PDF Editor FAQ

What was the first car you learned to work on?

I grew up ( sorta ) in the Chisago Lakes, Mn area about 45 minutes north of St. Paul / Minneapolis close to the Wisconsin border. I kept driving by a small farm stead in a rural (more than average) area of Chisago county. It had a burgundy and rusty 1973 Plymouth Fury in high weeds for sale in the front yard with a very old and faded for sale sign taped inside the windshield. I was 16, had a decent summer job and a vehicle already but this beast kept calling to me twice a day on the way to work and back.I stopped after payday with my check for 314.00 cashed for 2 wks labor in my pocket. No phone number on sign, no asking price on sign? Good lights, good glass and clean yet spartan interior as in vinyl bench seat front and back, no radio and vinyl floor. Pretty basic car and it had a security cage separating front and back? Hmmmmmm interesting and yes I didn’t know at the time but it was a 440 Interceptor retired police model. Heavy duty everything and a back seat and trunk large enough to rent out as self storage.Knocked and knocked and stopped 3 days in a row with no answer from the old farmstead finally left a note on door with my name and number. Got a call from Marty a couple of days later asking me to meet him the next day if I wanted to hear it run. Asking price 800.00 ummmmm well let’s hear her run and worry about the trivial stuff later.Show up at 8 am Saturday and no Marty, look at car and keys in ignition. Pop hood check fluids all ok, not real clean but amounts are ok. The battery is toast, try to jump start with my car no go. Won’t fire. Then Marty shows up and says not my car but I have a signed title from my son in law who moved to California 3 yrs ago and asked me to sell his prized Fury?I’m a bit wary as this guy doesn’t act or even look sound like a local and he’s certainly no farmer. I tell him car won’t start I don’t know why as of yet and being as it’s rusty, ugly and not in running condition I’m not sure why the high asking price of 800.00? Response from Marty I don’t know either but I rent out this property and want the car out of here. Make me an offer… ok I’m 16 it’s the early 80’s I’m not very schooled at this type of behavior at the time and also kinda shy and don’t know this guy.I’m going to check with my dad and get back to you. He says yeah good idea but seriously if you make me a stupid offer right now I’d probably take it? Ok gotta be safe at 100.00 right? Pull 5 20’s out of my thin wallet and spread them for his perusal. That is really stupid he says and no way, ok then I’ll talk to my dad and get back to you. He looks up, down and at the rusty red behemoth sinking in the tall grass and says “Fuck it, here’s the title get it off the property by 6 pm or I’ll start charging you 20 bucks a day”And that sports fans is how I came into possession of my second car a 1973 Plymouth Fury III Police Interceptor with a 440 V8 a non working gas gauge and 82546 miles on it! I got a buddy to drive me back with various implements of car type repairs along with us, including but not limited to a 5 gal can of fuel as the vehicle had not only not been run since 1979 or 80 it hadn’t been moved and wasn’t on blocks….. and this was June of 1982Tried to air up tires whoops! 1st of many issues and as we know issues are never good! 2 out 4 tires are rotten and not capable of holding air. Ok put 2 good tires aired up on rear, take bad ones to Co-Op in Chisago city get some cheap take offs installed for 60.00 now it’s 2:30. Ok rubber addressed all wheels on car. Won’t start….check spark, no spark shit shit shit should have checked before tire adventure. Head to Napa in Lindstrom they close at 4pm on Saturday’s it’s now 345. Get coil, plugs, wires, cap and a battery. 119.00 later head back and install…. got spark no start….Check fuel, gauge says 1/4 tank and later find out it always says 1/4 tank… put in 5 gals and now it’s 530. It almost starts 4–5 times and then does start and promptly back fires so loudly and forcefully that 2 cows 60 yards away tip themselves over in fright and the dual exhaust separates itself 1/2 way back pealing both Mufflers / mice condos right in half… Fucking fuck fuck fuck!!Now it’s 5:55 and Marty is good as his word is there looking to bump his profit by 20%. The good news is that it’s running, loudly very loudly! Put it in gear and it moves…. hot damn, ask my buddy to follow me home! Marty can suck it!Drive the extremely loud, no license plates, smoke blowing beast on the back roads of Chisago county home. It actually drives pretty nice in fact its pretty freaking powerful and fast!! It also gets really bad mpg and runs out of gas on road down (luckily) to my dads place. Coast in to drive way and the old man comes running out claiming to be having a Vietnam combat relapse based on the backfires and tank sounding lack of exhaust noise my car made before running out of gas.Son of mine he exclaims what have you done? 100.00 dad look at this ride for 100.00 I’m all proud and kinda impressed with myself. He pops the hood whistles loudly, Wow! A 440 with a 4 barrel and new wires, coil, cap and plugs and some new tires… shit that stuff alone would have been 2–3 hundred he says. Nope, I return with it was only 180.00? Ohhhhhhh he exclaims, get used to that kinda spending as this might be an education in modern autos you will come to regret! What? I say….. ohhh nothing he says… Cool ride kid but get the POS off my cement driveway before it’s life’s blood stains my cement….So started my summer of love in 1982…. I had numerous failures and necessity fueled repairs regarding Brakes, exhaust, carb, Fuel pump, radiator, older 2 tires, spare tire, headlights, taillights, brake lights, interior lights, dash lights, gas gauge, other gauges, power steering pump, passenger window, driver side mirror, bondo ing up the Minnesota rust holes, got it painted a blue color on the cheap from a wanna be body guy.Blue baby was reborn in early August of of 1982 and really it was a car you could work on yourself, huge hood and you could get under it at everything, the enhanced suspension allowed for getting underneath without jacking it up and luckily for me parts weren’t all that hard to find. The Blue Baby Beast was fast, very fast and I went thru 4 sets of retreads on the rear from August until October… It would bust loose often in the rear whether I wanted to or not…. it drove straight, it stopped on a dime in a time before ABS and it cornered pretty well in my limited experience.. but holy crap I was filling up the 23 gal tank almost daily and it leaked more bodily fluids that I thought even possible… I couldn’t keep up with them and it was starting to make the sand off my dads driveway flammable he told me?He cornered me one evening with a piece of paper and pen in the garage while I was addressing another necessary repair… Kiddo he says it’s time for your first child to fly on it’s own and find a new home.. cmon Dad I exclaim it was only 100.00? Really? Add up your replacement and repairs and skip the labor as you screwed up more initially than repaired…….Dang Dad but ok I add up the purchase price, lic fees, repairs, parts, 2 tows, 1 locksmith visit, fluids and come up with 1121.00 in 1982 dollars not including adding insurance cost I’m sure my dad bumped on me.How much do you have in the bank today? Ummmm I’m good! Great but I’m asking for a amount? 84.00 as I sigh? Ok lesson learned your 100.00 car cost you thousands with your man hours included , with repairs etc and it’s a 500 to 1000 car only because of the motor value…. cut your losses and sell it!Sharp guy my old man! Way back before the internet and smart phones you would use your home phone and place an ad in a newspaper to sell stuff. I did so in the Forest lake times I believe and tossed a for sale sign in window and sold the Blue bitch within a week for 1225.00 dollars to a wanna be security guard/ cop from Hugo, Mn while greatly impressing the old man and myself for that matter. Learned some pretty valuable lessons mechanically and financially that summer. It all pretty much worked out after I cleaned up the flammable sand in my Dad’s driveway…
