics class. At the start of the semester, I was at the bottom of the graduate physics class (I was one of only two engineers in a class full of physics grad students), I knew nothing about the subject, but by the end I was solidly in the middle of the pack. I am proud of myself for being able to do this, and I value the B in this class more than any other A in graduate school. This B was earned with blood, sweat, and tears. The third class was called Interface IC Design (ECE 6422[3][3][3][3]), and it was about circuit design for MEMS and sensing devices. It involved designing micrometer scale gyroscopes, resonators, and how to design driver circuits for them. Very interesting and challenging stuff. Analog IC design.Catalog Description (ECE 6422): Design of high-performance integrated interface circuits for various MEMS and sensing devices. System level issues in integrated microsystems. The last class I took was about semiconductor device fabrication and processing (ECE 6450[4][4][4][4]), which was the easiest of the lot and very helpful. In the future, I would be a device designer, so it was great to understand device processing techniques and technologies.Catalog Description (ECE 6450): Presents the fundamentals of microelectronics material, device, and circuit fabricationAnyway, I ended up getting As in all three ECE classes (yay!) and a B in the physics class (bigger yay!). My adviser was impressed by me, so he mentioned that he has an opening for a research assistant in the next semester for a laser design project funded by DARPA, and whether I’d be interested in pursuing a PhD with his group. I said “Yes!” and converted to a PhD student in the next semester (Spring 2015).Footnotes[1] ECE Course Syllabus[1] ECE Course Syllabus[1] ECE Course Syllabus[1] ECE Course Syllabus[2] PHYS 6105 - Quantum Mechanics I[2] PHYS 6105 - Quantum Mechanics I[2] PHYS 6105 - Quantum Mechanics I[2] PHYS 6105 - Quantum Mechanics I[3] ECE Course Syllabus[3] ECE Course Syllabus[3] ECE Course Syllabus[3] ECE Course Syllabus[4] ECE Course Syllabus[4] ECE Course Syllabus[4] ECE Course Syllabus[4] ECE Course Syllabus
What were the most chilling quotes ever said?
It’s Christmas Day so I thought I would lighten the mood on this very heavy topic.Three of us grad students were discussing what classes to take before the start of the Spring semester. New Year’s Day had just passed and we all decided that we needed to get in better physical shape for the coming year. So we take a look at some of the PE course offerings. This looks like a good one … Conditional Swimming. Now, none of us are big time swimmers but we know how to swim so, what the hell, sign us up.Two weeks later our class meets at the Olympic-sized pool for the first time. Some kids from the college swim team are enrolled, plus a lot of other kids that look like they’ve swam competitively, and … us. The instructor goes over the course syllabus with the class. Lots of interval training along with some recommended swims between classes. He then closes the introduction with a quote I still have not forgotten after thirty plus years.“We are going to warm up with a 1000 meter swim.”Merry Christmas, everyone.
