PDF Editor FAQ
Do all countries put their hand over their heart when pledging allegiance to their country like here in the states?
This pledge of which you speak does not feature in most places in the world. In the early part of the 20th century, the golden years of nationalism if you will, flag ceremonies were more common in the world. Boy scouts still do it, I believe, and YMCA members. But in general these things have fallen out of favour. These salutations used to have an outstretched arm but some have changed the gesture to try to hide the obvious association with a rather unpopular movement in Europe. When Americans fall into their nationalistic mode with pledges in classrooms and military pomp and mass hysteria at sporting events, well, its genuinely weird if not outright creepy.
What is something I can do every day to challenge myself or push myself out of my comfort zone?
I think you can start by thinking of who you’d like to be. Then, make a list of the traits that you need to work on or develop. After that, you can come up with a reasonable plan to begin stretching yourself. For instance, if you’d like to be more fit. Your first step might be joining a local YMCA. Your next step might be planning how many times to go a week. The important step is to figure out how you want to grow and then what you need to do to achieve that growth. As you’re starting out, your only conviction should be that you persevere. Don’t think about how well you’re doing or if you’re making mistakes. Simply pledge and commit to changing some aspect of your life and stick with it.Hope this helps!
How have you personally experienced religious discrimination?
I have experienced religious discrimination, many times.During small claims court, once, a landlord, who made my life absolute hell, tried to convince the judge that he should be allowed to evict me, based solely on the fallacy that I, as a Pagan, was practicing devil worship, and endangering children. The judge fined him $100 and made him refund three month’s rent, so I could move.My son’s elementary school threatened to call Child Protective Services, because my son (then, 8 years old) refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance, even though he stood quietly, as it was recited. My son informed them, that because we are Avalonian, he had already pledged his allegiance to the Mother Goddess, and couldn’t go back on his word. In the parent/teacher/school board meeting, I mentioned ‘lawyer’ and ‘first amendment’ and the matter was dropped. My son and I were disinvited to the local YMCA, after another parent told an employee that I’m a Witch, and “…probably sacrificed small animals in my pursuit of dark power.” (actual quote) My $150 registration fee was not refunded. While at a bookstore, I asked an employee where I could find a copy of Power Of the Witch, by Laurie Cabot. She yelled, “I refuse to sell that Satanic shit!” She, then, crossed herself, and yelled the Lord’s Prayer. I left.My mother showed up, unannounced, to my home, and saw me giving a reading to a client. She called me a wicked, evil creation who God would smite, when I used a Spirit Board, during the reading. At that time, I’d been a practicing Witch for 23 years, and she’d always known. When I talked to her about it, later, she told me she didn’t want anyone to think she agreed with my beliefs.I was asked to leave a lingerie store, when an employee saw my Goddess necklace. She said I was making other patrons nervous. Nobody else saw my necklace. This happened about two months ago.Pagans, worldwide, have lost custody of their children. Suspected Witches have been burned, alive, as recently as this year, in Kenya, Peru, Tanzania, and other parts of the world. Paganism is, still, outlawed in some Western societies. In North Carolina, where I live, there was an active Anti-Divination law, for 66 counties, including my own. The law was repealed in 2004, amid severe backlash from several police department officials, business owners, and Christian groups.Whether you are a believer, think it’s all stuff and nonsense, or it terrifies you to your core, Paganism is a valid religion, and should be as respected, and tolerated, as any other belief system. Fighting for religious equality, in 21st Century America, is about as ridiculous as it gets. Yet, here we are.
