PDF Editor FAQ

My 4-year-old child complains that she is afraid of her teacher. Her teacher seems to be nice. What could be the problem?

My son spent his entire first-grade sitting with his desk in a corner because the teacher said he was “too difficult.”The thing is, whenever I came to visit, his desk was in a row with the others. He’d say “Mrs. _____ moved me to the corner today. She said I was disturbing the person across from me,” and things like that. I was (I’m ashamed to admit) dismissive, saying “Then you have to learn to be quiet” or whatever. It was nearly the end of the school year when I dropped in at the school and had to take something to his classroom. There he is, sitting in the corner: “Why is his desk over there?”She was flustered and said something about his refusal to do his work or being distracted or some such. I said “I don’t know how much time he’s spent in the corner today (!) but I imagine the point has been made. Please move his desk back to its regular place.” Which she did, into one of the rows.I then went to the principal and said that I suspected she was keeping my son in the corner most of the time and that I wasn’t sure if other children were similarly disciplined.Long story short, my son was the only one moved to a corner, at the slightest provocation. He had no learning disabilities or behavior issues (not that it would have justified her “discipline”), had had no problems in kindergarten, and as it turned out later, caused no unusual disruptions in future classrooms. The principal tried to excuse the teacher with “Mrs _____ retires at the end of next year and perhaps she felt that she couldn’t deal well with your son; I hope you won’t file a formal complaint as it could affect her pension” and blah blah blah. This was a small public school with only one classroom per grade in the lower grades, so moving him was never an option.I wish now I’d paid more attention, listened more closely to what he said, and had popped into the school early on to get a feel for how things were in general. Well, we live and learn. He’s 37 and seems well-adjusted so I’m guessing there are no residual effects. But I surely advise you to listen to your child and do some thorough checking, including dropping by unexpectedly a few times at random. You might get a much better idea of what’s happening when no parents are around…

What is the most ridiculous thing you’ve seen when picking your child up from daycare?

when my daughter was 4 months old she went to an in home daycare/sitter when I went back to work. When meeting her she said that she had another infant full time, and two toddlers that were part time.During the second week there was an unscheduled early dismissal at the school I worked at, so I decided to pick her up early. I called the sitter, she didn’t answer so I left I message. When I left work I sent her a text that I was on my way also. When I got there, I knocked on the front screen door (inside door was open). After several minutes including another call and another knock just to try to be polite, i went inside as she had always told me when I knocked that I am welcome to come in anytime. I could hear a lot of commotion from the front door but when I got in the living room it was a disaster… and no sitter to be found. My daughter and another infant were on the floor next to a dog food bowl. And my baby was putting the food in her mouth. There were 4 other kids there, different ages, 3 of them I had never seen before. Jumping off the couch, throwing stuff, one was crying.. it was total chaos. It was upsetting but I tried to keep my cool so that I could first help all the other kiddos with their needs and make sure they were all safe and okay. She eventually stumbled out of the back room half asleep.Turns out this was a regular thing for the kids to be unsupervised and she is no longer allowed to care for children.I know there are a lot of wonderful people out there that provide excellent care for kids from in home daycare settings, this lady was not one of them.

Why does the US not change school start times so kids can sleep in to a reasonable hour?

There are many reasons school starts early.Let’s say school started at 10 am and dismissed at 5pm. Football, track, volleyball, swimming etc would start practice after school. It would be getting darker and cooler. In the winter, it is much colder at 7 pm. Sports practice are usually 2 hours. After school games would be in the dark, cross-country would be jogging around town in the dark. Kids would be getting home late. Parents would not like their kids out past dark.Detention would be until 6 pm.Some high school kids go home and provide childcare for younger siblings. If school went to 5 pm, some parents would not be able to afford childcare. There would be more elementary-age kids home alone. Some high school kids have to work and support themselves. If school was to 5 pm, they would not get enough hours. Many of these kids would be forced to drop out.Parents frequently go to work between 7:30–9 am. Who is going drop the high schooler off at school at 10 am? Not all kids drive or own cars. Kids go to school early, so parents can make it to work. Some parents, that work at 8 am, would not be comfortable trusting their kid to get themself to school at 10 am. Lots of kids would be late or miss school. Ditching is a problem in high school. There are more reasons as well.
