PDF Editor FAQ

How would you describe your first or almost-native language to someone who doesn't speak it?

My native language, Vietnamese, is the language of combinatorial configurations. The number of configurations you can make with our system of characters grows in a combinatorial way, creating too many of them and making the language hard to learn. We seem to be proud when we say “Phong ba bão táp không bằng ngữ pháp Việt Nam” (Thunderstorms are still better than the grammars of Vietnamese). Our language used to use the Chinese-similar characters, until the French Jesuit missionary and lexicographer Alexandre de Rhodes introduced us to the latin characters. We eventually adopted the latin alphabets, but we didn’t seem very happy with them so we created a lot of mutations, mostly on the vowels, making many new compound characters. Interestingly, every single one of these configurations is grammatically valid and leads to a unique sound.First, we associate the vowels with weird marks, creating: a, ă, â, e, ê, i, o, ô, ơ, u, ư. Each of these marks alters the pronunciation of the vowel.Next, we give them the accents. Each of the vowels-with-marks above can be accompanied by one of the 6 accents. Some of them were inspired from French, some from Chineseprimitive form, also known as the non-accent: a, ă, â, e, ê, i, o, ô, ơ, u, ưaccent aigu, inspired by French: á, ắ, ấ, é, ế, í, ó, ố, ớ, ứaccent grave, also inspired by French: à, ằ, ầ, è, ề, ì, ò, ồ, ờ, ừaccent question-mark, inspired by the third tone of Chinese: ả, ẳ, ẩ, ẻ, ể, ỉ, ỏ, ổ, ở, ủ, ửaccent tilde, probably taken from Portuguese: ã, ẵ, ẫ, ẽ, ễ, ĩ, õ, ỗ, ỡ, ũ, ữaccent dot, not sure where it comes from: ạ, ặ, ậ, ẹ, ệ, ị, ọ, ộ, ợ, ụ, ựSometimes, the letter y is used as a vowel, in which case it’s read like i. Not satisfied, we even mix them together, creating the compound vowels like: ua, uô, ươ, ưu, au, âu, iê, and many others. Each of these combinations can also take one of the 6 tones above. If you get me, the number of combinatorial configurations simply blows up.We also mix the consonants together, creating ch, ng, th, kh, etc.Ah, for once, we even mix one consonant and one vowel, making a consonantal sound gi. By the way, did I say anything about accents could only be put on vowels and compound vowels? No, this consonant combination can take accents too, but it’s the only exception. Thus, although we start with 26 characters, the mutation laws allow us to get to more than 200. From these compound bricks, we build words in a similar manner to Korean, where each syllable follows the model: [head consonant]-[vowel]-[tail consonant]. However, we eased our lives by letting them follow the linear order, for e.g. Việt Nam (V-iệ-t N-a-m) is how we actually write our country’s name. Similar to French, we silent the tail constants. We have three main dialects, spoken by people from the North, the Middle and the South. Unlike the Chinese, we don’t have too many problems understanding people from other regions. Many of us even enjoy making fun of the dialects of people from Middle Vietnam. It’s not consider offensive in our culture. Our language is rich. It’s sometimes referred to by our linguists as the language of music. Consistently, we do have many beautiful poems and songs.
