It is well founded. The chance of being accused may be slight, but once it hits an innocent man, it is his entire life that is ruined.In 1991, a disheveled and tearful woman told police officers in Harlem that she had been kidnapped at knife point and raped by three black men, one of whom she identified as Gregory Count, then a 19-year-old.Gregory was charged with rape, sodomy, kidnapping and illegal possession of a weapon. In the following year, a jury convicted Gregory on all counts except for the weapon charges.Gregory served 11 years of his 26-year-long sentence. In what seemed a he said-she said case, his prospects were dicey.In February 2018, 24-year-old Welsh guy Curtis Gibbins received a call from the police when he was out with his friends. He was told over the phone that someone had said that Curtis raped them.[2]It was a slight relief that the allegation was retracted. Curtis avoided being arrested, charged or faced any court action. But nightmares didn't end here.Many people, including his best friend of 12 years, estranged from him due to this horrific accusation. He also distanced himself from everyone else as he was too scared to go anywhere by himself and too afraid to be alone with a woman.Before the allegation, Curtis was outgoing and sociable. Now, he's anxious, depressed, irritable and suicidal. He feels that the whole incident pushed him over the edge.One of the most tragic one is 17-year-old Jay Cheshire, a “mature and well-liked” student ambassador at his six form school at Southampton.He was found hanging himself in a nearby park after being accused of rape. Although his accuser withdrew the allegation two weeks after, the withdrawal took place only after Jay was confronted by the police and his name forever tarnished with the smear.The police arrived at the scene where he hanged himself, and found his suicide note. It was indicated that he struggled to cope with the false accusations and police investigations.He was rushed to Southampton General Hospital, where his mother Karin Cheshire made the heart-wrenching decision to switch off his life support two days later. His whole family never got over his suicide. Karin described it as the worst decision a mother could ever make.[3]Karin fell into depression after the death of her son. She was kept in a mental facility for six months. However, unable to see a future without her son, she fooled the doctors into discharging her and then hanged herself several days after Jay's death anniversary. She died of asphyxiation — the same way her son died.She left behind a 22-year-old daughter Camellia Cheshire, who has also been driven to the brink of suicide by the death of her mother and brother. She was left alone to organize two funerals.It was said that the accuser met with Jay before his death and admitted that someone had put pressure on her to make the false rape accusation.Every day, Camellia lives with the urge of confronting the accuser, but hasn't yet because she fears the devastating effect it would have on her own mental health.These are only a handful of anecdotes relating to false rape accusation.However, it's not hard to tell from these anecdotes — false rape accusations are lethal. He is not responsible for causing the problem but he has taken responsiblity for solving it and in a very short time he has promoted and seen significant legislation passed and promoted other solutions which are moving through the legislative process.So here is the corrected question: Why is the Governor responsible for solving the homelessness issue? And the answer is because he has taken it on himself both while campaigning and in his short tenure in office, to ACT on this committment.
