PDF Editor FAQ

Is college life at IIITH under too much pressure?

The college life at IIIT-H is under too much pressure and the students of IIIT had to manage between the academic and cultural participation and ultimately they choose academics which leads to fewer participation in cultural programmes. To gave you an idea the schedule of ug1 and ug2 are as follows:~UG1:During the first year we had pt at 6 am in the morning and to pass pt we have to maintain at least 70% attendance and from 8:30 classes start and normally there will be 2–3 class of 1.5 hours depending upon branch. So mostly till 1 we had to attend classes since 85% attendance is compulsory. After 2 we have classes such as Human Values or HSS or maybe tutorial of some subject. In Human Values and HSS there is not much work to do but they are also compulsory and less attendance can result in failing in that subject. So overall from 6 am in the morning to 5 pm in the evening students are busy in attending all these classes. The rest of the time students will be busy in doing coding assignments struggling to get your programs through the internal Online Judge evaluation portal, within the deadline. Most of the subjects are common for the batch but if a student is enrolled in CHD, CND, BSD program at IIIT-H then he/she may have 1–2 assignment extra every week since these students have extra subjects specialized to their branch. Apart from this if a student is interested in cultural activities like freshers and fest then the students are expected to do dancing/singing practice whole night. During the whole semester a student would rarely find a free time and if by chance they have free time then they have to study for the mid semester exam which is conducted at an interval of 1 month and after that there will lab exam of various subjects followed by assignments, classes and the cycle repeat.UG2:If a student fail pt then he/she had to repeat in the 2nd year. Second year is pretty much same as first year every normal day is spend in classes, followed by assignments, deadlines. During second year most of the students had a compulsory course Structured system and design in which they had to work for a real time client and have to deliver a product by the end of semester and apart from the client work students also get very hard high level assignment like developing a game in python in that subject which makes 3rd semester one of the hardest and too much hectic. So I think the college life of students of IIIT-H is very different from the rest of the colleges of India and students are generally expected to cross their limits and work hard 24/7. During the first year it is very difficult for student to manage but as we entered into the second year we became more comfortable and at IIIT the first two years are very tough as compared to rest of the years so if we are able to manage these two years then after this we would never face problems. Generally after 1–2 years students get accustomed to this life and they starts to manage between academics and cultural more easily. I also believe that college puts this much pressure on us because they wants us to be more prepared than any other students across the country. They want us to tackle any hurdle with ease and get strong for the next.

What is your best/funniest boss revenge story?

Not my boss, but teacher , rather a professor. Those were m engineering 1st year days. There was this HSS professor who was good-looking and apparently was famous for giving good grades. What else would one look for ??I had registered for that HSS course - 'Cultural studies'Then comes the shocker. The course was really horrible. I ended up getting 6/10.I then created a fake profile of this married professor on bharat matrimony .com and gave her office phone number and email id which I had retrieved from the college portal.Thats it! I was so happy thinking that she would have been flooded with messages from guys.

What is it like to be at IIIT Hyderabad?

Warning: Long answer ahead.I was avoiding answering this despite A2A, since I was not sure this helps anyone. But anonymous’s answer prompted me to give another perspective on things. Following is from the perspective of a PG research student..In one word, it is awesome. It is undeniably one of the best things that happened in my life. Commenting on the things mentioned before,Food : It is variable, some days it is very good, some days bad, but the mess portal is a powerful tool we have here which IITs or other institutes don’t have. We can make any combination of messes by looking at menu or personal experience and taste. This allows you to set the best possible combination as per your preference and allows juggling whenever you start getting bored. That makes things quite manageable and better.Hostel life : In research students’ hostel, a lot of people go to hostel only to sleep, or when they are not in a mood to go to lab. So often we don’t get to know or meet people around us for days. Often we meet acquaintances while brushing or going for bath only..! But we get individual rooms, no restrictions, so it is peaceful and nice.Academics : Yes, classes are boring. But so is everywhere. In comparison, even the boring classes here are least less boring than the NPTEL lectures. Also, some profs are really good teachers. But then I think its not about the classes. Content is all on the web anyway. It is the direction it gives that matters. Apart from that, the assignments and projects are of very good level, and that really helps learn things better and improve skills. I’ve heard complaints about HSS, HV, PT, Yoga etc from UGs. We don’t have any of that, so I don’t know. But I suppose when you get so many other benefits, its okay to suck it up and get through a bit. But the PG community is away from all that, so any complaints you read about it are automatically invalid if you are looking for PG level.Ragging : IIITH is a community, and normally we would try to resolve our own issues internally as a community. However, I am talking about this here since this is a social evil not limited to this campus, and something really not acceptable. Hence my following points are of general validity, not just our institute.IIITH has adapted a different model to counter this, where a student committee called as Apex is made to ensure curbing of such activities and ensuring comfort of new students. However, it shocked me to see that despite everything, to some small extent, power games and bullying in the name of “healthy interaction” still exists, and it shocked me even more that some people consider it “lite” and “healthy”. Any power games are not acceptable. This is something we as a community need to take very seriously. Its a damn criminal offense, but in most college communities in India, students don’t take it as seriously as they should. Another important point is that freshers need to leave this idea that they need to keep their seniors happy to take their help. If someone needs to make you feel inferior to save their ego, you don’t need help of such people. If anyone is asking you to do something you’re not comfortable, say no and move away. They can’t touch you if you are strong willed. Speak up.This is an issue limited to not just one institute, one city, one nation, even in western countries bullying exists and is not taken as seriously as it should be. Its time we stand up against this.Coming back to IIITH, this is a completely non-existent issue for PG level, however. PG community is very chill. I hardly call anyone sir (except those who are too old in age, like 6–7 years!), most people are on first name terms and even crack jokes on each other. There is barely any concept of senior-junior, and the senior students are all super friendly. Helping your junior batch without any expectation in return is a trend and culture among us.Extra-curricular : There are lot of clubs. Some are active, some are not. Fest is not as good as IITs yet, but there are some nice events. In Felicity 18, I really enjoyed the talk by Padma Shri V Gyana Gandhi, the man behind ISRO’s cryo program. The Indian Ocean concert was awesome, and the whole campus was nicely decorated.Sports : Campus is small, and compared to IITs, we don’t have as good sports facilities. But it is improving, recently a new tennis court was inaugurated, so let us see.Research : Depends on lab to lab, but in some of the fields, IIITH is best not just in India, but in all of Asia. Being in such labs with such legendary people pursuing cutting edge research is an amazing experience.Peer group : No matter how intelligent you are, there are always some people better than you here. There are legend level and bond level people. Publishing 4 high quality papers at a time, getting PPO at Google, getting papers in CVPR, IJCV etc., getting selected to INRIA, CMU, etc for PhD, name any achievement in coding/research and you will find someone who has done it. This keeps you humble and gives motivation to always do better. So over all, at least as an MS student, it is amazing to be at IIIT Hyderabad, and things are continuously improving with time. So if you are considering whether to appear for PGEE, go ahead, fill the form. Also, don’t believe blindly on things people write on internet. Some times some people end up ranting just to take out their frustration. :)
