PDF Editor FAQ

Do professors mind if students eat in their class?

When students eat in my class, I’m fine with it, and I’ve never noticed it becoming a distraction. Dartmouth’s class schedule does not have a time slot in midday for lunch, and so some students just cannot take time out for lunch if they have classes scheduled back to back during lunch hours. If the only chance they have to eat lunch is during my course, I have no problem with that.

What are things university professors get sick of seeing students do?

I wasn’t in class on Monday, did we do anything important? (Answer: no, when we saw you weren’t there, we all gave up and went home.) (Answer2: yes, Monday’s class including all my remarks word for word will constitute the final exam.)(Answer3, given after answers like 1 and 2 go through my head: you already know what was covered since it is on the class schedule in the syllabus.)What do I need to do to get (note: not “earn”) an A? (N.B.2 this is almost always asked near the end of the semester by a student whose performance has made it mathematically impossible.) (Answer: build a time machine, go back to the beginning of the semester, and actually do the work this time.)(Answer2: you already know the requirements for this standard, since the syllabus spells out how points are earned in each category.)

How do professors feel when students leave class early?

As long as they leave quietly, without disturbing the rest of the class, I really don’t care. My students are adults. If they leave early, I assume that they have their own reasons to leave early.Maybe they have a tight class schedule—a class that meets 10 minutes after mine, but in a room that takes 20 minutes to walk to.Maybe they have a job whose schedule isn’t synchronized with my class.Maybe they need to use the toilet.Maybe they need to catch a plane to a job interview.Maybe their roommate texted them asking for a ride to the emergency room.Maybe they decide that right now their time is better spent working on a project for another class.Maybe they’re completely lost, and they don’t think they’re going to get anything out of ten more minutes of word salad.Maybe they’re just bored.Of course, students who leave early are still responsible for whatever course material we cover in the last five minutes of class. But they know that. Or at least, for purposes of assigning grades, I assume they know that.Sure, it’s always nice if the student knows in advance that they need to leave early and talks to me about it first. I always thank them sincerely and ask them to sit near the door. But I’m not insulted or offended if they don’t. The class isn’t for me; it’s for them.

I was relieved that non-technical people receiving the documents to sign had no trouble at all with it. The documents are returned promptly. It is great having the option to notify non-signers when a document is signed.
