Delhi Metro is only moderately successful rapid transit system. Delhi Metro is not the most successful metro among all metro systems in the world.Within the domestic scenario, there aren’t very efficient public transit systems in India. Before Delhi Metro came into existence, there was only one city which had a metro system; Kolkata, which has been in operation since 1984. There have been talks for a mass rapid transit system around then but it only materialised in 2002. So we are a little too late. Another system that comes close is Mumbai Suburban Railway, popularly known as Mumbai local, which is highly successful but is not as sophisticated as Delhi Metro. It is important to note that Delhi too has a suburban railway which is not popular among commuters and hence is a total failure for a public transport system.Other cities with Metro rapid transit system in India are Bangalore, Mumbai, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Chennai, Kochi and Lucknow. Metros in these cities are only recent developments and do not service a large area and hence have low ridership. It is very early to judge the success of these metro systems.Now let’s compare Delhi Metro’s success with other mass rapid transit systems in and outside the country on the following terms:Ridership: Delhi metro ridership in the financial year 2016–17 was 1001.65 million. Thus the average daily ridership is 2.76 million. This is quite a high figure. The Delhi Metro today ranks 10th in terms of ridership among the top metro systems in the world. But the Mumbai local had annual ridership of 2.64 billion with daily ridership of 7.59 million in 2016–17 (high success of Mumbai local can be blamed for poor success of other mass rapid transit systems in Mumbai, i.e. metro and monorail). Comparatively, Kolkata Metro has very low ridership of around 650, 000. The figures for others metros are way higher, Beijing (3.6 bn), Shanghai (3.4 bn), Tokyo (3.2 bn).Service area: The total network length of Delhi Metro is 213 km. Kolkata Metro is only 27 km. Namma Metro of Bangalore is 42 km. Other are: Mumbai- 11 km, Chennai - 28 km, Chennai MRTS - 19 km, Mumbai Monorail- 8 km. You see, all other metro systems don’t even come close to Delhi Metro. So, it is difficult to judge their success when they don’t even serve area enough population. This means their accessibility is very low. However the suburban rail systems have greater accessibility in most cities. For example- Chennai Suburban Railway is 1182 km long. That’s five times as Delhi Metro. Kolkata has 896 km long suburban railway line and Mumbai has 427 km. Now when you have this high accessibility of service, who wants a metro? Delhi Metro’s network length is comparable to that of Hong Kong (another developing world city) but Delhi is way behind in ridership and revenue. The fact reflects the system’s failure to utilize innovative financing through landuse and transit integration.Affordability- After the last hike, the fares for Delhi Metro are high compared to other means of mass transport but comparable to other metros. Fares of suburban railway and Bus Rapid Transit are much cheaper than metro. However, in comparison to metro systems around the world, it is still cheap given that we are rendered same class of service. But the cost of living is much higher in these cities. So, I don’t know if the fares are on par with CLI in other countries. God bless London Tube where minimum ticket price is 6.60 GBP (Rs 560) and maximum is 28.60 GBP (Rs 2470).Revenue: Delhi Metro incurred net loss of USD 70 million in 2015-16 and has been operating in net loss since commencement. Revenue from fare-box contributed 79% and 3% was earned through leasing of real estate and 18% from rental income (advertisement and station space rental) in financial years 2015-16. The share of fare-box revenue was significantly lower in 2006-07 (41%) and 2007-08 (63%) due to higher share of revenue generated from one-time leasing of DMRC land to a private developer in order to reduce capital debt during the initial years’ operations.Last-mile connectivity: Reiterating the fact from point #2, all of the metro systems don’t even go beyond the city cores, let alone the peripheral areas. Delhi Metro goes beyond Delhi border to neighbouring cities of Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Noida and Faridabad.Sustainability: This is something to be proud of. Delhi Metro has provided significant environmental benefits. With a focus on using renewable energy, DMRC plans to achieve carbon neutrality by purchasing power from solar energy providers. Although we have failed to integrate better land use with transit system.Delhi metro scores points on cleanliness too, comparable to the world. Interestingly, we only recently added dustbins towards the exits of the metro stations. Earlier there were no dustbins, also no signs of garbage within the premises.As there are a number of Urban Rapid Transit (metro, monorail, lightrail) coming up in smaller cities. Please note that Mass Rapid transit is likely to not be successful in smaller cities because of the limited usability. And having a better alternative in metro cities can also result in failure of Metro Rapid Transit system.If people switch from private vehicles to mass transport, it is considered a huge success for public authorities as well as environmental conservationists. Delhi, for some reason, has high automobile dependency. Delhi Metro and DTC public transport might have been considerably successful but we have a failed suburban railway, failed BRTS, scrapped monorail, and tram system lost in history. Come on guys!
