That rocket launch does not look “close” to me with my thousands of hours as an airline captain experience. Nor does it look even remotely dangerous. Moreover planes are not allowed to fly too close to rocket launches. Original Question: When the President flies on Air Force One, is there a squadron that flies alongside? What protections are taken?Rarely will there be fighter aircraft on the wings of Air Force One. The pilot asked for and received fighters on his wings on 9/11.On stateside trips there are fighters staged along the flight path that can launch in minutes if a possibly aggressive aircraft is threatening Air Force One or has strayed to close to the bird. A TFR is issued for the entire flight path. A TFR is a geographically-limited, short-term, airspace restriction, typically in the United States. Temporary flight restrictions often encompass major sporting events, natural disaster areas, air shows, space launches, and Presidential movements. Before the September 11, 2001 attacks, most TFRs were in the interest of safety to flying aircraft with occasional small restrictions for Presidential movements. Since 9/11, TFRs have been routinely used to restrict airspace for 30 nautical miles around the PresidentAir Force One is one of the fastest aircraft in the sky. It can not out run military fighters, but anything civilian it can outrun with few exceptions. But if the TFR is broken Air Force One is going to turn away from the bogey and accelerate from cruise (575 mph) to max speed (631+ mph) and extend.Very quickly there will be fighters between Air Force One and the bogey. The fighters will force the bogey away and down to the nearest airport. Or shoot it down if it continues to close or be otherwise aggressive.Air Force One has defensive countermeasures and two very very good career military pilots onboard, a Colonel and a Lieutenant Colonel usually. It is fantastically maintained and everything is running at 100% of design capability or better. (The 747 has actually run at Mach .98 which is as fast as 751 mph depending on the altitude.)

Always very smooth and almost always reliable right on set clearance (Altitude setting above ground). The plane was definitely in its element down low, and mostly the crew is focused on making sure the flight controls were giving the right inputs based on the TFR and attack radar displays. This was easy to interpret since the TFR would give different aural indications in our headsets based on commanding a climb or decent. So if the radar shadows were diverging then we were listening to make sure the aircraft was commanding a climb and conversely if the shadows were converging indicating we were over the terrain we were ok.The beam width on the TFR radars was very narrow meaning flying down a canyon the wingtip clearance could be as small as 50 feet, which definitely made for some real excitement while the airplane is flying hands off.But things really got exciting when we flew in clouds or at night over the terrain with TFR. Frequently, we were flying so close to the mountains that you could suddenly see flashes of our lights off the mountains as we flew in and out of clouds at night.Image this out the side of the aircraft suddenly in view as you flying in and out of clouds.To say we were concentrating 100% on making sure the system wasn’t going to kill us, is certainly not an exaggeration.As you can see flying this low is not for the faint of heart, but we did it day in and day out practicing to make sure we could fly under the enemy’s radar view.It is no wonder that our potential adversaries were very worried about our capabilities.
