Despite his modern reputation as a "scientist" (which he was not), Leonardo worked within the late medieval tradition of the artisan. He was the kind of person that a magnate could get to do various practical things, from paint a picture to drain a swamp. There had been a long tradition of people who made a living from their ability to do creative, artistic and inventive things. These days we differentiate between an artist, a sculptor, a maker of inventive and entertaining toys, an engineer and an architect. In the later medieval and early modern periods, all these things tended to be done by the same people.Many of these people kept private notebooks where they noted or sketched out ideas - some of them practical and others just fancies. The sketchbook of Villard de Honnecourt, dating to two centuries before Leonardo, shows how far back the tradition of the versatile artist-artisan goes. In it Villard does everything from lay out the design of the spire decoration for Laon Cathedral (which can be seen on the finished Cathedral today) to sketch a design for a highly fanciful perpetual motion machine. Artisans like Villard and, later, Leonardo made their living from finding practical applications for speculative ideas.More recently Leonardo's art came to be highly admired and he became known primarily as an artist. When his notebooks first began to be published in the Nineteenth Century, there was great interest in his speculative designs and drawings. This was in a period in which science and technology were coming together for the first time, and this was when the legend of Leonardo as a "scientist" and "inventor" in the Nineteenth Century mould was born. As a result, the idea arose that he was "a man ahead of his time", who was a remarkable precursor to the Victorian era scientist/engineer rather than a man who was very much of his own period and tradition.But this is imposing modern categories on the past. Leonardo was a Fifteenth Century artisan-artist and worked in that tradition. And in his world there was little interest in how he made his mechanical toys for a Duke's banquet hall or in his speculative doodles about flying machines. As a result, in an age where books were very expensive and the book market was driven strongly by what readers were prepared to buy, there was no interest in publishing an artisan-artist's sketches and doodles. This is why his notebooks remained unpublished until centuries after his death.
