At what stage in your life did you realize, "No, I can't do this any more" and walk out? Why?

I have never talked about this. Nobody knows this part of my life. Not even a husband, best friends or relatives. When I was 18 years old, I was in my senior year of high school. I have been playing tennis every single day for 3 hours in the afternoon, and 2 hours conditioning every single morning. I was competing for some European leagues, playing for some clubs and my high school team.I never planned to go pro in tennis. I didn’t even start playing until I was 12 years old. I played ice hockey for 6 years before that. But that was my exit ticket to walk out.My dad was involved in an accident where he lost his eye completely a few months before that. He changed. My mom stayed, took care of him, we all tried to help him. But he just couldn’t accept that he was disabled. That he’ll never be able to drive again, go fishing, etc.It seemed like a end of the World for him, as much as we tried to cheer him up, to help him, etc., he was turning away from his family & into alcohol and painkillers. What once was a idyllic family, turned out in every day tensions, arguments between him me my mom & me, broken stuff in the house, him blaming everyone for his accident, etc. Before that, he was in the military, sharp looking guy in his 40s, etc.I couldn’t take it anymore. One night after horrible fights and arguments with my mom, and my intervention resulting in shattered glass and stuff everywhere, I realized I’m done.I called my tennis manager and asked him if I could get the hell out of my country, to play for any club anywhere else, just far away.He asked me “ How does United States of America sounds “It was on another continent. I said “Let’s do it”.I knew I was leaving my mom & younger sister to deal with all the crazy shit that my dad turned our lives in, but I couldn’t take it anymore.I wasn’t even thinking about them, I just wanted to escape that nightmare. Now, six years later, I still feel guilty about myself walking out on them when they probably needed me.My mom left one year after I came to the US, when emotional abuse turned into physical, and now lives happily divorced. My dad ended in a mental hospital for long time, he was diagnosed with PTSD, but for the past two years he’s been doing a little bit better.I didn’t talk to him for years, he was not invited to my graduation from college, my wedding, none of the important events. After my son was born, we reconnected little bit, but never became close again.I’m so happy for my mom & sister, they’re both doing so well in the past few years, but I still think sometimes how things would have turned out if I stayed. But I couldn’t take it anymore, so I walked out when I was barely 18.

Are exit ticket barriers on UK trains legal? Entry barriers and checks on the train make sense (you only travel if you pay), but by putting in an exit ticket barrier, it is like detaining me until I prove I have paid.

On what principle would this be illegal? The trains are run by the government. Their policies shape what is legal or not legal. If you cannot prove that you have paid, you have to pay again. (Assuming you are not caught by a human, but rather you are dealing with the automated systems.) That is your “remedy” to being detained.
