In the US, it depends on whom you ask.Let’s take a deeper look at the demographics.The more you approve of Trump, the more likely you are to think that rap is not music.The older you are, the more likely you are to think that rap is not music.If you don’t have a college degree, you’re more likely to think that rap is not music.The more conservative you are, the more likely you are to think that rap is not music.The less urban your neighborhood, the more likely you are to think that rap is not music.The more you believe that federal welfare spending is too high, the more likely you are to believe that rap is not music.What’s going on here?All these are markers associated with cultural conservatism in the US. And political identity, more often than not, is a reflection of cultural identity.Rap is associated with Blacks. Blacks are a prominent part of the American conservative out-group, to the same extent that rural Whites are a prominent part of the in-group. And people often define themselves in opposition to perceived elements associated with the out-group. For instance, I became an ardent supporter of gay marriage precisely when I started solidifying my view of conservatives as my out-group.It’s not entirely surprising that demographics groups associated with conservatism feel more antagonism to a perceived element of Black culture. You would have had the same reaction if you’d asked people about Jazz as an art form in the 1920s.That being said, although I don’t have any data to support it, I would bet that rap is more accepted as music today than it was 30 years ago. It will diversify your resume a little.Enlist with special interest groups/associations to start building a professional network.Take up a hobby that has tangible outputs. Start developing apps, blogging, photography, start a Youtube channel, build up a strong social media profile, contribute to Github etc.Learn a new language - literary or programming.Actively pursue new and extra responsibilities at work. Prove that you are a dedicated and driven professional.Use impactful words to muscle up your existing profile. Half the art of resume-making is your skills and achievements, and half is the presentation.Be thorough with everything you have put down on paper.
