The French have allowed the UK border to be placed in France for some years now, and there have been large, unsightly fences built around ports such as Calais and Caen, to ensure that illegal migrants cannot get to the ferry facilities, HGVs etc. By and large, this has been successful, meaning that those migrants who are trying to get to the UK are turning to other, more hazardous methods.Why do they want to come here? The accommodation is typically either a cheap B&B type hotel, a hostel, or secure accommodation in an immigration detention centre. However, once the asylum assessment process is complete, they lose all entitlement to that accommodation and those allowances whether or not the application succeeds. If the application is successful the applicant can seek work, but is not entitled to free housing nor to any benefits for quite a few months of working and paying NI contributions.If the application is unsuccessful, the applicant is left without benefits or accommodation, and is liable to deportation. The problem with that is that deportation isn’t at all straightforward under international law, especially where the potential deportee has no documentation to prove their identity. Like us, they have no right to detain people without trial for long periods simply because they arrived here illegally. The suggestion elsewhere in this thread that they should stop people from leaving France is equally ridiculous - you can’t stop an illegal immigrant from leaving your country, and frankly, why would you want to?If we have a ‘no deal’ exit in the end following the transition period, then it’s very likely the French will stop maintaining our border in France, take down all the fences etc. and put us in the situation where the first we know of any illegal immigrants is when they turn up in Dover or other places. Why wouldn’t the French do that? And why, having voted for that, would we be surprised?

You need to be more specific about what you mean when you say ‘immigrants’. We have a whole slew of criteria for different classes of migrants entering the UK. There are EU migrant workers, Commonwealth migrant workers, and migrant workers from other parts of the world not included in those categories. We also have asylum seekers, who receive minimum assistance, including housing, which can be anything from hostels to hotels, but is rarely anything other than awful, & an allowance of £36.95 per week, on a payment card. Asylum seekers are not allowed to work. {Asylum support: What you'll get}. If an application for asylum is accepted, the status of the applicant changes to that of refugee. Refugees are fully entitled to benefits that UK citizens enjoy. Additionally, note that refugee status isn’t open-ended. Should the Home Office decide that it is safe for the refugee to be returned to their country of origin, they can & do repatriate. But be clear, no UK monetary benefits are generous.

I recommend you to walk a little bit from the city center you will find better rates for currency exchange.3) Accommodation: Check out AirBnb for great deals! It is both budget friendly and gives you an opportunity to meet local people at their houses! As another option, you can always find a safe and inexpensive hostel but do not forget to read the comments before you book a place! Sometimes photos that are uploaded by the hostel itself might be misleading.4) Food: You do not have to choose fast food restaurants to fill your stomach! You can always find a supermarket where you can buy some filling and some rolls! It both saves you some money and lets you explore the city!5) Flights: While purchasing your tickets, especially for flights, do not forget to cross check the prices on different websites. You can use Google Flights, Skyscanner and airline’s website itself. You can see the best restaurants and cafes in that certain city and the same goes with CityMaps2Go Travel Guide application.
